Vogt’s “Dual Rate Word Problems”

 

1. The fare for traveling in a NYC cab is $5.00 for the first mile and $2.50 for each additional mile (actually, researching this from the internet the exact cost is $2.50 to enter and 50¢ for each 1/5 of a mile – taken from http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml … but this turns out to be the prices as I have given them). How far can a person travel with $25 for cab fare?

 

2. A lease states the rent for a space is $300 for the first month and $80 for each subsequent week. How long can you stay on $1000?  {n.b. 1 year = 52 weeks, 1 month = 4 weeks}

 

3. You use a machine and are charged $1.25 for the first 30 minutes and $2 for each hour thereafter.

a) How long can you use the machine if you have $10?

b) What if you can purchase fractions of an hour at that cost? Give answer in hrs, min, & sec.

 

4. There is a sale in which you can get four boxes of an item (regularly $5 each) for $12 and then each additional box will cost $4. How many boxes will $80 buy?

 

5. For the first three visits a person receives eight coupons, and the person receives two coupons for each visit after those introductory sessions. Classes are held four times a week, and when a person has accumulated fifty coupons the get a diploma of completion. How long does it take to graduate?

6.)   Find the measure of each side of an equilateral triangle whose perimeter is 13.5”.

7.)  Algebraically, find the measure of each angle of an isosceles right triangle.

8.)  Algebraically, find the measure of each angle of an equilateral triangle.

9.)  If the non-congruent side of an isosceles triangle is 8’ and its perimeter is  48’ find its dimensions.
