Orgins of Bottle Rocket Sept. 8 2003
Wow, what a wild saturday!(more later) As you may have seen on my gigs page, I'm tooling around with a band called "bottle rocket" this fall.
Who's in Bottle Rocket?
Troy Yeager-main song writer, lead vocalist, rhythm guitar
Tom Adamson-lead guitar
Tim -? lead guitar II. Don't laugh, I don't know Tim's last name, nor do I know
how much of a member he is. He's a senior in high school and is pretty busy, but
a fun guy and very talented.
(There's talk that Jason Monroe will be joining us in the fall on drums, which means
we need a bass slot too..)
Where did you get started?
In Valparaiso, Indiana. Troy moved from central Indiana to central Michigan
2 years ago then to Valpo this July. His day job is a booking agent for the Water Into Wine Agency.
I started to play guitar with him and Tim in August since Our debut was an open mic slot a week and a half ago
at Front Porch music in Valpo.
How did you pick your name?
Troy always wanted to play in a band named after his favorite movie- Bottle Rocket,
directed by Wes Anderson and co-writen with Owen Wilson. It's hilarious film. First in
the series of Rushmore and the Royal Tennenbaums. (I wrote about that on my Feb 26 entry.)
Bottle Rocket is full of quotable dialog and beautiful scenes. We've found that a lot of
people make the connection, which makes us smile.
What happened on your "wild saturday?"
We went to the pop corn festival in Valpo and played for change on the street. We made some nice
aquintences and $10 before the security guy told us we couldn't perform without a permit. So we left
to find Peter's church's booth. They let us play in front of their stand as long as we tried to
shout out things for their taco sales. We got through about three songs when three ladies in their late
20s to 30s approached us and asked how much money we had made. They said if we came and played at their
friends private party down the street we'd make a lot more money, she was right. We were led down
an alley way into the back of a storefron type builing. The room looks like a very chic bar-black walls,
big tvs, silver candles fun chairs. We play some of our covers like "Desire", "Creep", "the Scientist",
and the people sing along as much as they could at the top of their lungs and they are dropping 5s and 10s into
the guitar case. It made out head spin. We left there with days total at $88. It turns out that the
lady who asked us to play used to be a singer/dancer at Amusement parks and thought we had guts to
play for change. She was real friendly and encouraging. It made me feel like this Bottle Rocket "tour"
that Troy is putting together will be a success. I hope it will.
