February 2, 2003- Groundhog's Day
The groundhog is one superstition that all people subscribe to,
regardless of their strict religousity which prohibits such systems.
Even people who are atheists and have no belief in anything mystical
will ask, "Did the groundhog see his shadow today?....Oh he did, man,
that means six more weeks of winter!"
The question I have is, "How does the groundhog know to come to the surface exactly on Febrary 2nd?"
Today after church, I started to write a song. I was sitting in the front and was just about to pack up my guitar when this idea for a chord progression just came under my fingers. People began to visit all around me. I was in a little bubble of thought, oblivious to them all. The building was almost empty when I went behind the piano and finalzed the progression. It had all my elements: folky, weird, and driving.
When I got home, I went into the music room, sat on the couch
and started to sing two stanzas I made up last winter. The stanzas
went like this:
Driving to the Gulf of Mexico
Will the car make it,
I don't know
But I'm glad I have you
At my side
We're driving to the Gulf of Mexico
Will we see sharks,
I don't know
I forget which part of Florida
They reside
The song was fleshed out from there and it became a lyric celebrating spontaneous road trips. "sleeping bags and diners all the way!"
I have a little dream that someday soon, I can make a good recording of it and take video of a trip to the Gulf and then marry the two in a DVD or something.
