The Inspiration of St. Matthew is mainly about Lezi, the tax collector, who is busy working on his papers which are probably the taxes of the people of his native country. One of the angels has been sent from Heaven to coem down and inspire him to become an evangelist and have the spirit of Christ in his heart to give him belief in God and the Lord Jesus. This painting is very showing of the artist Caravaggio as it is nearly all red and black. Those two colors are almost always the largest-seen in his works because they show darkness.
