
began
his training as a performer at the age of five, studying piano
with his church organist. He continued his lessons for over four years.
He studied with teachers in both Hamilton and Kitchener, and performed in
many recitals. However, at the age of eleven he discovered the trumpet
and began private instruction two years later. Matt has also been
studying voice since 1999.
In September of 1995, Matt
entered the Music program at Wilfrid Laurier University. He
studied trumpet intensively with international trumpet sensation Guy
Few and also received instruction in theory and improvisation. He
also studied Psychology and Music Therapy, and received his
Honours Bachelor of Music Therapy, with distinction, in June of 1999.
Matt has been teaching
privately since high school and is currently the Brass Instructor at the
Waterloo Music Academy. In addition to one-on-one lessons, Matt has also
coached various groups ranging from brass quintets to large ensembles.
Highlights of his performance
career include the Drayton Festival Theatre’s annual Alan
Lund Memorial Benefit Concert in both 1998 and 1999; the Sanderson
Centre with the Wilfrid Laurier University Baroque Opera; the Centre
in the Square with the WLU Orchestra; performing with the Quinte
Brass in April of 2000; and of course recording his first album, Travel,
a collection of "classical" music from various countries such
as Spain, England, Russia and the United States.
Matt has also been a member
of the Windjammers for many years and has performed in numerous
concerts, sometimes as a soloist. He played on their first album, Swingphonic
(released in the fall of 2000) and also on Karen K. Edissi’s, Broadway
Baby which features the Windjammers.
Matt is also working
regularly as a producer. He produced the soundtrack for the film The
Nature of Reality and Karen K. Edissi’s, Broadway Baby.
He was also co-executive producer for Windjammers’ Swingphonic.
His most recent project was a
solo piano recording with Tokyo's Yumi Takagi.
