JOHN COATES & ASSOCIATES K-9 SERVICES is owned and operated by John Coates and is centrally located in Wichita, Kansas. We provide training for dogs and handlers in law enforcement and security as well as companion dog training. We can also provide pre-trained dogs to agencies and selected individuals under some circumstances. We also provide all levels of obedience and personal protection training.
John Coates has been training dogs for more than 30 years and has been involved in training dogs for security, personal protection and law enforcement since 1970. John has served as a vocational instructor and program coordinator for a community college where he instructed students in courses on dog training, dog grooming, kennel management and business development. He also supervised the boarding kennel, grooming shop and training school operated by the students.
The Police Service Dog Courses offered by JOHN COATES & ASSOCIATES (Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced) correspond respectively to the DPO I, DPO II, and PSP training and certification standards utilized by the German Police.
Each level consists of tracking the suspect footstep by footstep, passive indication of evidence discovered, criminal apprehension, and handler defense as well as obedience and agility training. Handlers are also instructed in the legal aspects of deployment and use as well as basic care and emergency first aid for the police service dog.
All Patrol Dog Courses are 9 weeks in duration, Detector Dog Courses are 6 weeks duration.
Handlers may attend the course with a dog provided by his/her agency or a dog may be purchased from us.
Please contact us for further information.

We provide Security Patrol Dog Courses to private security companies and licensed or registered security officers to enhance their security programs. All dogs trained as Security Patrol Dogs must be carefully selected by qualified personnel in order to ensure that the appropriate type of dog is selceted for this training. The training for Security Patrol Dogs is quite similar to that of Police Service Dogs but there are some modifications made to their training.
Private security firms and/or individuals desiring training should contact us for an application at least 90 days before training is to begin.
PERSONAL PROTECTION DOGS
With steadily increasing crime, even in smaller communities, many people are looking for a safe, effective alternative to firearms. Simply stated, a dog trained for personal protection is a safe, friendly, loving part of any family, willing to lay down its life for any family member.
Most of the people intending to commit violent crimes are deterred simply by the presence of a well trained dog, eliminating most instances of crime before they occur. While most dogs exhibit a natural desire to protect their home and family, LEAD K-9 provides the skill and control necessary in situations when you and your family are at risk of violent crime. Not all dogs have the ability to be man-stoppers on command; and, we employ specific testing to determine if the dog possesses the necessary temperament, drive, and courage for protection training.
We can provide you with a fully trained personal protection dog or custom train a dog for your specific protection or security needs in mind. We will also train your dog for you providing that the dogs temperament profile meets the requirements for your specified needs. Many dogs do not possess the necessary temperament to do protection work. If you send your dog to our facility we will first evaluate it then suggest to you the level of training best suited for the dog and recommend the next step in the training process. We are here to help you attain the protection level you need but we will not accept any dog for training that does not meet the mental or physical demands of the program.
We uses the following definitions for our presonal protection.
LEVEL 1: These dogs are trained in basic obedience, area protection, and defense of the handler.
LEVEL 2: These dogs are trained in all of the above areas plus: area and building search (checking for the presence of intruders), suspect transporting and object guarding.
LEVEL 3: These are the custom trained dogs. These dogs are all trained to Level 2, then custom trained to need your specific needs.
Because of the time and attention required for protection training, we accept only a limited number of dogs for training. Please note, this is not Schutzhund training; rather, a practical approach to deterring violent crimes.
PRICING STRUCTURE
Because of the individual charastics of each dog and the needs of each client, we do not have a set training fee system in place. Please call us for a quote based on your specific needs.
