Hello, my Name is Darnell Stephen Summers and I’m a member of the VVAW-AI(Viet Nam Veterans against the War-Anti Imperialist) & the STWB(Stop the War Brigade).
Over
the past few days an
Anti-War/Peace coalition has been demonstrating outside the US Army
Headquarters at Campbell Barracks here in Heidelberg. During that time we have had an opportunity
to talk with some of the soldiers. Specifically the soldiers who were ordered
to watch us and protect the facility. At first many of them were hostile
mainly towards our german colleagues but after a while
the soldiers came forward to the barricades and engaged in some lively debate. Most of them expressed the official position of the US
Government that had been forced on them. They quite frankly sounded like CNN.
As time passed some of the positions softened and you could see the doubt in their faces. There were a few soldiers who expressed from the beginning either in words or gestures their opposition to the war. The debate over what this war is all about is most definitely waging in the barracks just as it did when I was a soldier.
I have a trained eye in this work with G.I.’s. Some of the soldiers were just waiting for the order to shoot at the demonstrators and anyone who opposes them. They were wound up like toy soldiers and you just had to point them in the right direction and let them go. There was one soldier who kept his trigger- finger dangerously close to the trigger in sharp contrast to the other soldiers who just let their weapons hang lazily to their sides. I was somewhat surprised to see so many soldiers with loaded weapons behind such a small group of mostly young people with we older folks spread in between. It made me angry. It reminded me of My Lai, Kent state , Wounded Knee and all the places where the US had gunned people down. All this right here in Heidelberg right under our noses.
The Protectors of Freedom have cast their dark shadow on this small picturesque town and on the world in general . The mask has fallen from their face. Many of the demonstrators were frightened while facing these armed and dangerous youngsters. How long will it be before some innocent protestor is accidently shot by these protectors of freedom. There are so many aspects that we could discuss cconcerning these matters But I will keep my comments brief. Here’s a Little food for thought.
On the 13th of December 2002, PFC Clint Cotton Lamebear was brutally murdered by 2 white US Soldiers in Frankfurt. They beat him to death with a heavy wooden stick on some side street . Where were the people to help him? PFC Lamebear had only been in Germany four days, the last four days of his life. He was killed by two terrorists in US military uniforms. That is a fact. It is time for the Oppressive Yankee War Machine and all of its partners to be layed to rest and cast into the dustbin of History with the rest of the garbage. Our appeal on the Soldiers, simply put:
