Zaharako's
Until 1900, there was no soda fountain type business in Columbus. Zaharako's was the first, and remains a one-of-a-kind soda fountain from a time far from the present. Stepping inside the doors is taking a trip back to another time. I salute Ann, Lew, and Ted Zaharako for keeping it going after all these years, and more importantly, NOT changing the place. Columbus residents from different generations can bask in the nostalgia of their own memories once they enter its doors. Sit at the counter and have a soda drink made the old fashioned way (syrup is mixed with soda water), or a hand dipped milkshake, or one of their famous "cheeseburgers" (more like a toasted sloppy joe with cheese). Besides the food and drink offerings, Zaharako's is truly a visual treat for the eyes.
I worked at Zaharako's my freshman year of high school. You can read more about Zaharako's by clicking here: Zaharakos. Needless to say, a trip to Columbus is not complete without a visit to this wonderful place. And if you happen onto Columbus during the Christmas season, Zaharako's decorations are an awe-inspiring site. Zaharako's is less than a block away from the Courthouse, going north on Washington Street.
