UPDATE (January 9, 2008)
This is a 15-song collection of previously unreleased 'fields of gaffney' 4-track recordings; Nov. 2002 to Nov.2003 Featuring "All Alone Again" (MP3)"Crisis," "Precious,"
NOTES ON RECORDING 'BRILLIANT CONCERT NUMBERS'; The majority of instrumentation/vocals were recorded direct to older Tascam Porta Two 4-track with the meters, or with one Shure SM-58, and all mixed directly onto dat tape in one 24 hour period last Spring. All of the album's instruments were played solo and mostly one at a time, including, but not limited to; '73 Gibson L6-S, and SG, Mexican Fender Strat, '74 Fender P-Bass, "Made-in-Japan" drum kit with Zildjian/Paiste cymbals, Plastic Organ, marimba, upright piano, Xylophone, MXR pedals, + Bermuda maracas. The first twelve were recorded 1994-'98, and but three previous to 1993. This CD is partly a result of "Lights Up and Spins Around" Cassette, of which 100 were distributed. "Hudson River Landing" and "Invisible Hands" are songs salvaged from mixes selected from an unreleased fourteen song record, at Funhouse studio on 4th Street in New York, June-July, '96. This was an 8-track studio; the drums I used were Bob Bert's, a Fender Bassman, and an amp Patti Smith left there. I put notes on tape over the bass neck. Both are with acoustic and electric guitar, and the latter, an older tune I thought to record after finding 'Hank Snow Sings Sacred Songs' on vinyl at the Mountain Farms Mall flea Market. "The Other Day" and "Dead Piano Place" were all partly recorded in a basement summer '98, and later completed with overdubs upstairs, including an upright piano. The first of these, with the backing track sped up some, first appeared on a CD Compilation with COOL BEANS 'zine in San Francisco. "1983" was written for GREY MATTER, in that year, and performed at various hall shows, and was later recorded in 1994-95 with a broken hi-hat stand in the former Pro-Bush factory building, as was "All Sides", completed four years later, and "Moonlight," one of the five instrumentals here, and featuring the Gibson L6-S and SG Guitars. "Xylophone," was a metal xylophone multi-tracked with an added found sound of LP on 16rpm, and edited with a layered broken plastic organ that held notes when plugged in, backwards bells and guitar, marimba. This was from 1989 as was "Reverb Subway Train," utilizing a Reverb box machine. The other non-originals, "Rebel Waltz," and "No Expectations," were recorded at a house in the summer of '93, between Sebadoh tours, with acoustic, voice, percussion, UKELIN, and wood train whistle. * "Wanna Be With You/Long Journey" split 7" with Pernath, Morc Records, Hilversum, Holland. Limited edition 'Import' of 250. $6.00 ppd. (U.S.) a picture of the single's sleeve art-Ordering this 45 rpm from outside U.S./Canada? Eric Gaffney falls into the latter category... The album starts off with chiming guitars on "All Alone Again." A pleasant melody is paired with dark lyrics, "All Alone Again, on my own again, I am hard to take, so leave me be."... One of the new songs that really shines is the song "Losers in the Living Room." It is an anthem about hating your roommates. It matches the greatness of anything from Bubble and Scrape. This collection of songs will please old school fans and new comers alike. I love the hand made quality of CD-Rs. The art work features wonderful xeroxography, but an artist such as Gaffney really deserves a proper release. The only thing that is missing from this disc is Gaffney's great sound pieces. I look forward to hearing them on future releases."
Hey Eric, You probably think I'm the biggest douche ever, 'cause I keep saying I'm going to write about your record and then I never do. But check it out: it's sitting on my desk right here, and I really am going to review it just as soon as I can. Sorry I keep pushing it back. The saddest thing is that I like yr record so much better than all the shit I have to write about in front of it. You know, deadlines for Staind, Scott Stapp, Disturbed - oy! So I promise I'm going to get to it soon. In the meantime know that I particularly dig "Yours is the music for No Instrument" and "Drifts on Thru." Are you using the same guitar/amp setup as back in the day? It sounds so much like all that old stuff, but also somehow new. -Johnny Loftus, ALL MUSIC GUIDE HAMSTER GUEST PAGE Amanda "Heiress to the Waffle House Throne" Douberly

Cosmic Chicken & Egg on College Radio; In the Top Ten at number six!, Week of 9/26/05 WNYU, New York played on Breakfast of Champions show, WMBR, Cambridge, MA. KUCI UC Irvine KXLU Reviews of Nature Walk"Eric Gaffney. Remember that guy? He helped start THE prototypical indie rock band, Sebadoh... Fast-forward to now, and we are given Gaffney’s latest effort, Fields of Gaffney’s Nature Walk . He’s most recently relocated to San Fran and set up shop, all the while dodging record deals, and accumulating more indie-rock cred then any one human has ever been able to amass." "A couple songs to note are “Wanna Be With You, which has a Ramones/Sex Pistols “Submission" feel to it. And there’s my hit-single favorite, “Accelerated, which sounds like good 60s psych. Not that hippy-dippy, bad country music crap. This totally goes against my indie-rock, lo-fi premise, but if I could have a Marvel What-If Moment, it would be to hear “Accelerated" with Gaffney on vocals and backed by some heavy band with a Kyuss sound, lashing out some monster guitar riffs. Probably not a good idea in the end, because it more than likely would make all other songs ever created obsolete and implode the universe." "Overall, the songs on Nature Walk are a bit calmer and more thought out than most that were set forth earlier in Gaffney’s career. Perhaps having his own band is what he needed to be able to sit down and craft music in his own likeness. So I say, “Hey, Mr. Big Label jerk-ass, you can keep your musical offerings by Mr. Malkmus, Mr. Pollard, and Mr. Barlow, and just gimmie Gaffney rock!? --Frank Bridges, Delusions of Adequacy "Weirder and more wonderful, a luminous starburst of fuzzy, distorted guitars, tremulous harmonies and frantic punk rock energy." -Splendid "The album opens with "Push It Up To Me," which has this Marvin Gaye feel to it that I can't quite explain. It's catchy and I feel like I should be walking in slow motion through a bowling alley in 1975 or something. I love the phased guitars, and I love the female backing vocals on the "You can do anything, do anything that you want" chorus. It's always ballsy to open an album with a cover track, if you ask me. This album showcases Gaffney's abilities as a songwriter. It's a sign that he's back and as good as ever... Fields of Gaffney will become a household name in the years to come." -Foxy Digitalis All Music Guide (AMG) Nature Walk review AMG review "An instantly personal statement, suggesting Gaffney's work with Sebadoh at every turn, but also renewing and refining his odd genius...an affable stroll back into listeners' lives by a guy who never should have left." -Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide "Gaffney's latest material is more tuneful than some of his old Sebadoh stuff, yet plenty abraded by shambolic fuzz and psychedelic weirdness. A welcome comeback for an oddball savant." -Michael Alan Goldberg, Seattle Stranger "A few of the songs here have a more psychedelic bent... but for the most part, the songs are relatively straightforward and very enjoyable." -Indiepages.com "Eric Gaffney made his name in the 90s by helping to form Sebadoh , perhaps the archetypal indie rock band. He was most notable for his sense of experimentalism, and his songs were generally energetic, loud blasts of noisy experimentation. The songs on " Nature Walk " echo Gaffney's variable musical leanings, ranging from conventional rockers ( Broke Up ), to fuzzy pop ( Gates of Steel ), to ethereal mood pieces." ( Cold Weather ) -Cianan Delahunty, Halo 17 "What Nature Walk does have going for it is the return of a real voice of good old indie rock. Eric Gaffney was and is a full-on 4-tracking, pedal-stomping, pot-infused proponent of the grunge-folk mixture that made Sebadoh 3 one of the most amazing albums ever. As if stepping out of a cave of ice, Eric carries on from that record, almost completely bypassing the few Sebadoh albums after 3 that he worked on, focusing on the pop sensibility rather than the lysergic vision." -Grant, Indie Workshop.com "Trippy, eccentrically psychotropic music ... There's nothing like down jackets and heavy wool sweater to get the love light burning." -Splendid's Top Winter Songs, December 2003 "You may remember Eric Gaffney as Sebadoh's co-founder. He's got another group, a trio called Fields of Gaffney, which is tuneful and psychedelic." -Jim Sullivan, Boston Globe Fields of...on Norwegian website Musikkgurden Top 20, KZSU Stanford, September 2004 Top 10, WNYU New York, January 2004 Top 20, KDVS Davis, January 2004 Top 20, WMBR Cambridge, August 2003 Reviews of Brilliant Concert Numbers“Primitive, haunting and strange as a three-legged duck?-Joe S. FIELDS OF GAFFNEY, October, 2002
Music Bio (*n progress, under construction) Here's a bit about how I got started playing music; PREFACE; 1st DRUM SET; 1973 red sparkle muppet-style 3-piece (no floor tom)w. one cymbal that i have to this day and sounds trashy and good, short decay. I broke the pedal in '76, wrote my first lyrics, and started playing drums with earphones to LP records around '79 when I got a silver sparkle-70's Slingerland snare as a present from my dad. my set up era 1980; brass timbales on precarious cowbell stand, old broken kick drum as a floor tom, chinese woodblocks, 60's zildjians, ludwig hi-hat stand... w. christmas lights on it. 1st SHOW: I was first listed on a bill in May, 1978 as part of the Asparagus Valley Music Ensemble... (a family affair) I sat in the audience instead... there was a John Cage piece w. radios in the set that night. 1st acoustic Christmas '79...by 1980 i had gradually tuned the strings so high i broke the bridge off and tried to glue it back down. 1st ELECTRIC; 1981. Sears 60's no-name sunburst, cool shape/cutaway, played terribly. $50 off the wall at Tepper's in N'ton (now Pleasant St. Video)I accumulated lots of stickers on it. Now in the Mill River, Florence, MA. 1st amp also acquired in 1981; 1959 Sears Silvertone No. 1432, (Chicago blues amp) 1st PERFORMANCE; July 16, 1983 at the'Guiding Star' Grange Hall,Greenfield, MA. with Adrenalin O.D. from NJ. (find their "Suburbia" single-ep..massive guitar sound) + local W.Mass hardcore bands...w. GREY MATTER, (Daniel Hartling, Andy Darby, Dan Ryan, + me) a unique band I started a year previous that started as thrash and slowed down and became melodic and interesting over the course of five months. I played drums and wrote most of the lyrics. Before our second show, in September, 1983, opening for THE BIG BOYS (Austin, TX.) we acquired a girl bass player (Lisa Fusco) and started to sound alot better, but played less than 10 more shows and it was over. Last show was w. Jerry's Kids who used Lisa, our bass player's amp and Rick blew the speaker and our Lisa quit after that. We had a tape out which is when i started selling my tapes + zine at Main Street Records. We also recorded 5 songs in a Northampton, MA. studio Nov, 1983, but it was never officially released. (it was on "Welcome to 1984" cassette tape) opened for The F.U.'s, Jerry's Kids, Chronic Disorder, Outpatients, Adrenalin O.D. Big Boys, Raw Power…. ZINE; I had a 50-cent fanzine, WITHDRAWAL, 3 issues, from '83-84, with interviews, drawings, news clippings, letters. I got letters from all over the place including one from "Donny The Punk." MAXIMUM ROCK N ROLL I also wrote a few (3) Western Mass. scene reports w. photos, for Maximum Rock and Roll 1983-85. I played drums in lots of other bands through the 80's, one of which was B.I.U.,(with Tom Chasteen (now a Hip Hop producer) and John Kimbrough, who years later started Walt Mink.) I first played guitar onstage at a local hardcore band day show, Easthampton, Mass., Summer, 1984 with CATHARSIS. Then in 1986; "The Gracefully Aging Hippy Soloists" a duo, electric guitar and drums, with the late Charles Ondras (of Boss Hog), high school friend and neighbor. I put out a 90-minute tape, all live recordings. I sang and played a G&L and SG along with an early 80's Moog synth that generated messed-up noize most of the time, and a cheap mic, all plugged into a Fender Champ which we had to plugged into the barn ceiling light fixture. SEBADOH; In Jan 1987, I began practicing for local shows I booked at Hampshire and Smith College, for "Sentridoh," which was Lou and his songs and ukelele and me on various percussion. Summer 1987, cross country Greyhound bus ride, then to WDC/Arlington, VA. for a month, lived and practiced with GOBBLEHOOF w. Tim Aaron, Jens Jurgeson, 'Doug' our singer, and then re-formed in Northampton with J Mascis on drums, Jan. 1988. I ended up playing bass and singing and we played 2 shows at Hampshire College after which I focused on 4-track recordings that would become "The Freed Man" original 30-minute cassette. SEBADOH INCARNATION mixed, then assembled "The Freed Man" cassette (30 min. Radio Shack lo-noise tape) the following summer which was a collaborative effort with songs we were writing on 4-track. I duplicated these at home, and sold them at Main Street Records in Northampton, MA. for $1.00 each in a box covered with Dr. Seuss artwork. We sent a tape to Sonic Youth, Gerard Cosloy, who favorably reviewed it in Conflict and signed us to a 3-record deal Homestead in Feb. 1989. first record was on Sonic Life, split-single with Big Stick, then Freed Man LP, Sept, 1989, then the Magic Ribbons (Leopard Gecko) box set, red vinyl, followed by the Vertical single-EP... Jason joined in 1989. Recorded Sebadoh III March, 1991. In '92 signed with Sub Pop, Domino, and City Slang in 1992, put out EP's and records, toured 91..92..93...including shows with Firehose in '91, UK dates and a European tour w. The Wedding Present through spring '92, Pavement/Sonic Youth '92, and Glastonbury, England and 2 U.S. tours inc. Lollapalooza '93 I left a few months before 'Bakesale' and then Kurt Cobain died." After which, I bought a 4-track and instruments, played solo shows in the northeast (NY and MA)recorded, bought a 4-track and guitars, nearly signed to Sub Pop, Atlantic, and Domino but didn't. Instead I ended up putting out my music myself, eventually. I started "Fields of Gaffney" Summer, 1998 in Northampton, with Jeff Halpin on drums, and Robyn (Janice) on guitar after I had released "Lights Up & Spins Around," a cassette of new material, Summer, 1998. We played CMJ at Coney Island High (now defunct) 2 shows w. Royal Trux, a show w. Buffalo Tom, one with Major Stars, Danielson Family...and a few more shows. In September, 1999, ten years to the date of Freed Man LP release, Atlanta-based label Old Gold released "Brilliant Concert Numbers", a collection of solo 4-track and studio recordings spanning the 90's. Favorable reviews in Alternative Press and Magnet, among others top 20 lists on college radio (including KAOS, Olympia and WMBR, Cambridge) January, 2000, Sub Pop's first release was a 'Singles Club' limited 7" featuring "Cold Weather" and "Twilight," recorded at Slaughterhouse (where 1/2 of Smash yr Head and 1/2 of Bubble & Scrape was recorded) San Francisco in 2000; re-started the group in January, 2002 with Richard Marshall (played guitar in Alice Donut) on bass and a cast of rotating drummers (Brendan from New Zealand's Subliminals, Flying Nun) new line up began in July, 2002, with Richard switching to drums + Jessica Cowley (Pillows, Run For Cover Lovers) joined us on bass guitar and vocal accompaniment. March, 2003, we played Noise Pop at Cafe Du Nord, S.F., then released "Nature Walk" CD to coincide with a performance at SXSW and tour of Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and California. Two Northwest tours followed, including stops in Eureka, Eugene, Portland, Olympia, Seattle, and Arcata. FIELDS OF GAFFNEY 1998-2010 2008-2010 (east coast) w.
