Entombment

The Entombment depicts Jesus Christ being entombed by a priest surrounded by his entourage of holy supporters and believers of the lord and savior, Jesus Christ. The hand extending above the head of Jesus is more than likely one of the priest giving Christ his last rights. Two men are holding Christ and three or four others are watching him be buried. One woman in the back has her hands over her head to show a motioning towards God up in Heaven in order to give him a sign that it is time to allow his son into the pearly gates. The painting is very dark and black and has most of its attention towards the left side of the painting which is asymmetrical. Both of these traits are, of course, showing qualities of the mannerist period in artwork. Next Picture
