Mr. Vogt’s “Word Problems”

3.  Mom takes a turbo train north travelling at 180 mph.  After she leaves you find her nitroglycerin (for her heart condition) so you charter a super-turbo train that travels at 330 mph.  If you leave twenty minutes after she departed (physically – not spiritually) then how long will it take to catch her (especially if she needs her medicine within 45 minutes)?

4.  The product of the first and the last of three consecutive integers is one more than the second integer squared.  What are the three integers?

5. The product of the first and the last of three consecutive integers is one less than the second integer squared.  What are the three integers?

6.  It takes one pump 30 hours to empty a pool.  A second pump can get the job done in 20 hours.  How long will it take to empty the pool if both pumps work together.

7.  Acme computer repair charges a $2 inspection fee and $10 per hour service fee.  Mace computers charges a $14 inspection fee and $6 per hour service fee.  Find the break (even) point and explain which is the better company to use.

8. The product of the first and second of three consecutive even numbers is four less than double the third.  Find the three integers.

9.  The product of the first and second of three consecutive even numbers is two less than five times the third.  Find the three integers.

10.  An inlet valve can fill a small pool in 15 hours, but an outlet valve can empty it in 6 hours.  How long does it take to empty the pool if both are left on?

11.  Fred made $8 by splitting $1200 into two investments – one earned 4% for the year, but the other lost 4%? How much was in each?

12.  Triple the second of three consecutive odd integers is equal to two times the third minus the first then increased by twenty-six.  Find the three integers.

13.  Triple the second of three consecutive odd integers is equal to two times the third minus the first then increased by twenty.  Find the three integers.

15.  Samuel and Samantha were 540 miles apart and, at the same time, drove straight toward each other.  Samantha drove non-stop on a dirt road while Sam drove on the freeway so he was able to go twice as fast as her.  If they meet in 4.5 hours, how fast was Samantha going?  How fast was Samuel traveling?

16.  Strike Out Lanes charges $4 for shoes and $1.50 per game while Spare-A-Dime Lanes charges just $2.50 per game (shoes are included in that price).  Find the break (even) point and explain which is the best buy if you are going to bowl all day.

17.  Bob rode his moped at full speed, from his home to his girlfriend’s, against a stiff 10 mph wind in 8 hours.  He rode back with the same wind doing the trip in 6 hours.  How fast can his moped go in still air?  How far apart do they live?
