Dark Tide
* Captain Joseph D'arz fingered the new pip on his collar, as he waited in the Independence's briefing room for the Senior Staff to arrive. Jake Smith, also newly promoted to Lieutenant Commander, smiled at his half-andorian friend and mentor. *
"Still kind of hard to believe, isn't it?"
* The Captain nodded, a solemn look on his cerulian features. *
"I keep waiting for Captain Hood to walk in the door. However, it was his decision to retire, Jake. Now it is our job to uphold the high standards he has set for this ship and crew."
* The young human nods. They have had this conversation several times over the past few days. *
"It's not going to be easy, sir."
* D'arz smiles at his First Officer. *
"Things never seem to be easy aboard the Independence lately."
* Both men looked up as the doors to the Briefing room parted to admit the CMO, Kate Davenport and Engineer Logan Byrne, followed by the rest of the Senior Staff. As they settle into their seats, Captain D'arz begins the briefing. *
"Alright everyone. First I would like to introduce our newest crewmember, Ensign John Rasczak, who will be heading up the Security and Tactical divisions. "
* Heads nod up and down the table, as the Captain continues. *
"The Independence is to proceed to the planet Daros. Daros is a non-aligned world that is currently seeking Federation membership. There has been an outbreak of disease of an unknown nature, and Darosian medical officials are unable to stop either the spread of the disease, or to discover its source. They have asked for help from the Federation."
* Davenport speaks up. *
"Sir, wouldn't this mission be better served by a Starfleet Medical vessel?"
* D'arz shakes his head, the light glinting off his platinum hair. *
"The USS Pasteur is also en route to Daros, but she is on the outer fringes of the sector, and may not arrive in time to assist us. As the closest vessel, we are to assist the Darosian authorities. As always, the Prime Directive is in effect."
* CMO Davenport leans forward, concern etched on her face. *
"How widespread is the disease?"
* D'arz taps a control, bringing up a holographic display in the center of the table. *
"So far, the disease, which the Darosians are calling 'Tal Diar' or 'Dark Tide', is confined to one mining city, Bashar."
* Lt. Tejan, the new Science Officer, looks up from his notes. *
"Mining city?"
* Dr. Davenport looks across the table at the young Kalandan. *
"Daros is a primary source of vellius crystals, which are refined and used in the treament of certain nerve and brain disorders. It's mined underwater at fantastic depths and transported to the surface in remote vehicles."
* Captain D'arz nods at Davenport, who never ceases to impress him. They were going to need her expertise on this mission. *
"Thank you, Doctor. Everyone please review the files set up by Lt. Commander Smith: they have been routed to your terminals. That concludes the briefing, we will know more once we arrive at the scene. Ensign Jen, best speed to Daros, please."
* The Bajoran woman smiles, already working out the course on her PADD, as the officers rise from the table. Smith watches them file out, shutting down the projection still hovering over the conference table. He turns to the Captain, who is sitting in his seat. stroking his platinum goatee. *
"Oh, oh. When you do that it means you're worried."
* D'arz stops, glancing icily at the young human. *
"Not worried Jake; concerned. There are too many variables here, too many unknowns."
* Jake rolls his eyes. *
"Aren't there always?"
* D'arz chuckles, standing up. He places a hand on Jake's shoulder. *
"Unfortunately my friend, the answer to that is 'yes'."
* Smiling, the two officers head for the Bridge. *
***********
* Captain D'arz stares at the planet on the viewscreen, a swirling orb of grey and black. 'Not very hospitable looking', he thinks. Lt.Commander Smith leans over in his seat, speaking quietly. *
"Probably going to get a few cancellations on those requests for shore leave."
* D'arz grins slightly, turning towards Lieutenant Tejan, at the Science console. *
"Mister Tejan? Report please."
* The young Lieutenant clears his throat, tapping the controls on his console. *
"Umm...Class 'M' planet sir, despite appearences. Oxygen/Nitrogen atmosphere, with a trace of Argon. Three large land masses, fairly temperate climate. Larger cities located near the coastlines."
* He taps several controls, and a map of the Darosian surface appears on the forward viewscreen. The Kalandan continues. *
"There are several large city-sized structures beneath the surface, most near the coastal cities, but there are several out in the deeper waters as well."
* Jake turns to the captain. *
"Those would be the mining facilities."
* D'arz nods, all business now. He points to the screen. *
"Tejan, highlight the capitol city of Karan please, and the afflicted mining city of Bashar as well."
"Aye, sir"
* Up on the screen, a large red spot appears on the coast of the largest continent, and a smaller green one pulses several hundred kilometers away, in the open ocean. Lt. Commander Smith looks back at Tejan. *
"Not exactly neighbors."
* Ensign Reed, at Ops, interrupts Jake. *
"Sir, I'm receiving a hail from the planet's surface."
* The Captain looks over at her. *
"From the planetary council?"
* The Ensign shakes her head. *
"No sir. It's coming from the mining city. A young woman demanding to speak to you. She claims to represent the miners."
* D'arz looks over at Smith, who shrugs. Ensign Reed speaks up again. *
"Another hail, Captain. This one from the Council Chambers in Karan, forbidding us to answer the previous hail."
* Jake mumbles under his breath. *
"Not exactly friendly neighbors, at that."
* D'arz ingores him, standing up. *
"Pipe them both into my Ready Room, Mister Reed."
* He gestures to the First Officer, and together they head into the Captain's Office. *
* The Captain crosses to his desk and turns the terminal towards him as Lt. Commander Smith takes a seat on his right. D'arz activates the comm and the face of the Darosian First Minister, Jared Sunin appeared. The Darosian First Minister was humanoid, with greyish, skin and ovoid eyes that were so black, that at first D'arz had thought them empty sockets. Other than that, he appeared quite human, a middle-aged bureaucrat. *
"You are the Federation Captain?"
* D'arz nodded at the screen. *
"Captain Joseph D'arz of the USS Independence."
* The Darosian replied. *
"I am First Minister Jared Sunin, of the First City, Karan. On behalf of all of Daros, let me thank you for your swift reply to our call for assistance!"
* The Captain leans back in his chair. *
"No need to thank us, First Minister. We would like to get to work. My Chief Medical Officer is standing by to beam down to Bashar with a fully equipped medical team, and-"
"I'm afraid that won't be possible, Captain."
* D'arz blinks once, caught off guard by the interruption. *
"Excuse me, sir? Why will that not be possible?"
* The Darosian rubbed it's hands together, an nervous habit, no doubt. The image of a terran housefly came unbidden into the Captain's mind and he forced himself to focus on the First Minister's words. *
"Bashar is under strict quarantine by order of the Planetary Council. None may come or go from our sister city until the plague problem has been resolved."
* D'arz sighed, trying not to show the growing impatience he was beginning to feel. *
"Sir, we have technology that will permit us to protect ourselves and others from whatever agents may be causing this disease. I feel your interests would best be served by having our Doctor beam directly to the heart of the problem."
* The Darosian offical didn't skip a beat. *
"And should these devices fail? Our best hope for a cure would be in the very clutches of the disease we wish to eradicate!"
* He shook his head, sadly it seemed. *
"No, Captain. The Council requests that you beam your staff down here to confer with our Chief Healer, in Karan. Together, we shall seek a cure!"
* D'arz shifts in his seat, leaning torwards the screen. *
"As you wish, sir. Could you enlighten us as to the identity of the young lady who attempted to contact us?"
* Sunin's head gave a little side-to-side waggle, evidently the equivalent of a Darosian shrug. *
"I'm afraid not, Captain D'arz. Perhaps a citizen overcome by the 'Tal Diar', and not quite coherent. Your arrival has caused quite a stir on Daros. We are a quite insular people, somewhat xenophobic. I'm sorry to have to ask you not to contact anyone outside the offical channels of government as we work through this crisis. You understand, of course."
* D'arz nodded to the First Minister. *
"Of course, sir."
* The Darosian looked pleased for the first time during the conversation. *
"Thank you, Captain. I look forward to meeting you in person. We will forward the appropriate coordinates to you. Sunin out."
* The screen blanked out, to be replaced by the FDTF logo as the connection was cut. *
**************
* Rasczak didn't like what he had heard on the last communication from the planet. *
(There must be something going on down there, something very strange. Why else would the Darosians Council Chambers forbid us to answer the hail original hail?)
* Rasczak began scans of the planet. So as not to alarm the Darosians, the scan remained passive. Some very interesting points came to light, but he decided to remain quiet until he had more evidence. *
(i don't like this at all)
**************
* Captain D'arz sighed and sat back in his chair, the Ready Room lights throwing dark shadows on his cerulian features.*
"What do you think, Jake?"
* The First Officer shifts in his chair. *
"I don't think our friend the First Minister is telling us everything, that's for sure, sir. And that whole story about the first hail was a lot of nonsense."
* The Captain nods, gets up and crosses to the replicator. *
"Coffee-black, Raktajino-hot."
* The air shimmers and two steaming mugs appear, which D'arz picks up and brings back to the desk. Handing the coffee to Smith, who nods appreciatively, the Captain sits down and sips at the strong Klingon beverage. *
"I am sure the First Minister is quite aware of the restrictions of the Prime Directive, Mr. Smith. As are we both. I do not trust his motives."
* He blows on the steaming surface of the mug. *
"There is an old Andorian saying that translates to, "The hunter remains upwind or becomes the s'krill's next meal". We will remain 'upwind' of the Council, so to speak. However, this is first and foremost a mission of mercy, and we will do our best to assist the Darosians within the confines of General Order One."
* Smith takes a sip of his coffee, picking up the PADD on the Captain's desk. *
"Acknowledged, sir. I'll have Rasczak pick a detail and meet me in the transporter room. On the way, I'll swing by Sickbay and let the good doctor know what the game plan is. She's not gonna be happy about the Darosian restrictions, sir."
* The Captain takes the PADD out of Jake's hand as he rises from the seat, placing the mug down on the desk. *
"I will notify Doctor Davenport as to the restrictions, as I will be the one to transport to the planet's surface."
* The younger man places his mug down hard on the shiny surface of the desk, spilling some of the coffee in the process. *
"Sir, I must protest! There is no reason for you to expose yourself to whatever might be down there. The Doctor, Rasczak and I can handle whatever is going on."
* The half-Andorian shakes his head, the lights glinting off his neatly trimmed platinum hair. *
"I am sorry, Jake. But my decision stands. This is going to be about dealing with bureaucrats, and I regret to inform you that I am the one better equipped to deal with this situation. And I would rather that you were here on the ship, keeping an eye on things."
* Mr. Smith shakes his head. *
"I don't like it, sir. But you are the captain."
* D'arz smiles at the younger man. *
"Yes, Mr Smith. I am."
* He switches off the console, and gestures at the door. *
"You have the conn. Talk to Mister Rasczak, and have him and his detail meet me in transporter room three in twenty minutes. Tell him no more than him and two crewmen, small arms only. I do not wish to alarm the Darosians with a show of force. I will stop by Sickbay and brief the Doctor."
* Jake smiles as the doors part, and the two officers emerge onto the Bridge. *
"Well, let's hope that's the most dangerous part of the mission, sir."
* D'arz grins as he heads for the turbolift. *
"Unfortunately, I must agree."
* The lift doors whoosh shut as Lt. Commander Smith eases into the Command Chair. *
"Let me know when we achieve orbit, Mr. Resker."
* The young woman the the helm nods in affirmation. *
"Aye, sir."
* Jake mumbles to himself. *
"What the hell is a s'krill?"
"Sir?"
"Nothing, Lieutenant. Carry on."
************
* Commander Smith turned in his chair to face the tactical station. *
"Mister Rasczak, prepare a security detail. Three people including yourself - report to the captain in transporter room three in 15 minutes."
Rasczak: "Aye sir!"
* Rasczak turned and headed towards the turbolift (he was nervous: there must be something serious going on. Otherwise why would the captain be leading the away team??) He stepped on to the turbolift. *
Rasczak: "Armoury."
Rasczak: =/\= "Rasczak to Crewman Flores and Petty Officer Xellos. Report to the armoury." =/\=
* Flores was the best phaser shot on the ship. She completed her basic training top of her class and always excelled at her duties. Xellos was quite adept at hand to hand combat. As the crewmen entered the room, Rasczak had already strapped on his phaser and was just strapping a spare to his ankle, he turned to face the two. *
Rasczak: "This is primarily a diplomatic mission, however the Captain has chosen to lead the mission. Just a type II phaser each, and I suggest a type I as a backup just in case."
* Flores was getting a little nervous, it seemed like they were preparing for a fight. *
Flores: "Sir, are you expecting trouble?"
Rasczak: "No, I'm not. But experience unfortunately has taught me to expect the worst, so it's better to be prepared than to be caught off guard."
Flores: "Yes sir, I suppose you are right!!"
* They all headed to the transporter room to rendezvous with the captain. As the doors parted, the captain was waiting. *
Rasczak: "Well sir, lets hope it's all good."
D'arz: "I know what you mean ensign. I am sure the situation can be resolved and our mission can be completed. I have never backed down from a challenge yet."
Rasczak: "Aye sir!!!"
**************
"Nothing, Lieutenant." The XO told her.*
* Lt. Delany Resker nodded in reply. *
"Aye sir", she said and swiveled back to face the viewscreen. Biting the side of her lip, Del frowned. Obviously the XO was worried about something. But what? *
* Sighing, she sat up straighter in her chair. *
"Sorry I'm late, Lieutenant!"
* Del turned to face the ensign who stood beside her with a sheepish look on his face. Del smiled. *
"That's alright Ensign. It was only ten minutes: I am sure you can make it up at the end of your shift."
* Del saw him relax a little as she swapped positions with him. She took one more look at the XO before moving towards the turbo lift, with the intention of going to Sickbay. She had become good friends with Kate Davenport, the CMO, and knew she was soon to be released from her post as well. *
*************
* Capt. D'arz and the security detail stepped onto the transporter platform. The familar whine and blue haze surrounded them and just as quckly disappeared: they had materialized in the corridor to the council chambers. *
Rasczak: "Flores and Xellos: both of you have a look around and see what you can find out. If there is any trouble contact me immediately. I am staying with the captain."
D'arz: "Lieutenant, I think it would be better if I went in alone. It would create a better sense of trust."
* Rasczak was bothered by the captain's decision, but he was the captain after all. *
Rasczak: "Very well sir. I will be nearby monitoring the situation, if you require assistance."
* Rasczak set his tricorder to monitor the captain's life signs, in case of trouble. D'arz turned and walked towards the council chambers, while Rasczak and his team began to 'look' around and maybe find some clue as to what exactly is going on down here. *
**************
* Captain D'arz turned and strode towards the Council chambers, recalling the argument with the Doctor, who was furious about the restrictions placed upon them by the Darosian Council. He tapped his combadge. *
"D'arz to Davenport. What is the delay, Doctor?"
* She responded immediately. *
=^= "On my way to the transporter room now, Captain." =^=
* He looked up as the giant doors at the end of the hall swung open. Two wizened Darosian Ministers began to approach him, followed by two large guards, who appeared to be mostly ceremonial. He addressed the Doctor again. *
"Have them beam you directly to these coordinates."
=^= "Yes, sir." =^=
* Tapping off his combadge, he turned to meet the Darosians. Once again he was struck by the blackness of their eyes; eyes showing no emotion whatsoever. What went on behind those blank obsidian orbs? *
"Greetings Honored Captain! I am Minister Jared Sunin, of course. My companion is Healer Falin Baash."
* The ancient Darosian nodded in greeting as Sunin continued, looking slightly distressed. *
"You are alone? But where is your Healer?"
* The Captain's answer is interrupted by the appearence of a swirling pillar of light, which coalesces into the form of Doctor Davenport. D'arz nods to her as she looks around, getting her bearings, and then the Captain turns back to the waiting Ministers. *
"Minister, this is my Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Kate Davenport."
* Healer Baash smiles at the Doctor. *
"Always wonderful to meet another member of the Healing caste. And such a beautiful one at that!"
* Baash takes the Doctor's arm and leads her towards the Council Chamber. *
"Come! Come, my dear. We have much to discuss, and I have so many questions to ask you!"
* D'arz supresses a grin as the Doctor exchanges a helpless glance with him. Baash continues to talk animatedly to Davenport as they head towards the chamber. The First Minister turns to Captain D'arz. *
"My old friend is right Captain. The Council awaits us, and I too have questions to pose as well. Shall we?"
* Smiling, the old Darosian gestures towards the chamber. D'arz thinks back to an ancient Terran saying about the spider and the fly, and represses a shudder. So far, there was no reason to suspect anything was wrong here, other than the plague. But there was a feeling in the pit of his stomachs that told his Andorian half to keep his guard up. He flashed his best diplomatic smile at the Minister. *
* Of course, sir. Lead the way. *
* As they strode towards the entrance, the two guards falling in behind them, he thought about Rasczak and his team. He hoped they were staying out of trouble. *
**********
* Rasczak and his team strolled through the Council building, Flores and Xellos scanning the area with their tricorders. Rasczak checked his own tricorder from time to time, monitoring the Captain's life-signs. He pauses as his combadge comes to life. *
=^= "Crewman Wesson to Ensign Rasczak." =^=
* He taps his combadge, as the other two crewman continue scanning. *
"Rasczak here. What's up, crewman?"
* The younger man replies quickly. *
=^= "Just a 'heads up'. The Doctor is beaming down to the Captain's position. " =^=
* Rasczak looks down at his tricorder and watches as the Doctor's readings fade in. He locks them down and recalibrates the tricorder to follow both the Doctor's and the Captain's life-signs. *
"Right. Got her. Thank you Wesson."
=^= "No problem, sir. Next check-in is due in...thirteen minutes." =^=
* Rasczak nods. *
"Alright, talk to you then. Rasczak out."
* He taps the badge, severing the connection, and walks over to where the two junior officers are studying a huge ancient mural. Covering the entire wall from floor to vaulted ceiling, it is quite impressive. Flores lets out a whistle. *
"Wow! That's really something, huh?"
* Rasczak nods, somewhat reluctantly. The black eyes of the Darosians in the frieze seem to stare down at the trio. *
"Yeah, it's something all right. Something creepy. Let's keep moving."
* Xellos smiles and turns to the right. *
"Picking up Darosian life-signs up ahead."
* Suddenly a male voice rings out. *
"Federation!"
* The three officers turn to see four armed Darosian guards striding towards them, bladed weapons drawn. Flores mutters. *
"Oh, this can't be any good...."
* Rasczak places a restraining hand on Xellos arm. *
"No weapons, yet. Let's see what they want."
* The lead Darosian points his blade at Raszcak, the sharp blade hovering centimeters from the Ensign's unprotected chest. *
"You! Federation! You will return to the council chambers, NOW!"
* Raszcak hold up both hands. *
"Easy now, everyone. Let's not get excited. We were just admiring the scenery."
* The large alien advances again. *
"Do it from the Council Chambers! Move!"
"They're not going anywhere, Dolar!"
* The Away Team whirls at the sound of the new voice, to see a small, dark haired woman and several large males, all holding what appear to be energy weapons. The first Darosian, who is apparently the 'Dolar' in question, bellows in rage as he catches sight of her. *
"Traitoress!! You dare invade the sacred halls?!"
* The woman smiles. Rasczak starts as he recognizes her. He leans towards Flores, whispering. *
"That's the woman who tried to contact the Independence!"
* The woman sneers back at Dolar. *
"I dare everything when my peoples lives are at stake!"
* Dolar's answer is a snarl. *
"Take them!!!"
* The Darosian guards charge the newcomers as the Starfleeters attempt to find cover, but in the large hall there is none. The guards are cut down by the energy beams, their ceremonial blades no match for advanced technology. Raszcak turns to find himself staring down the muzzle of one such weapon. *
"Look lady, I don't know what your problem with these gentlemen is, but we would certainly like to be on our way now."
* The dark-haired woman stares at Raszcak, a small smile playing on her features. Her compatriots quickly relieve Rasczak's team of their equipment.*
"I'm sure you would, Federation. But that isn't in the stars right now."
* One of the Darosians approaches. *
"Kala! We must leave quickly! The Sentinels will have reinforcements coming! And they won't have blades! We must go, now!"
* The young woman, Kala, nods assent. She points her weapon at the Away Team. *
"Move. You're coming with us. Attempt to escape and I'll kill you where you stand."
* The officers are pushed roughly ahead of the Darosians, and hustled down a corridor. Kala smiles. *
"Welcome to Daros, gentlemen."
* They disappear quickly into a side corridor and are gone. The only evidence of their passing is the four bodies strewn about the floor of the chamber. *
***********
* Tara Reed's panel starts beeping. *
"Incoming message: its from a shuttle craft."
"On screen."
=^= "This is Commander Lewis. I have been directed to be transfered from the USS Malachi." =^=
"Welcome. We were not expecting anyone for a two weeks. Sorry the Captain is not here to greet you."
"That's okay. They said that there could be some heat over this mission we have at the moment, and all I was doing was ajusting bridge rosters, anyway. I will be arriving within the hour."
"We will send you an update on what we have so far."
=^= 'Thanks, Lieutenant. Lewis out.' =^=
'Ensign, tell the Captain that Commander Lewis is en route and will be here within the hour. I am going to check that the Commander's quarters are ready.'
***********
=/\= Wesson To Rasczak =/\=
* No response *
=/\= Wesson To Rasczak =/\=
* Again no response*
Crewman Wesson: Sir, I believe the security detail is not responding to hails, and are 10 minutes overdue on their last check-in.
Cmdr Smith: Keep trying Mr. Wesson. Open a hail to the captain, set the translator to Andorian.
* He knew only the captain would be able to understand the Andorian language, thereby permitting secure communications. *
=/\= "Independence To Capt. D'arz." =/\=
* D'arz tapped the commbadge on his chest, opening the hail. He recognized the language, but wondered why the ship was communicating to him in Andorian. Nevertheless, he answered in his native tongue.*
D'arz: "Go ahead, Commander."
Smith: =^= "Sir, we believe Rasczak and his team may have been compromised. All communications with his team have been cut-off. I suggest you make it brief and return to the ship ASAP." =^=
D'arz: "I will take it under advisement, D'arz out."
************
* Rasczak spoke up. *
"Who are you people??"
* The leader, Kala, the one referred to as a traitoress and obviously in charge here, responded. *
"Silence! All will be revealed in time, at the moment you are our insurance."
"Insurance?? Insurance for what??", replied Rasczak.
"You are going to insure that my people receive the medical care they require before this unnatural disease wipes us all out."
* (An unnatural disease, mmmm this is getting very suspicious...) *
* Rasczak leans forward towards his teammates. *
"We are just going to follow these people to wherever they are taking us and try to find out as much as possible. Nobody tries anything without my say so, understood?"
* Both of them nodded, and the trio marched on under armed guard. *
************
* D'arz quickly tapped his combadge. *
"Doctor Davenport, report please."
* The Doctor's reply sounded slightly puzzled. The check-in wasn't due for a few minutes. *
=^= "Davenport here. Everything alright?" =^=
* D'arz shook his head, the chamber's lights reflecting off his platinum hair. *
"I am not sure Doctor. The Independence has lost contact with the Security detail. Keep your eyes open."
=^= "Affirmative, sir. When you have a moment, I need to report our progress on the disease." =^=
* Now the half-Andorian frowned. Obviously Davenport didn't want anyone else overhearing what she had to say. Too bad she didn't speak Andorian. *
"Understood, Doctor. I will contact you as soon as I am able. D'arz out."
* The First Minister, Sunin, looked alarmed. *
"I am sorry, Captain. I did not mean to overhear. You have lost contact with your men?"
* The Captain nodded, putting on his best poker face. *
"A miscommunication, I am sure. The Council Chamber has some elements in it that make it difficult to penetrate with our scanners. I am sure that is all it is."
* Suddenly, the Chamber doors burst open, and a young Sentinel rushes across the room to the dais. He leans down and whispers in Sunin's ear. D'arz watches as the Darosian's ebony eyes widen with suprise, and then become unreadable once again. The Captain wishes he had antennae, like his Father, so that he could discern what went on behind those dark orbs. Sunin was a mystery, and he hated mysteries. The old Darosian spoke up. *
"Captain, I am afraid there is a problem. It appears that the reason you cannot contact your men is that they have been kidnapped."
* D'arz throws an intimidating glare in the direction of the dais. *
"Kidnapped! By whom, Minister?"
"The 'KaVara'!" * blurts the young Sentinel who delivered the news, and he receives a deadly glare from Sunin and several other members of the council. He withers under their glare and seems relieved when Sunin dimisses him with a wave. D'arz crosses his arms across his chest.*
"Who are these 'KaVara', and what would they want with my men?"
* Sunin waves a greyish hand dismissively. *
"They are of no consequence, Captain. A small band of troublemakers and rogues. They constantly question the motives of the government, seeking power for their own causes. Do not worry, we will have you men back within the hour. Once our First Sentinel, Dolar, is informed he will swiftly retur-"
* Again, the portal to the huge chamber slams open, and a huge Darosian shambles into the chambers, his head bleeding. *
"She was here! That wench came HERE Sunin! The gall!"
* Sunin attempts to calm the First Sentinel. *
"Yes, Dolar. So we have been informed."
* The Darosian officer is in a fit of rage, his face darkening, bellowing at the top of his lung. *
"I will hunt her and the rest of the 'KaVara' down like slaar, Sunin! Do you hear me? We'll mine the vellius ourselves if need be -"
"DOLAR!"
* The First Minister's voice cuts through anything else the Officer might have said, bringing the chamber to silence. Dolar, for his part, looks properly chastened, his dark eyes cast downward. He murmured an apology. Sunin shoots him a look, then gestures at the door. *
"Report to the Healers, and tend to your wounds. Then assemble the Sentinels to search for the missing Federationers."
* Dolar opens his mouth as if to speak in protest, and then evidently thinks better of it. He leaves quickly, closing the chamber doors behind himself. D'arz quietly takes in the entire scene as Sunin attempts to restore some sense of decorum. *
"Well now Captain, everything possible is being done to find your men. Now if you will excuse us, the Council needs to discuss this matter privately."
* The Captain nods warily. *
"Of course, Minister. I will of course be permitted to bring down my own search teams from the Independence? Our instruments are much more advanced than yours. We may be able to pinpoint our men right away."
* The First Minister shakes his head sadly. *
"I'm sorry, Captain D'arz. But I'm going to have to ask you to refrain from bringing down any more representitives until this matter has been resolved. As you yourself pointed out, your instruments do not work so well in the Council Building, and our are much better equipped to work in such an environment."
* D'arz glares at the old Darosian. *
"And if I decide to ignore that order?"
* Sunin smiles silkily, reminding D'arz of a grethor cat. Or the cat in that story his mother used to read, the one that disappeared, leaving only it's smile. *
"I belive your Prime Directive forbids that, Captain. Have no fear, we will keep you updated on our progress."
* He nods to the guards, who stand to either side of Captain D'arz. The half-Andorian stares back at Sunin and the rest of the council, and then turns on his heel and strides out the door. As they close upon the retreating back of the FDTF Captain, one of the other Ministers speaks up. *
"This does not bode well, Jared. The Federationers will not assist us if their men are not returned to them. We need a cure: the vellius production must continue!"
* Sunin continues to stare at the door. *
"Let me worry about the Federation, and the 'KaVara' as well. And get that fool Dolar back in here!"
* A guard scurries to obey Sunin's command, as the First Minister seats himself. *
"We will triumph here, Ministers. With or without the Federation's help."
**********
* Captain D'arz seethed as the giant doors slammed shut behind him. He was about to signal the ship, when his combadge came to life, saving him the trouble. *
=^= "Independence to Captain D'arz." =^=
"Go ahead, Mr. Smith."
* The Commander's voice sounded strained, and all of D'arz internal warnings went off. *
=^= "Sir, the USS Pasteur has arrived, and...well, I think you had better return to the ship as soon as possible." =^=
* D'arz nods. *
"I was just preparing to signal for transport when you contacted me. Have the Senior Staff assemble for a short meeting in the briefing room. I want to go over our options for getting Mr. Rasczak and his men back."
* Again, Smith sounded hesitant, and D'arz was worried. *
=^= "Um, sir. Request that you meet me in your Ready Room first. We have a small..situation." =^=
* The Captain didn't like the sound of that. *
"Alright, Commander. I will be there shortly. Recall the Doctor, as well."
=^= "She is already aboard, sir." =^=
* D'arz was a bit suprised at that, but shrugged it off. *
"Very well then, Commander. Energize."
* The captain disappears in a swirl of blue-tinged light. *
***************
"What?!!!"
* Commander Smith flinched as the Captain slammed a blue skinned fist down onto the desk, scattering the PADDs on the console. *
"I said, the Doctor and I have been transferred, and are to report aboard the Pasteur. She leaves in one hour for Forlat III. Evidently the refugees there are experiencing some sort of radiation poisoning that-"
"Enough! I heard you the first time!"
* D'arz taps a console key , and brings up the smiling face of Ensign Reed, at Ops. One look at the stern visage on her monitor is enough to make her nearly snap to attention. *
"Sir!"
"Ensign, get me Admiral Patricia Nick. Do it now."
* Reed's fingers fly over the console. She nods. *
"Transfering to your station now, sir."
* The young ensign is replaced by the FDTF logo. The Captain paces back and forth as Smith watches warily, not daring to say a word. Finally, the face of Admiral Nick appears. *
"Captain D'arz, have you anything to report on the situation on Daros?"
* D'arz leans into the pickup, his face flushed a deep blue. *
"Admiral, I must protest this...this...'appropriation' of my officers, especially in the middle of a critical mission such as this!"
* The Admiral's visage goes stone cold. *
"First of all Captain, let me remind you that your officers are also MY officers. Second of all, it is my job to place the officers of this squadron where I think they are needed most."
* It's the Admiral's turn to look flushed now. She leans into the pickup. *
"Would you agree with that....Captain?"
* D'arz releases a breath he was unaware he was holding, and sits down heavily in his chair. He rubs his eyes, and looks back into the screen, where the Admiral waits patiently. *
"Yes sir. I am sorry, Admiral. It is just that these Darosians can be so damned infuriating. I have an Away Team missing, and the Council will not let us join in the search efforts."
* The Admiral looks concerned. *
"Do you suspect the Council has anything to do with it?"
* D'arz shakes his head. *
"They seemed as suprised at the news as I was, but they know something they are not telling us. I can feel it in the pits of my stomachs."
* The Admiral nods. *
"Keep me posted, Captain. And I am sorry for the timing of the transfers. However, Doctor Davenport's expertise in the field of radiation sickness made her a natural candidate for the Forlat mission. And the Pastuer will rendezvous with the USS Okuda at Forlat III, where Commander Smith will take over the XO position. Both CMO Smith and Commander Lewis are exemplary officers, and more than able to fill the vacancies we have created."
* D'arz sighs, knowing he is fighting a losing battle. He nods to the Admiral. *
"Affirmative, Admiral. Have them report to me upon arrival. Commander Smith and Doctor Davenport will depart for the Pastuer shortly. And my sincere apologies for my earlier outburst."
* The Admiral nods, a small smile playing across her lips. *
"We all know about the center seat, Joseph. Not always the most comfortable chair on the bridge. Keep me posted."
* She crosses her arms against her chest, in the traditional clan salute. *
"We serve with honor."
* D'arz' eyebrow shoots up, and a small grin splits his face. He repeats the Admiral's gesture. *
"Our service honors us."
* The screen flashes back to the FDTF logo, and then goes black. *
************
* The Doctor gathers his notes and a padd to take to the senior officers briefing. 'It is funny I got into the habit of keeping paper copies of everything that I work on, a habit I picked up in Med School', he thinks. 'Here's hoping that I will meet the expectations of the Captain.' *
"I have an interesting idea about a possible cure to help these people, but I will have to meet with the Captain one to one, and with a conference call to Command. There is the possiblity to regrow damaged cells using protho celluar technology. Also, I will need to see if I may be able to set up a diagnostic lab on the surface to do lab and tissue research."
* The CMO is speaking the above statements into his padd as he is walking to the turbolift, and says to the Computer- * "Bridge"
"Hmmmm, interesting that the inhabitants here have an unusually high level of RBC's & WBC's, along with a high HCT. However, due to not knowing the normal parameters, this is just an idea. I will have to insist on conducting blood draws on non infected subjects, so the lab is imperative."
'Hmmm, I will have to insist on this', he thinks to himself.
***********
* On the bridge.... *
* Tara gets a message from the transporter room. *
'Sir, Commander Lewis has arrived,"
* D'arz nods. *
'Good, get one of the crewmen to take his things to his quarters. I could use a second opinion right now.'
* Mintues pass, and Commander Lewis steps on to the bridge... *
'Welcome aboard Commander. Sorry I could not give you the grand tour but...'
'That's understandable, sir, under the situation.'
'Well, I read your bio. I hear you are an excellent engineer, but I also read that you have a good negotiation skills.'
'Well, being half-Betazoid helps, but its not everything.'
'Yes. Anyway, you are all updated on the situation?'
'Yes, but how are the away team?'
'Still missing. I think you should come down with me and see if we can get anything out of the council members.'
'Do you think its wise to have us both down there? I could take another away team down.'
'No, as much it is against protical, I think we will get further if we work together. But I will take another security detail with me.'
'And try not to lose them.'
'Well, just watch our backs, and tell me if you feel anything that is not right.'
'Yes Sir.'
'Ensign, contact our new medical officer, tell him to join us when he is ready.'
'Aye Sir.'
* Lewis and D'arz enter the turbo lift. *
**********
* On the way to the bridge, as I step into the turbo lift, I receive a hail on my comm badge from the ensign on the bridge: *
=/\= "Doctor Smith, you are to report to transporter room two and meet the Captain and Commander." =/\=
=/\= "Acknlowdeged." =/\=
"Doctor to the Computer, reset lift - Transporter room two."
* As I step off the turbo-lift I see the Captain and Commander walk into the transporter room, and I walk briskly forward to catch up with them. As I walk into the room, Captain D'arz and the new Commander turn towards me, and the Captain says -*
"Welcome aboard Doctor."
"Thank you, Sir."
* The Captain gestures toward Commander Lewis. *
"This is our first officer."
* The Doctor nods and says, "Glad to meet you, sir."
* Commander Lewis has a blank look and says- "Glad to meet you Doctor."
* I think to myself, 'I wonder if I made the wrong impression?'
* Lewis smiles and says, "Don't worry Doctor, you haven't given me the wrong impression."
* The Doctor looks shocked, and the Captain smiles and says, "Doctor, our Commander is half-betazoid. Do not be too shocked. Now let us focus on the mission, and ask the Doctor - are you up to speed on the mission?"
"Yes Sir!"
"Good, Doctor. Let us get to the surface."
* The three of us step up onto the transporter pads. The Captain nods toward the transporter officer and we disappear out of the ship. *
**********
* Rasczak, Flores and Xellos are sitting on the stone floor of a rather small, crude cell. They sit staring at each other, having already determined that there were no obvious ways to escape the tiny room. Xellos speaks up. *
"I'm hungry! What do Darosians eat anyway?"
* Flores rolls her eyes at the blue-skinned 'yellowshirt'. *
"Bolian, I hope."
"Very funny, 'Diz'."
* Rasczak motions for the others to quiet down. *
"Can it, you two - someone's coming!"
* The Away Team stands as the lock is turned and the heavy door opens to admit Kala, the young woman who had abducted them. Two large guards loom behind her. She turns and ushers them back outside, closing the door behind them. Kala looks around at the tiny cell, her ebony eyes appearing to take in everything at once. *
"I apologize for the accomodations, but we are not accustomed to kidnapping."
* The young Darosian opens the door and speaks softly to one of the guards. *
"Jakir - go down to the kitchens and bring our guests some food."
* The guard looks over her shoulder menacingly, but complies with Kala's request. She shuts the door, and turns back to the tiny group. *
"I am truly sorry we have been driven to this, but Sunin and the others refuse to listen to us. Our people here are dying, and the Government does nothing."
* Rasczak interrupts. *
"Now hold on. We are here precisely because your government requested aid. That doesn't sound like they're doing nothing to me."
* Kala laughs, a short bark, full of contempt. *
"They called you to save their own skins! This disease has plagued my people for generations! Only now, when they themselves are afflicted, do they seek a cure!"
* Now it was Flores' turn to interrupt. *
"Why do you keep saying 'my people'? Aren't you all Darosian?"
* Kala turns to Diz, fire in her black eyes. *
"Yes Federation, we are. That is something the Government of this planet sometimes forgets."
* She takes a seat across from the Away Team. *
"A long time ago, it seems like forever really, I was a Sentinel. I did the Council's bidding, upheld the laws and truths of Karan City, lived righteous. Then I was assigned to Bashar, the city of the miners."
* Tears well in her dark eyes, but do not fall. She stares far away, as if seeing it all as she describes it. *
"I was appalled. The 'Tal Diar'- the 'Dark Tide', was everywhere. Mother's thrust their children at me as they lay dying in the streets. Poverty reigned; people, starving, fought for scraps of food. It was hopelessness on a mass scale. And yet, as long as the vellius production continued on schedule, the Council looked the other way."
* Her visage grows hard now with the remembrance of those times. *
"When I returned to Karan, I immediately petioned the Council on the Miner's behalf. And do you know what they did? Do you, Federation?"
* Flores nods slowly. *
"Nothing."
* Kala stands now, her anger boiling to the surface. *
"That's right, Federation. They did nothing. Nothing! Our people - the people who made this planet viable, who loved this world and worshipped its Gods - dying! That was when it hit me...they knew. They knew that the disease is somehow tied into the vellius production, so they did nothing. They knew! That was when I left, to fight for a just cause. For the true Darosians."
* Rasczak stops her. *
"Wait. If they know what causes it, why don't they just try to develop a cure?"
* Kala turns to him. *
"Because they don't care. As long as it was confined to Bashaar, it didn't matter. Now that the Capitol is infected, they are concerned."
* Flores speaks up again. *
"Listen, our Captain will do everything in his power to help your people, but he will not negotiate with you as long as you hold us hostage. If you free us, we can plead your case to him, and get you the medical help you need!"
* Kala shakes her head. *
"The time for talk is long past. Again, I am sorry. We will demand that the goverment acknowledge the ties between the 'Tal Diar' and the vellius mining. We will demand equal medical treatment, and cessation of all vellius mining until the cure has been found."
* Xellos shakes his head. *
"Your government will never agree to that! Vellius is the cornerstone of the Darosian economy. It would ruin you as a planet!"
* Kala looks at him gravely. *
"For your sake, blue-man, you had better hope that you are wrong. Because if the Council does not meet our demands, I will have you executed, one by one."
* The door opens as the guard returns with the prisoner's food. Kala turns to leave. *
"Enjoy your meal. It may be your last."
* The Darosians retreat and the heavy door closes behind them with a resounding boom. As Xellos examines the food and grimaces, Flores lets out a sigh and looks at Rasczak. *
"Well, this just getting better and better. Any bright ideas, anyone?"
**********
* Rasczak looked at the other two then spoke up. *
Rasczak: "I've had enough of her threats. We have enough information; we're getting out of here tonight."
* Rasczak reached to his ankle and unholstered his phaser, the other two did the same. He picked up a rock, and with their combined knowledge they scratched a plan of the village on the floor. *
Rasczak: "This is the most effective way out. This way we have less chance of being spotted, than the three of us running straight across the center of the village."
Xellos: "Next, is how to get out of the cell..."
Flores: "I have an idea about that: Xellos you lie down here. Sir, you call the guard from the door."
* Flores knelt down beside the Bolian, and started shaking him gently. Rasczak put his mouth to the peephole of the heavy door. *
Rasczak: "Help! Guard! Help, one of my men is very sick!"
Guard: "Now you will know what its like for the people you know to die in front of your eyes."
* (think, think!) *
Rasczak: "Kala will be very angry if one of us dies..."
* The guard grunted and moved towards the door. *
Guard: "STEP BACK!"
* Rasczak retreated to the other side of the room. *
* The guard entered and prodded Flores with his rifle. *
Guard: "You too! Over there, with him."
* Flores stood up and moved toward Rasczak. Rasczak nodded to signal the guard wasn't paying attention to her, she turned phaser in hand and fired. The guard flew two meters backwards and hit the ground with a thud. *
Flores: "He'll be out for about one and a half hours."
* Xellos got up and dusted himself down. *
Rasczak: "Lets get moving!"
* They moved out toward the front of the Jail when a familiar glint of metal on the guards small desk caught Rasczak's eye. He went to investigate. *
Rasczak: "A combadge!"
* He tapped it, but only a buzzing sound filled the air. *
Rasczak: "Damn, the Council are still blocking communications from the village!" *
* He turned to the others.*
"Keep moving!"
* They moved through the shadows which now enveloped the village. Eventually they reached they outer perimeter undetected and started to run. It was difficult to traverse this terrain at daytime, but it was even harder now, all the cracks in the rocky landscape made a very bad running track. *
Rasczak: "I'd say about another three kilometers, till we clear the comm blackout."
Flores: "Another hour running?! Oh my god!"
* Suddenly an alarm sounded, from the village. They all realised that they had to double-time it now. The locals had the home advantage. They knew what the terrain was like, and the fastest route through it. *
Rasczak: "That'll be us. We have to go faster! Come on, suck it up!!"
* They ran and ran, for what seemed like an eternity. Then they heard the trackers coming up from behind. They were stopped in their tracks by a cloaked figure who stepped out from behind a rock, rifle in hand, pointed menacingly at the trio. *
Kala: "Drop your weapons now and put your hands behind your heads!"
* Xellos and Flores both looked at Rasczak. He nodded compliance and the phasers hit the rocky ground simultaneously. Rasczak also tapped the combadge as he dropped it.*
*********
Reed: "Sir, we're detecting a Starfleet signal from the planet."
Resker: "On audio ensign."
=/\= Kala: "................nd put your hands behind
your heads." =/\=
=/\= Rasczak: "There are four of us against one of you.
You can't kill us all with just one projectile rifle!" =/\=
=/\= Kala: "I don't have to. I know you won't risk one
of your lives for the others, and my hunting
party will be here in a few moments." =/\=
* Resker smiled to herself. She gestured for Ensign Reed to cut the transmission. She knew Rasczak was resourceful but this amazed even her! *
Resker: "Ensign Reed, close in on the transmission and beam the four closest humanoid lifeforms directly to the bridge .... oh, and lose the rifle in transport."
Reed: "Aye sir, energizing."
* Rasczak smiled to himself as the blue haze enveloped his body. His plan worked! He could just make out the shocked look on Kala's face, as she too was beamed to the Independence. *
Resker: "Welcome aboard."
* She nodded to the waiting security detail. *
Resker: "Gentlemen, would you escort our guest to the brig please?"
* Rasczak looked at Kala and spoke up. *
Rasczak: "Sir, I don't believe she poses a threat at this time. Suggest diplomatic quarters, sir."
Resker: "Very well, but there will be guards posted outside her door just in case."
* Resker nodded at the security officers, and they moved Kala toward the turbolift. She then turned to the rescued security detail. *
Resker: "Welcome back, Ensign Rasczak. Resume your station after you get cleaned up."
Rasczak; "Aye sir! Good to be back, sir!"
* The trio moved to the turbolift and went to clean up. *
Resker: "Ensign Reed, open a channel to Captain D'arz."
* Captain D'arz was just about to enter the Darosian council chambers when his combadge chimed. *
* He tapped it *
=/\= D'arz: "Go ahead." =/\=
Resker: "Sir, we have a new development. I suggest you get back here, ASAP."
=/\= D'arz: "Acknowledged, D'arz out." =/\=
D'arz: "Parker, you and Mister Smith continue on with the negotiations. Don't commit to anything: I will be back as soon as possible."
* He tapped his combadge and requested beam out. He too was beamed directly to the bridge, and was extremely surprised to see Ensign Rasczak operating his station. *
**********
* Captain D'arz grins as he catches sight of Rasczak at his duty station, looking slightly haggard, but relatively uninjured. He smiles at the young man. Del Resker begins to get up from the center seat, but the Captain stops her with a gesture. *
"Not so fast, Del. I have a feeling I am not going to be aboard very long. You have the conn."
* Startled, she sits back with a grin. The Captain turns back to Rasczak. *
"Welcome back Mister Rasczak. Let us save the details for later. Your team is alright?"
* The Sec/Tac Chief nods. *
"Yes sir. We have a guest, as well."
* The half-andorian nods, one hand stroking the neatly trimmed platinum goatee that adorns his chin. *
"That would be one Kala Sharah, former Sentinel of the City."
* Now it was the Ensigns turn to be suprised. *
"You know her? Sir?"
* The Captain chuckles. *
"Only by reputation. The Darosian government has branded her a terrorist."
"She didn't seem to think much of them either, Captain."
* The Captain smiled, and gestured towards the turbolift. *
"Well Mister Rasczak, there are two sides to every story. Let us go hear Kala's. I have a feeling in my stomachs that I already know what she is going to say."
* He sniffs the air around Rasczak as they head for the lift. *
"And then I order you to take a long shower, Ensign."
* Rasczak grins as the men enter the turbolift. D'arz turns to address Del as the doors slide closed. *
"Mind the store, Mister Resker."
* As the sound of the lift fades away, the helmsman sits back in the Captain's chair, a big grin threatening to split her face. *
**********
* Meanwhile Smith and Lewis knock on Dolar's personal chambers.....*
'Come in gentlemen, please make yourself comfortable! I don't believe I have had the pleasure.'
'Thank you Counsellor. The Captain was called away: we may have something on the location of our men', Parker said, without giving away too much. *
'Well, I hope you find them, and when you do be sure to inform us. We have ways of dealing with criminals.'
* Parker looked into him with his black eyes, but felt nothing. Dolar leaned forward to pick up a glass of alcohol, revealing his wounds. *
'Would you mind if I had a look at that?' Smith asked opening his med kit. *
'No, go right ahead.'
* Smith pulled out his dermal regenarator and moved it over Dolar's wounds. *
'Amazing! The scarring is all gone!'
'Yes, our technology has quiet a lot to offer. Unlike other alliances, we can give you technology to help your people', Parker commented. *
'Actually, if only the Council would take our help, just as you have with your wound', Smith added. *
'Yes', Dolar said uncomfortably. 'But what if a culture were to inflict wounds upon my people?'
'We do offer protection to all races', Parker replied. *
'Yes, but we are a proud race. Wouldn't it be better to protect ourselves?'
'And, I guess giving the technology to defend yourself is what your after.'
* Dolar smiled in agreement, but Parker and Smith looked at each other with concern. *
**********
* Rasczak walks next to the Captain as the two stride down the corridor leading to the diplomatic quarters. He had just filled D'arz in on what had happened planetside, and the Captain nodded. D'arz felt somewhat better now that he knew who the players were, and their motives. Some of the pieces of this puzzle were falling into place. Some were still missing. The Captain glanced over at the Ensign as they approached the Security detail assigned to Kala's quarters. *
"Nicely done, Ensign. I would like a full report logged as soon as we are finished here. Then you can go grab that shower."
* The 'yellowshirts' stiffen ramrod straight as they see the duo approaching, and D'arz supresses a grin. Nodding seriously to the two young Crewmen as Ensign Rasczak keys in his security override, the Captain follows Rasczak into the darkened room. As their eyes adjust to the darkness they see Kala standing at the windows, silouetted against the brilliant dayside of Daros. She speaks without turning as the two officers come to a halt behind her, her voice full of sorrow and wonder. *
"It's beautiful, isn't it? I never thought I would ever see it this way. I mean, you see pictures but...it's just not the same."
* The Captain nods, understanding. Kala continues. *
"Look, there is Bh'ala Bay. And Solos Province, by the G'tigh mountains, where my parents met. Our world, our lives...one and the same, are they not?"
* She turns to the Starfleet men, tears streaming from her black eyes. *
"Would that I could bring each and every member of the Council here, so that they could look upon this fragile bubble of life shining here in the darkness. Perhaps then they would understand."
* D'arz moves forward, stepping from the gloom into the light shed by Daros, a cerulian hand extended to the young Darosian rebel. *
* Make them understand, Kala. Let us make them understand, together. The Federation will mediate for you, help you get the medical attention you need for your people. *
* She shakes her head, sadly. *
"The Council will never agree to negotiate with miners. The vellius is too important to them. It's the main reason they began moving refinement centers off the ocean floors and onto the surface. They wanted more control for themselves, and less for us."
* The Captain still holds out his hand. *
"Kala, I know a few things that Sunin and the other Council members do not. Trust me Kala. Do it for your followers, do it for all of Daros."
"Listen to him, Kala! Let us help you!", Rasczak adds.*
* The young Darosian woman looks back at the huge orb hanging brightly in the blackness, its surface reflected in her huge, dark eyes. Then she turns around, stepping away from the window, and firmly clasps the hand of the half-andorian Captain. *
"Alright, Captain. We will try your Federation way, for the sake of my people. But be forewarned Captain D'arz, Sunin and the others will never give up power so easily."
* D'arz smiles, as he leads the Darosian from the window, to a seat by the table. *
"Let me worry about that. First, we need to plan."
* He turns to Rasczak, who has been standing there beaming. *
"Ensign, get me a pot of Raktajino from the replicator, and two mugs. Have Mister Lewis and Doctor Smith recalled to the ship, and have Lewis assemble the Senior Staff in the Conference Room at 15:00 hours."
"Yes, sir!"
* Rasczak retrieves the raktajino, placing it on the table between the Captain and Kala. As he begins to leave, the Captain calls out to him. *
"Rasczak!"
"Sir?"
"Tell the XO to make it 15:30 hours. Give yourself time to grab that shower."
* The Security Chief grins. *
"Thank you, sir. I'll do that!"
* As the Ensign rushes off, the Captain turns back to the Darosian rebel leader. *
"Now Kala, as I was saying, I know a certain Admiral who would be very interested in what is going on here....."
**********
* Smith and Lewis decide to sit in on the Council meeting....*
* A voice rings out.*
'The First Minister, Sunin, recognizes Councillor Dolar, Chairman of Planet Defense, and allows him to speak!'
'Yes, Councilman Dolar?' Sunin asked as he sat in high position of the court room.
'I have great news First Minister! We have an offer from the Cardassian Government! They have offered us protection and technology, all in exchange for our alliegence, and for us to start trading them our vellius crystals for their loyalty and service', Dolar annouced to the rest of the council. *
'That is good news Dolar..' Sunin agreed.
*Another Councillor stood up. Again the voice boomed over the assembly.*
'The First Minister recognizes Second Minister Tapelle, of the southern planet provence.'
'First Minister, we have been trading with the Federation on and off for the last two years now. They have the finest medical research for our current problem. They will not assist us if we side with the Cardassian Union!'
* Dolar raises his hand. *
'Yes Dolar?'
'The Cardassian Goverment has excellent medical resources, in some ways superior to the Federation!'
* Tapelle counters. *
'I do not like their past ethics in all aspects of their culture. Who knows what they would do with our ore?'
* Now it was Dolar's turn. *
'What if an uprising comes from this "Resistance"? We have no way to protect our High Residence! You know Starfleet's prime directive! I don't think the Cardassians would even think about it if we asked them to step in!'
* Dolar turned and saw Smith and Lewis watching intently. *
'He is very stressed. So is Sunin, but I don't think its us. I think its Councillor Tapelle', Lewis said as he tried to bore into Dolar's emotions. *
'I remember reading about this: if Sunin does not get full support from the Second Minister, then Sunin has to challenge him. Which means if Tapelle gets the support of the most of the provinces, he has authority to call for a new First Minister', Smith added.
=^= 'Ensign Rasczak to Commander Lewis.' =^=
'Lewis here.'
=^='Commander we have Kala. The Captain wants you to gather the senior staff for a meeting in 30 minutes.'=^=
'Thank you Ensign. Lewis out. Come on Doctor, they will probably be here a lot longer than our meeting. We will talk to Tapelle later.'
* Smith and Lewis walk out of the court........*
*********
* As the Doctor and the First Officer sat there in the office considering thier next move, it was made for them by the sound of the XO's combadge chirping. *
=/\= "Bridge to Commander Lewis. Your presence is required, as well as the Doctor's." =/\=
=/\= "Acknowleged, Independence." =/\=
* Both officers stand and straighten their uniform jackets and the XO says, " Sir, I am afarid that our meeting must come to an end. I would like to continue this line of dialog further."
* The XO senses a sense of alarm and worry rise to the surface, and hears the name Kala. The XO keeps a straight face and shakes the representive's hand. He steps away from the desk and the Doctor steps behind and to the right of the XO as he taps his comm badge. *
=/\= "Commander Leiws to Independence: two to beam up." =/\=
=/\= "Acknowledged." =/\=
* The two officers disappear in a glimmering twins shafts of light, and the Council representive sits there to ponder, 'What is going on, and why did they leave?' *
**********
* The Captain entered the Conference Room, with Kala Sharah in tow. The Senior Staff seated themselves and D'arz stood at the head of the table, PADD in hand. *
"Alright, everyone. I believe we may have a solution to some of the problems at hand. First, I would like everyone to hear Mr. Tejan's report."
* The Science Officer glanced at his notes, tapping a few controls on his PADD before speaking. *
"The Captain asked me to collect all information available on vellius production, and to correlate that information with the available data on the 'Dark Tide' epidemic left to us by Doctor Davenport."
* Smiles around the table. The former CMO was well liked by the crew. Tejan continues.*
"Here's what we found."
* He taps a control on the PADD, and a holographic display pops up, hovering over the table. It shows a graph, relatively flat, that increases steadily, peaking at one end. *
"This is the data for surface mining production. You can see how output rises dramatically as they move production to the surface."
* Tejan taps his PADD again, bringing up a different graph, with a similar curve. *
"This is the data for 'Tal Diar' infection rates, for areas where surface mining occurs."
* He taps a few controls and the graphs slide together, and it is obvious to all assembled that they are nearly identical. There are mutters around the table, and Rasczak speaks up.*
"The Darosian government has to have known about this!"
* The Captain nods. *
"You are absolutely correct, Mister Rasczak. They do indeed know. Continue please, Mister Tejan."
* The young Kalandan nods, switching the display to that of a molecular simulation, which slowly rotates above the conference table. *
"This is the vellius molecule, before the refining process."
* He begins the simulation. *
"When the vellius is refined on the ocean floor, the molecule contracts, and a few of these free radicals are released."
* Above the table the molecule tightens, and a one or two particles detach and float free. The Lieutenant resets the hologram. *
"However, when the vellius is refined on the surface, the molecule becomes more fragile, and many more of these particles are released."
* This time the molecule contracts sharply, and particles are released in all directions. He shuts down the sim. *
"I don't know exactly why this happens; I'm a Science Officer, not a doctor. But I would hazard a guess that it has something to do with the tremendous pressures at the ocean's bottom. Perhaps it was keeping the molecule more stable during the process."
* Doctor Smith breaks in. *
"I'll want that information transferred to the Sickbay database, of course."
* Tejan nods. *
"Already done, Doctor."
* Smith is tapping furiously on his PADD, making calculations as he speaks. *
"Sir, I would bet my Med degree that these free particles are what is causing the 'Dark Tide'. Maybe with some sort of metaphasic shielding, and some radiation protocols...Tejan what do you think?"
* The Science Officer nods excitedly. *
"I was thinking along the same lines! Set up a small multi-phasic generator-"
* D'arz grinned as he watched his Senior Officers. They really were shaping up to be a tight-knit group. He almost hated to interrupt them. *
"Gentelmen! Let us finish the meeting so that you two can follow up on that course of action. Mister Lewis, you have something to report as well?"
* The Independence's new XO nods, leaning forward and resting his hands on the table. *
"It seems the Cardassians are getting interested in the Darosian situation. The Doctor and I spotted two representitives at the Council Meeting, and Sentinel Dolar was making a pretty good case for hooking up with them."
* Rasczak shook his head in disbelief. *
"The Cardassians? Shouldn't they be worried about rebuilding their own planet, rather than meddling in the affairs of others? The Dominion War left Cardassia in pretty bad shape."
* The Captain shakes his head as he looks over at the Security Chief. *
"Not neccessarily, Ensign. Cardassia is in dire need of funds for that rebuilding, and cornering the market on a desperately needed medication like vellius would go a long way towards that goal."
"Surely the Federation would stop them, sir!"
* This time Lewis spoke up. *
"Daros is not a Federation member, Ensign. Although the Paulson Nebula lies deep in Federation territory, Daros is still a sovereign planet. Although the Federation may not like it, we may have no choice but to stand by and watch as it happens."
* The Captain picks up the thread of conversation. *
"Ensign Reed, have you a report on the surface scans I asked you to run?"
* The diminutive officer flashed a grin and held up a PADD. *
"Right here, sir."
* D'arz nods. *
"Transfer that data to my station please."
* Reed taps a few controls and completes that transfer. The Captain studies the data, a grin slowly forming on his dusky blue face. He turns to Ensign Rasczak. *
"Mister Rascak. I would like you to retrieve a broadband transmitter from the Engineering Department. Mister Byrne is altering one specifically for our needs. I have been taking a crash course in Darosian law and politics, courtesy of Ms. Sharah, and I would like to return to the Council Chambers to put some of that knowledge to good use, at her request."
* The Ensign nods. He had been wondering why the Chief Engineer had been absent from the meeting. He turns to the Captain. *
"Why the transmitter, sir?"
* D'arz smiles, an innocent look coming over his face. *
"Why, I would just like for everyone on the ship to see how we fare in the council meeting."
"But sir, there's bound to be an enourmous amount of signal leakage from a broadband transmitter like that."
* A sly look comes over the Captain's features. *
"Hmmm...enough to blanket the whole planet, do you think?"
* Now Lewis breaks in, smiling as well. *
"Well, if our navigational deflector were 'accidentally' activated, I'm pretty sure that the signal bounce-back would cover most of the planet."
* The Captain smiles at the assembled officers. *
"Alright then. Mister Rasczak, retrieve the transmitter and meet in me in transporter room three. Mister Lewis, you have the conn."
* As the officers rise from their seats, D'arz walks over to Kala. *
"Are you ready?"
* She nods, looking up at the Starfleet Captain. *
"For my people, I will be ready."
* D'arz takes the Darosian rebel by the arm, leading her to the door. *
"Let us go then. The Council awaits."
**********
* The Doctor hurries to his sickbay office and sits down at the table, taking his padd out. *
"Hmmm? This is real interesting", he thinks as he looks at the new data on the computer's screen. *
"Doctor to Mister Tejan."
=/\= "Tejan here, Doctor." =/\=
"Mister Tejan how would you like to meet me on Holodeck 2. I have a few ideas on what this molecule is and with your help we may just come up with the right frequencies for the shields, and also an enzyme that may boost thier body's natural immunity system."
=/\= "Acknowledged, Doctor. On my way." =/\=
* The Doctor grabs his padd and heads toward the turbolift, thinking to himself,"I think we've got this one." He grins to himself. *
**********
* The Darosian Council is preparing to begin its session as three pillars of light materialize in the cavernous chamber, much to the consternation of the assembled Darosian representitives. The forms of the Captain, Rasczak and Kala Sharah appear before Sunin and the Grand Council. The security chief activates the transmitter and begins scanning the proceedings, as Captain D'arz strides to the dais, looking up at the assembled Ministers. *
"Greetings to you, First Minister, and to the honored assembly."
* Sunin looks down upon the half-Andorian officer, his black eyes ablaze with hatred, and gestures at Kala. *
"Captain, I see you have brought us a gift! The head of the Ka'Vara herself. You have our gratitude. Now leave this assembly, you have no business in our affairs."
* The Captain shakes his head, the light refracting off his platinum hair. *
"I am afraid you are mistaken, First Minister. I am here at Ms. Sharah's request, as her position of Minister of Production allows."
* An older Darosian at the end of the dais begins to sputter. *
"Preposterous! I am Minister of Production! This woman is a terrorist! Sunin, must we endure this nonsense?"
* The First Minister shakes his head. *
"No, we do not. Dolar! Arrest these intruders!"
"With pleasure, First Minister!"
* As First Sentinel Dolar approaches to carry out Sunin's order, the Captain holds up a PADD. *
"Wait, Sunin. Does not Darosian law state that a Minister is appointed by majority support of the people?"
* Again Sunin's eyes flash, this time with fear and anger, and he holds up a hand to stay the Sentinels. *
"What has that to do with the acts of terror committed by the Ka'Vara, and by this woman?"
* D'arz holds the PADD lightly tapping the controls. *
"According to our scans of the planet, the Darosian miners comprise over sixty percent of the planetary population. And those people overwhelmingly support Kala Sharah and the 'Lightbringers'."
* Sunin looks down in disgust. *
"Pah! 'Lightbringers'! The Ka'Vara will throw all of Daros into darkness!"
* D'arz shakes his head. *
"We also possess information on vellius mining that the general population would be very interested in, concerning the 'Dark Tide', or as your people call it, the 'Tal Diar'."
* Sunin sits back, mulling over the Captain's statement. *
"You are bluffing, Captain D'arz. The People will never belive an outsider such as yourself."
* The Captain nods, as if agreeing with the First Minister. *
"Perhaps, but since this proceeding is being transmitted all over Daros, why do we not let them decide?"
* The doors burst open to admit a harried looking Sentinel, his dark eyes open wide. *
"Minister! The miners have taken to the streets! They are massing and heading for the Council building!"
* Another elderly Minister rises to his feet. *
"Sunin! Do something! If they find out-"
"Silence!"
* The First Minister is shaking with rage, barely under control. He visibly calms himself, looking up and down the dais. *
"Ministers, the Council is required by law to examine the evidence, and to appoint Kala Sharah to the position of Minister if-"
"NO!"
* Dolar is seething with fury, the First Sentinel's grey face darkening as he points his ceremonial spear at the dais. Sunin stares at him icily. *
"Sentinel, you will be silent!"
"I will not be silent as you sit here and give the planet to these, these g'takk! Damn the miners! They will mine the vellius and the 'Tal Diar' be damned!"
* Sunin stands now, his face a dark grey as well.
*
"Dolar! I will not tell you again to be silent! We do what we must for the good of Daros!"
"As do I!"
* In a blur of motion, Dolar whips the spear at the First Minister with such force that it goes completely through the old Darosian, impaling him on the shaft. Black blood gurgles out of the Darosian's mouth as screams echo in the huge chamber, and the assembled Darosian's scuttle for cover. Dolar bellows in triumph! *
"No more hiding behind lies! I rule Daros now! Sentinels! Kill the infidels!"
* The Captain and Lieutenant Rasczak attempt to pull their phasers, but the Sentinels are upon them too quickly, and the fight degenerates into a fierce hand-to-hand battle for their lives. *
**********
* As the Doctor was heading to holodeck 2 he was stopped by his comm badge beeping. *
=/\= "Doctor Smith, report to Sickbay - stat! Possible serious injuries incoming!" =/\=
"Acknowledged!"
* The Doctor takes off at a run and wonders who or what happened to cause the XO to bring him back to sickbay. Then he remembers that the Captain and the others went to the surface. *
* The Doctor enters sickbay and goes to the computer. He activates the screen and says, "Computer: display live broadcast of the council meeting."
+ "Acknowledged" +
* The scene on the screen is slightly distorted and jumping around, all flashes of colors, until the Doctor realizes that it was someone's limbs striking out in Starfleet colors. *
"Doctor to Bridge. I am looking at the broadcast now. Get them out of there, now! Please!"
=/\= "We are trying Doctor! Now let us do our best, and stand-by!" =/\=
* The Doctor is visbly shaken, when he hears the security chief say, "Captain! Watch out behind you!"
**********
* Commander Lewis looks at the view screen. As he watches his commrades being attacked by the council and their guards, he calms down and tries to think.... *
"Alexy, can you get them out?"
*Alexy keeps drasitcaly taping her con
"Can't get a solid lock, sir. They have some kind blanket of signals creating echoes, which is fooling our targeting scanners....damn it!"
* Alexy keeps working frantically, trying to sift though the echoes. Parker then turns to Liam who is also was trying to sift through the conflicting signals. *
"Ensign if I remember, their weapons technology is very outdated. I think they may be effected by EM fields."
* Liam looks up. Parker senses that he knows what he is on about. *
"Let's help em out, Ensign!"
"Aye sir, powering up the deflector array."
* Parker turns around to watch the screen. He sees Xellos out of it and Wesson on the floor clutching a wound to his leg. *
"Now, Mr. Liam!", Parker orders. *
"Emmiting EM pulse to the main structure."
* The ship moves into position and fires the pulse. *
* The bridge crew watch the screen as the firing from the council side stops. Dolar hits his gun and tries to fire again, but it doesn't work. He looks down at his weapon and sees smoke coming out of it, and starts to notice it in his men's weapons also. He throws his weapon down in anger. *
"Good thinking, sir!", T'lara compliments. *
"Bridge to Captain D'arz. Are you okay, Captain?"
=^= "Yes Commander, but a few of us are not. Can you get to us?" =^=
* Parker looks at Alexy and senses that she is not getting anywhere. *
"We can't beam you out: we will keep trying. In the meantime I will send Doctor Smith down in a shuttle."
=^= "Okay, but hurry. I am not sure we can hold them off with out making this worse." =^=
"Aye sir. Lewis, out."
* He taps a control. *
"Bridge to Doctor Smith."
=^= "Smith, here." =^=
"Saddle up Doctor, you're going to have to take the long way. Meet up with the team in shuttle bay 2."
=^= "Okay, but I will activate the EMH in case you get through with the transporters. Smith out." =^=
"Godspeed, Doctor", Parker mumbles to himself as he sits back in the command chair. "Okay, lets see if we can get them out before he arrives!"
The Doctor grabs a field medical pack and reaches into his drawer and grabs his personal phaser, putting it into place as he heads towards the shuttle bay.
* He meets the security team at the shuttle and climbs aboard.*
”Doctor to Bridge - permission to disembark.”
=/\= “Permission granted - and good luck, Mister Smith.” =/\=
” Thanks. I may need it .”
* The Doctor nods at the security officer at the helm to disembark and the shuttle lifts off the ground and moves toward the docking bay door that is open and moves out into space and engages impulse engines. Smith looks at the planet and wonders if all the difficulties are worth the pain. “Oh well”, he thinks, and checks his equipment. He also sees the senior NCO having his men do the same. *
********
* (Meanwhile, back on the planet..... )
"Captain! Look out behind you!"
* D'arz ducks, crouching low as the blade whizzes through the spot where his neck had been a moment ago. He kicks back behind him, grateful for Rasczak's warning, and connects with the midsection of the Darosian who had rudely attempted to remove his head from his shoulders. The Sentinel flies backward, into two more Darosians that had just rearmed themselves. Nodding a quick thanks to the Security Chief, he picked up his would-be executioner's sword, testing the heft of it as more Darosians approached. Rasczak wiped the black blood from his own blade, as he spied the oncoming Sentinels. *
"This definitely looks like a problem. Any word from the ship yet, sir?"
* The Captain shakes his head, and looks at the Ensign. *
"Not yet. But I am sure that Mister Lewis is hard at work on the problem."
* A harsh voice interrupts him. *
"Federation! Come out and meet your doom at the hands of the rightful ruler of this planet!"
* D'arz peeks around the overturned stone table, to see Dolar, First Sentinel and self proclaimed ruled of Daros. The Darosian brandishes an energy weapon, crude but effective, and unaffected by the dampening field as well. With his phaser hanging useless by his side, the Captain stands as Rasczak attempts to pull him back behind the cover of the table. *
"Sir! He'll fry you where you stand!"
* D'arz leans down, pointing a blue finger in the Ensign's face. *
"We need to buy some time, Ensign. Keep your hand on your sword, and stand ready."
"Yes sir."
* The Captain stands once again, Darosian sword held high. *
"Dolar! If you have any honor you will fight me now, man to man, steel on steel!"
* The Darosian laughs, and raises his energy weapon. His men follow suit as the big Sentinel snarls contemptuously. *
"No, Offworlder. I will not fight you. I will kill you now, and leave your smoldering corpses here for all offworlders to witness! No longer will Daros be ruled by outsiders! I do not recognize the challenge of an Offworlder!"
* As they raise their disruptors, the Sentinel's weapons begin to smoke, causing them to shout in dismay. One weapon actually bursts into flames, taking out the Darosian wielding it as it explodes. Dolar bellows in rage, throwing down his weapon as he pulls his sword. His men follow suit. *
"More Federation interference! Sentinels! Kill them all!"
* The Darosians, mad with bloodlust, charge the FDTF officers. Rasczak has taken his place at the Captain's side as they stand to protect the wounded. *
"Nice trick by the XO. Too bad we're not gonna get a chance to tell him, sir."
* D'arz nods, trying to concentrate on which Darosian to strike first, when a spear thuds to the ground in front of the Sentinels, halting their advance on the Starfleet officers. A female voice cuts through their startled exclamations. *
"Dolar!"
* The First Sentinel whirls, catching sight of Kala Sharah, her hair matted with black Darosian blood, her black eyes full of fire. *
"Fight ME you squealing k'takk! You dishonor all Darosians with your continued existence! Or do you fear to fight a female?"
* She spits at the Sentinel, who is in such a state of rage he can only stand and shake, turning grayer by the moment. Finally, he snaps! *
"Destroy her!"
* The sentinels murmur among themselves, unsure of what to do. One steps forward, a look of contempt on his face. *
"She has issued Challenge! You know the laws! Or is she right? Do you fear her?"
* Dolar strikes out with his sword, lightning quick, burying the blade in the Sentinel. The others are silent as he slumps to the ground. *
"Are there any others who doubt me?"
* No reply comes from the Sentinels. Dolar turns to Kala, a wicked grin on his gray face as the black blood darkens his blade. *
"Come, Little One! Come, Betrayer! I will cleave you in two, and then I will slay your pet offworlders!"
* Kala sneers at the much larger Darosian. *
"You talk too much, fat one!"
* Crying out, they spring into combat, their blades showering them with sparks as they thrust and parry. Entranced by the amazing swordsmanship, it takes the Captain a moment to realize his combadge is beeping. He steps away, keeping an eye on the combatants as he taps the badge in response. *
=/\= "Bridge to Captain D'arz. Are you okay , Captain?" =/\=
"Yes, Commander. But some of us are not."
* The Captain glances back at Xellos and the other wounded. Steel rings on steel in the background. *
"Can you get to us?"
* There is a short pause, and D'arz looks up to see Kala parry a vicious downward slash by Dolar. Lewis comes back on. *
=/\= "We can't beam you out: We will keep trying. In the meantime, I will send Doctor Smith down in a shuttle." =/\"
* D'arz nods, as the Darosians cheer on the combatants. *
"Okay, but hurry. I am not sure we can hold them off without making this worse."
=/\= "Aye, sir. Lewis out." =/\=
* D'arz taps out the connection, moving back to where Rasczak stands, still at the ready with his sword. *
"Lewis is still trying to extract us."
* Rasczak nods, gesturing to the fight with his sword. *
"That's good, sir. Because I'm not sure which way this thing's gonna go."
* The officers stand by, watching the two Darosians fight for their lives against each other, millions of lives hanging in the balance. *
********
* Meanwhile, the senior NCO approaches the Doctor and tells him that his men are ready, and all the equipment is at peak efficiency. *
* The Doctor nods and gives a weak smile. *
* The Helm officer calls the bridge and over the loud speaker - "3 minutes to landing site!"
* The security team stands by the shuttle bay door and charges their weapons. The Doctor stands beside the NCO and taps him on the shoulder . *
“I know that you are an expert, but only kill if you absolutely have to.”
* The NCO says, "Aye, sir. You heard the man - set phasers on stun.”
* The Doctor says, "Thank you."
* The shuttle hovers over the roof of the Counsel chambers and lands with barely a thud. The doors open and the team fans out in a protective circle. They say ‘all clear!’, and the Doctor steps out with his phaser in his hand. The team approaches the roof access door and the NCO gets out his tricorder and scans the door. *
"CLEAR!"
* The man next to the door opens it and the 2nd and 3rd man go in and secure the top of the stairs and the team with the DOCTOR following them goes down the stairs and they hear clanging and the sound of heavy footfalls. The NCO says "Stay Sharp guys!"
* The Doctor follows the team to a set of heavy doors and the Doctor taps the NCO and gives the OK sign since he has been here before this is the council chambers. *
* The NCO gives the team the sign to split into two groups to go right and left when doors are breached. The NCO activates his comm badge and says -
“Staff Sergeant Hughes to Chief. We are at the door - you may want to get down. The charges are set!”
=/\= “Chief to Hughes - acknowledged.” =/\=
* Inside the room, the security chief grabs the Captain by the shoulder. *
“Sir, my team is outside. Get behind the table now, sir - this will be loud and fast!”
********
* As Rasczak shoves Captain D'arz behind the cover of the stone table, a loud boom resounds throughout the chamber. The huge door to the Council chambers is blown from its hinges, but the assembled Darosians barely seem to notice, all their attention on the two combatants in the center of the room. The Captain sees Sergeant Hughes rush into the room, followed closely by two more Starfleet Marines, and a small contingent of the Independence's Security team. Doctor Smith trails behind, stopping to check on Xellos, who lies leaning against a pillar breathing raggedly. Hughes rushes over to D'arz, crouching next to the Captain. *
"Don't mean to rush you gentlemen, but I believe we're double-parked."
* D'arz nods, not quite understanding the idiom, but getting the meaning behind it. He speaks quickly, very much aware of the battle raging behind him between Kala and Dolar. *
"Very good, Sergeant. Get the wounded out from under the dampening field, and have them beamed aboard the Independence. Then you and your men get back aboard the shuttle and wait for me there."
* The Sergeant looks dismayed. *
"Begging your pardon, Captain. But my orders were to bring back everyone. Captain Wilcox will have my hide, sir, if I come back without you."
* D'arz sighs. Having the Marine Corps contingent on board was handy, but they sometimes had a habit of being a bit rigid and inflexible. A grin crosses his face as he realizes that Wilcox probably thought the same thing about Fleet personnel. *
"Tell the Captain I appreciate his concern, but I have some finishing up to do here before I go."
"Well, I don't believe I can do that, sir. Because we're not leaving unless you come with us."
* The half-Andorian shakes his head. Humans! *
"Very well, Hughes. Find a quiet corner until this is resolved. Rasczak!"
"Yes, sir!"
* D'arz turns to his Security Chief. *
"I want you to accompany Doctor Smith and the wounded back to the Independence."
"Request permission to stay, sir."
* The Captain shakes his head. *
"Unnecessary, Ensign. I have three members of the Starfleet Marine Corps-"
* The crowd gasps as Dolar slashes his way through Kala's defenses, opening a wound on her shoulder. Both Darosians are near exhaustion, black blood oozing from the nicks and cuts received during the fight. Dolar howls in triumph as the smaller Darosian slumps to the ground. *
"Look upon your executioner, Betrayer! Now you will die, and I will rule!"
* He raises his sword high over his head and begins to bring it down, when Kala kicks out his legs from under him, toppling the larger Darosian. She thrusts her sword up at him at the same time, impaling him on the long steel blade. Dolar's own weight drives the sword though his midsection, and he collapses on top of the Darosian freedom fighter, grunting once before expiring. The room is deathly silent. Kala rolls Dolar's considerable girth off of her, and she looks at him in disgust. *
"I told you, you talk too much, fat one."
* Covered in Dolar's blood, she rises somewhat unsteadily to her feet, using Dolar's sword for assistance. She approaches the remaining Sentinels, who look unsure of what to do. Brushing her matted hair from her face, she addresses them, leaning heavily on the sword. *
"Are there any other challengers?"
* They look at one another, until one young Sentinel drops to his knee, sword raised high. *
"My life for you, Kala! I swear my allegiance!
* Another cries out. *
"As do I, Kala Sharah!"
* One by one the assembled Sentinels pledge their loyalty to the former Rebel leader. Another voice cries out, louder than the rest. *
"In accordance with our laws, formal challenge has been issued and concluded justly. I declare Minister Kala Sharah the new First Minster of Daros."
* All heads turn to see Councilor Tepelle, Second Minister of Daros, blood streaming from a gash in his forehead and a large grin on his ashen face. He drops to one knee, and all the Darosians follow suit, as do the Federation personnel. Rasczak leans over to the Captain, his voice low. *
"Do I still have to go back to the ship, sir?"
* D'arz turns slowly to look at the Ensign, who has a look of complete innocence on his face that the Captain doesn't buy for one moment. *
"I believe that will no longer be necessary, Mister Rasczak."
* The two men grin as they watch the new ruler of Daros ascend the dais. *
********
* On the bridge of the Independence, Parker sits back in the command chair with a sigh of relief. *
=/\= “D'arz to Independence.” =/\=
”Good to hear from you, Captain. How are Xellos and Wesson?”
=/\= I believe Mr. Smith has stabilized them, can you transport through the field yet?” =/\=* Parker looks across to Alexy, and she nods. *
”Yes sir. Did you want to beam up now?”
=/\= “Not yet. Why don't you get down here, Parker? You might be missing a historic occasion.” =/\=
” I will be down there ASAP, Lewis out .”
* Parker leaped up from his chair and headed towards the turbo lift. *'Lt. T'lara you have the conn.......'
********
* Rasczak turned to the Captain, a smile on his face. *
Rasczak: Well sir, I’m glad things worked out for the best and I think that Kala is going to make a fine first minister. At last the Darosians will have a chance to help themselves.
D'arz: Agreed lieutenant. Proceed back to the ship with the wounded. I have a few things to take care of here.
* With that said, he walked over to Kala *
D'arz: I hope that your lives will be easier now. The Independence is standing by to render any medical aid that may be required. I would be honored if you would join me for a celebratory dinner on board.
Kala: Captain, I cannot thank you enough for all you have done here to help us. The casualties will be ready to beam up when you’re ready - as for dinner, I’m afraid I will have to refuse. There is much to be done here - this is a very exciting time for us.
* D'arz simply nodded, smiled and shook her hand: he understood completely. This was a new nation under a new leader, she needed to ‘feel the reins’ for a while. *
D'arz: “Do you mind if I look around? The architecture here is quite breathtaking.
Kala: Not at all, Captain. Help yourself!!
********
* Epilogue *
* The Captain relaxes in his Ready Room, the collar of his dress whites loosened. A very old bottle of Aldebaran whiskey sits on the desk, along with a half-empty glass. He picks up the glass, watching the jade liquid through the sparkling crystal. As he sips his drink, he thinks about Kala Sharah and the 'KaVara' - the 'Lightbringers'. They certainly had their work cut out for them, but he felt in the pit of his stomachs that they were going to make it. Or perhaps it was the whiskey. Either way, he planned to arrange for the Independence to patrol the sector from time to time. The ceremonies installing Kala as First Minister were short and sweet, with hardly any celebration. Darosian practicality, he thinks. Kala herself had barely a moment to thank them for their help before she was whisked away, off to fulfill her duties as the new head of state. A formidable young woman, with formidable challenges ahead. Under her leadership, one day soon they will be ready to join the Federation, he muses. *
* The doorchime interrupts his thoughts. *
"Come."
* The door opens to admit First Officer Lewis, who takes a step in and hesitates, seeing the bottle perched on the oak desk. *
"I'm sorry, sir. I can come back later, if you wish."
* The Captain shakes his head, gesturing for the young human to enter. Mister Lewis takes a seat across from the half-Andorian, and D'arz reaches into a drawer, extracting another glass. He raises an eyebrow in question, and the XO nods. Pouring his second-in-command a drink, he sits back in the tall leather seat behind his desk, and looks over his glass at the younger man. *
"Mister Lewis, do you see this desk?"
* The XO nodded, curious. *
"This desk belonged to my friend and predecessor, Captain John Bell Hood. The finest officer I have ever had the distinction of serving with."
* Lewis is silent, sipping his drink as he listens. *
"He left me this desk, as a sign of our friendship, but also to remind me that I was the one in charge here now. There were a few times I doubted that I belonged behind it. This chair, and the one outside in the center of that room, are very large and difficult to fill at times."
* He sips his whiskey, letting the smoky liquid sit on his tongue a moment before swallowing, savoring it. *
"But it is times like this, when I feel we actually made a difference, that I feel quite comfortable in it."
* He raises his glass to the XO. *
"Thank you, Mister Lewis. A job well done by all involved."
* Lewis raises his glass to the Captain. *
"Thank you, sir. And I would like to say I feel comfortable with you in that seat as well, sir."
* Both men grin, taking a large sip of the whiskey. Lewis lets out a small cough, his only concession to the liquid burning its way down his throat. The Captain smiles, picking up the bottle and refilling their glasses. *
"Did I mention that Captain Hood gave me the bottle as well?"
* Lewis shakes his head, still a little flushed, grinning. *
"He must have really been something, sir."
"He was at that. There was this time we were outbound for Golanus X....."
* The two officers sit together deep into the night, and exchange tales of duty, friendship and honor. Feeling the satisfaction of a job well done, but never really finished - there would always be more challenges ahead. *
