Long ago in India, a group of heretic Sages lost their way and refused to honor the gods, so Lord Shiva decided to visit them in their forest home and teach them the truth. The Sages didn't recognize him, so they assaulted him with violent curses. As these had no effect, they then released a ferocious tiger, but Shiva merely wrapped it around his waist like a sarong. They then brought forth a hideous snake, but Shiva draped it around his head like a necklace. The heretic Sages still didn't recognize him, so they sent a fierce dwarf demon armed with a club. Shiva felled the demon, then stepped on his back and began to dance. As he danced, he glowed with such dazzling splendour that the gods came down from heaven and worshipped him as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance. The heretic Sages finally recognized him and, with awe, fell on their knees before the dance. |
