Two Ships
Sometimes you’re so busy living
You feel like a ship out at sea
Forever chasing the North Star
You just know it’s your destiny
But what do you do when another
Ship comes along in the night
Then pulls in close for a moment
And the stars fade away from your sight
You share the same course oh so briefly
Enjoying the close company
You question your reasons for being
So far, all alone, out at sea
Your thoughts all come in a jumble
The compass spins, nothing is clear
You think that perhaps you should veer off
You let the ship come in too near
You don’t want to break the
connection
It
feels so simple
and
right
You curse the
stars up above you
As they pull you back into the night
As the darkness begins to surround you
And the North Star comes into sight
The ship will not fade from your memory
No matter how hard you may fight
You wish your courses were different
Cruising along the same line
Perhaps the trip would be brighter
with one course: yours and mine
I hope that we don’t lose contact
The night now seems bitterly cold
Plowing my course through the darkness
I don’t feel so fierce or so bold
My thoughts stray to sunshine at midnight
And the joy of a similar soul
The ocean is dark and it’s empty
So far from impossible goals
I hope that if ever you miss me
And the ocean seems lonely and cold
You’ll whisper my name in the darkness
And give me some time to be
told
The breeze will
carry your
message
Over the distance as
far as need be
To my ship, my ears and attention
As I gaze out over the sea
I’ll plot a new course on the ocean
A new star will be there for me
As I move to maneuver my vessel
through a dark and tempest tossed sea
Somehow, some way I will find you
Though long the distance may be
And my friend I’ll rejoice to be with you
together, at noon, out at sea
