I've heard them say that when a pet dies, it's final wish is granted. And that wish that is granted is that it gets to forever lie at it's owners feet.

So though our pets may pass on, they are forever with us. Laying at our feet. Always there. Always with us.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
Do not stand at my grave and mourn.
I am the dew-flecked grass at dawn.
Where tranquil oceans meet the land
I am the footprints in the sand
To guide you through the weary day.
I am still here; I'll always stay.
When you wake up to morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die.

I Will Be There
Remember me when all is lost and all is grey
For I will be there to light your way
I will be there to guide you home
When your skies turn dark
And your life grows bleak
To brighten your way
For I will be there
To hold your hand
To wrap my arms around you
When all seems lost
And you cannot go on
I will be there
If only in spirit
For I am always there with you
And forever I will be
