SKIDMORE

SKIDMORE, JOSHUA. Born ca. 1740 (in New England, removed to Nova Scotia 1760+/-, died 1787-1797 in Kentucky according to various family histories. Joshua is first found in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. His wife was Catherine __, born Germany 1740-1750, died 1830 at age of 96, and whose parents died at sea. Following are the children of Joshua and Catherine Skidmore, however George Skidmore and Jennie Skidmore are NOT proven children of Joshua and Catherine, but are only probables at this point.

1. George Skidmore, Blacksmith, born October 01, 1772 (9) in Nova Scotia and died July 13, 1855 (9), at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 13 days, Franklin County, Ohio. George Skidmore was married to Isabella McGahee who was born May 01, 1784, died 1855+, and was one of two daughters of Andrew McGahee who was killed in the Vincennes, Indiana Territory in 1788-1790. George Skidmore and wife should be in the 1850 Census, but I have failed to find them thus far. The will of George Skidmore implies that he is a relative of John Skidmore, and thus a quite probable son of Joshua Skidmore. The children (10) of George Skidmore include: William, James M., Joshua, Andrew, George W., Martha Galliger, and Mary L. Say. The Will of George Skidmore makes mention of William M. Skidmore, one of the heirs of John Skidmore, deceased, and a Mary C. Anderson.
2. Joshua Skidmore, Farmer, born ca. 1776 in Pennsylvania, married Eleanor "Nelly" Hopper (Nelly 1792-1859), Aug. 30, 1810, Franklin County, Ohio, died 1860+ in Vermillion County, Indiana. [unconfirmed research of a Howard Skidmore, relayed to us states that Joshua and Nelly were married by James Marshall, a brother-in-law to Joshua. If this proves out, we've another sister to add to the family]
3. Mary Skidmore, born Aug. 10, 1779 in Pennsylvania, married John Rogers, August 30, 1810 in Franklin County, Ohio, died May 28, 1851 in Vermillion County, Indiana.
4. Hermina Skidmore, born January 01, 1779 in Pennsylvania, was married to Matthew Stokes, and died 1835 in Vermillion County, Indiana.
5. Jenny Skidmore, married January 09, 1800 in Ross County, Ohio, to Maches ___ (I can't read). no further record.
6. John Skidmore, Farmer, born August 27, 1783 in Pennsylvania, died December 07, 1863 in Vermillion County, Indiana, married first to Mary Hopper on May 26, 1807 in Franklin County, Ohio, and secondly to Jane Hopper, sister to Mary, on April 02, 1822, Franklin County, Ohio.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES

The History of Vermillion County (Indiana), Biographical Sketches, page 509.
JOHN SKIDMORE, deceased, was one of the first pioneers of Helt Township, Vermillion County, and during his life was an active and enterprising citizen. He was born in Pennsylvania, August 27, 1783, his father being of English descent, and a soldier during the Revolutionary War. His mother was a native of Germany, coming to America when five years of age. Her parents and the rest of her family died of cholera on shipboard while enroute to America. Our subject was taken to Kentucky by his parents in his boyhood, his father dying in that State. The family then removed to Columbus, Ohio, where the mother died at the advanced age of ninety-six years. Mr. Skidmore came to Indiana with a colony. they building a keel boat at Columbus in which they floated down the Scioto River to the Ohio River, thence to the mouth of the Wabash River, and from there to Vincennes, where they remained two years or untill the year 1818. In the fall of that year they came to Helt Township our subject having preceded them in the spring of 1818 and raised a crop. His house was the furthest north in the County, and no house was between his and old Fort Dearborn, now Chicago. Mr. Skidmore was first married May 26, 1807, to Mary Hopper, and of the six children born to this union are still living - Mrs Catherine Tweedy, Mrs Jane Ford, and Mrs Elizabeth Potter. His son William, who is now deceased, was the first white child born in Vermillion County. Mr. Skidmore married for his second wife Jane Hopper, a sister of his deceased wife, April 2, 1822. Of the seven children born to this marriage three are yet living - Mrs Mary Helt, John of Douglas County, Illinois, and Josiah. On coming to the county Mr. Skidmore entered 160 acres of land on section 22, Helt township, which he owned until his death. Here he kept a public house for forty years, which was the traveler's stopping place between Vincennes and Fort Wayne or from Chicago. He served as justice of the peace several years, and was quite a prominent man in the early history of the county. He died December 7, 1863 his widow surviving until April 2, 1870. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and consitent Christians.

The History of Vermillion County (Indiana), Biographical Sketches, page 378.
Josiah Skidmore biography tells basically the same data as found in his fathers biography above.

The History of Vermillion County (Indiana), Biographical Sketches, page 328.
Robert Ballentine Stokes, a worthy representative of one of the old pioneer families of Vermillion County, was born in Franklin County, Ohio, the date of his birth being September 15, 1810. He is the only surviving son of Matthew and Harminah Stokes, the father born June 27, 1774. Nathaniel Stokes, the grandfather of our subject, was a native of North Carolina, from which state he removed to Kentucky. Later he settled with his family at Columbia, near Cincinnati. In 1791 when St. Clair was defeated by Indians at Fort Recovery, Ohio, Matthew Stokes assisted in burying the dead slain by the Indians. He was married in Ohio to Harminah Skidmore, a descendant of a prominent Kentucky family. They had a family of nine children,... (a very long biography) .. Their daughter, Mrs Mary Skidmore Winsett, of Edgar County, Illinois,...,and Robert B. Stokes, the subject of this sketch are the only two survivors of this family at the present writing. (1883)....

The biographies of John O. Rogers and James S. Rogers, sons of John Rogers, born Ireland, to America in 1789, to Kentucky, to Chillicothe, Ohio, to Vermillion County, Indiana, "then a wild and uninhabited tract". etc..

Biographical History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, 1891, a lengthy biography for Samuel T. McFall states that he married in Mahaska Co, Iowa, March 18, 1866, to ISABELLE SKIDMORE, who was born Franklin Co, Ohio, daughter of JAMES M. SKIDMORE (also a native of Franklin Co, Ohio). Her grandfather was GEORGE SKIDMORE, a native of Kentucky, soldier in the War of 1812, and Captain in the Mexican War. James M. Skidmore married Eunice Hendricks (b. Ohio), daughter of James and Elizabeth Hendricks. James and Eunice Skidmore moved from Ohio to Mahaska Co, Iowa when Isabelle was 18 years old; at the time the bio was written, James and Eunice Skidmore were residing in Sheridan Co, Kansas. THEORIES

THEORY #1
Reference: Franklin County, South Columbus and Refugee Tract History. Colonel John McGown's June 16, 1814 Patent. Plus coverage of the entire Refugee Tract. Original owners were Cajuns from Canadian Accadian Nova Scotia. Ohio Genealogy Center, Columbus, Ohio. Copyright 1974 Fay Maxwell, Revised 1988.
Land Laws, page 2. 1796. Refugee tract for British subjects in Nova Scotia, Canada. Most were Scotch-Irish Protestants, some were French - all cajuns. Congress set aside 50,080 acres of land east of the Scioto river as site for homes for refugees.... These Scotch-Irish Nova Scotia Accadian Refugees joined the colonists army in exchange for land in Ohio.... Claimants must prove residency in Canada prior to July 4, 1776, had been forced to flee their homes there because of aid given to colonies during the Revolutionary War and had not returned to Canada to live prior to November 25, 1783.....Only half was claimed. Unclaimed land was sold at Chillicothe land office to highest bidder at $2.00 an acre.
Page 85. George Skidmore 84 acres, Section 13, 3rd rate land.
Page 87. ....Those who drew lots for land in Ohio's (Refugee) tract are partially listed in National Daughters of American Revolution, December 1969 Issue. Page 115. McGown's Patent shows that he was originally of Augusta County, Virginia, prior to removal to Nova Scotia.
The supplier of this data from Ohio G.S. emphasizes that these settlers, including the Skidmores were Nova Scotia Accadians.
The biography of John Skidmore in Vermillion County, Indiana states that his mother was born in Germany, and his father was of English "descent". He does not state his father Joshua Skidmore was born in England, however, .....

THEORY #2. A note from Frank Skidmore, Feb. 7, 1999, states that he believes our Joshua Skidmore was the one born 21 April 1749 at Ashford, Derbyshire, England, the son of a Joshua Skidmore, and migrated to Pennsylvania by 1770 when he married Catherine ____? Mr. Skidmore does dangle a few items of interest which we have thus far been unable to find in our research thus far. - "He took his family down the Ohio River soon after to Bourbon County, Kentucky, where he died by 1790 leaving a large family mostly minors. In the fall of 1799 a group of seven families (including the Marshalls, the Coolidges, and the Rices) and the widow Catherine Skidmore and her children unhappy with slavery in Kentucky went back up the Ohio in a pirogue* and thence up the Scioto River to a small settlement now Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, where they stayed for the winter. A Skidmore daughter married here on 9 January 1800."

*Pirogue - a cajun canoe, flat bottomed hull with a shallow draft - dcm.

THEORY #3. I'm not ready to buy either of the two theories. We need more information especially on the alleged Kentucky years and we need input from descendants of the other children of Joshua as to what they have uncovered in their searches.

--------, CATHERINE, born 1740-1750 in Germany, died 1830+ in Franklin County, Ohio at the age of 96. Married to JOSHUA SKIDMORE prior to 1772, probably in Pennsylvania. At the age of 5 years, while enroute to America, both of Catherine's parents died of cholera.

HOPPER, MARY, born October 17, 1786 in Virginia, died June 23, 1821 in Vermillion County, Indiana. Married to LT. JOHN SKIDMORE May 26, 1807 in Franklin County, Ohio. Re-buried at Helts Prairie Cemetery.

RALSTON

RALSTON, JAMES A. , born 1851 in Bono, Vermillion County, -Indiana to parents of Ohio birth. (un-named source says the A is for Ammerman) In 1910, he was a Carpenter in Dana, Indiana. A neighbor girl was ALICE FIDELLA SMITH, 1864-1938, and off-spring of this union was NEVA CELIA RALSTON, born March 19, 1885, died February 04, 1961 in Vigo County, Indiana, buried Crown Hill Cemetery, Marion County, Indiana. The proof of descent of Neva Ralston is found on her marriage application, death certificate, two old letters, personal admission of Neva Celia Ralston, Bible record, etc. This lineage has not been pursued, tho I should do more for my Grandmother.
