FOR LOVE OR MONEY-2 09/09/03

Q. Yesterday’s show was full of surprises and an agonizing wait to see how things would unfold. You did say your prediction was only a guess, so I will not hold you responsible for believing it was Wade. Give me your opinion on the ending.
A. I am usually fairly positive about these shows, but I have to admit sitting in my lazyboy and watching this two-hour finale reminded me of going to the dentist; just when you think he is through with the drill, he takes out another gadget and begins a new lengthy procedure. I believe the dialog was heavily scripted, especially during Erin’s speech before announcing her final choice. No one begins a lengthy conversation by raising the person’s hopes only to end it informing him he is not the one chosen. Wade looked more relieved to get out of there than anything else. He seemed to be losing his cool waiting for Erin to end reminiscing about everything that happened the previous weeks, and finally get to the bottom line. He deserves recognition for his enduring patience, while hearing Erin’s recaps.
Q. Talk to me about Erin.
A. Erin remained a total mystery to me. Right up till the end, she is telling the men her only plan after the show is to visit her sister in Chicago, not a very romantic thing to say to someone whom she will choose to supposedly continue a romantic relationship with.
No mention is made of what her future plans with the man she chooses will be, nor does she include him in her plan to visit her sister. Perhaps I am wrong, but this does not sound like making romantic plans with the man she supposedly has feelings for. She is openly distrusting of Chad’s motives for being there up until the end, and does not even know what his feelings for her are. In my opinion, this goes beyond taking a leap of faith, this is more like jumping over a dark abyss while hoping there is something to hang from on the other side.
Perhaps I missed something, but after Erin made a statement to Chad she had voluntarily chosen to split the two million with him, she made a check out to him for only $500,000. It was still a nice gesture on her part.
Q. Talk to me about Chad.
A. Chad did surprise me by choosing Erin over the money, especially when his heavily scripted speech made it seem he was going to choose the money up till the very end. He is pretty cunning and kept telling Wade there was a twist, perhaps knowing there was something in store for him if he chose Erin. He could have simply taken another leap of faith, it is difficult to tell. The editors did not leave much for the viewers to see, when it came down to how the relationship between Erin and the men were developing. Up until the last minute, conversations were in monosyllable and incoherent, no one clearly saying what was on their mind. I hope Erin and Chad are able to communicate better with each other, outside the show. I am curious to see if their relationship will last, since, as far as I am concerned, they are starting over from scratch. Who knows, it may work out.
Q. I know you prefer reality TV shows like Bachelor. What don’t you like about this type of format?
A. The problem with these types of formats is they are based on lies and deception, instead of concentrating on the relationships evolving between the participants. The main emphasis, in my opinion, lies in who is able to continue the deception without letting the other person know their true feelings, or ulterior plans. No one clearly speaks their mind, nor do they have open discussions about where their relationship is heading, or their personal feelings and opinions about each other. If they do, it is edited out, therefore, the viewers spend the six or seven weeks in total darkness as to anyone’s true feelings or how the relationship is progressing. Each one has their own secret to keep from the other, and the common denominator is distrust, not a very healthy feeling to have in any relationship. This is why it is practically impossible to determine the outcome, the most anyone can do is guess, and people are usually wrong when they are guessing, including myself.
Q. One week till the Bachelor begins!
A. I am looking forward to seeing the premier of B-4. I had access to the photos of the bachelorettes, and was able to identify several I believe will not make it too far, and others which have the physical attributes I believe Bob is attracted to. Someone may look attractive on a photograph and not have the personality to go along with her physical attributes. I personally believe only a definite type of woman attracts Bob, both physically and personably. I feel I have already identified several he will be attracted to physically, but have to see how they interact with Bob in order to have a better opinion of their chances of staying the distance. It is definitely going to be an interesting series.
Q. Come on, A.T., be adventurous. Give me some insights.
A. Wendy, the show has not even begun and you are already asking for predictions? All right, I will humor you, but do not hold me to anything I say, remember I am only going by one photo of a complete stranger. For various reasons, I believe it is possible Karin, Julie, Le Ann, Brooke, Lindsay K., Lanah, Lindsay D., Mysty, Kristy, Jenny, Samentha and Leona will not make it all the way. I could change my mind about a couple of them, after I see them interacting with Bob. Don't push me to the wall if I am wrong, remember I am only crystal-balling. It is difficult enough determining what is going on by watching a highly edited TV show, doing it by looking at a single photo is like asking for a miracle.
