Background

This is probably the most important part of the site, the part that must be read in order to really grasp Karelis and her people, so, read up!

In the beginning, a group of four omnipotents (one each of sky: Arliasa, sea: Ti, earth: Sudo, or fire: Canicmerik) came together and began to create a world. The world was very Terra-like in its vegetation and overall style of design, however, this world - called Karelis - had been created by four different forces and it showed. Each of the deities had taken a different type-area of the planet and created sentient creatures to live there. These areas along with the races created for them were dubbed Realms and each god or goddess reigned over their own.
After the creation was finished, civilization began, the mortals living and working hand in hand with their benign deities. Life was an utopia for hundreds of years, then something changed. Noone knew what it was or where it had come from, but dissent ran through the people like a wildfire, turning them against the Realms and all who were not possessed with whatever it was that had overcome them. They were as if of one mind and were extremely efficent in their destruction. The gods were astounded and with the remaining true people, fought back, not knowing what they were up against. It was a war that they were to lose and at the last minute, the deities were forced to withdraw or die.
In a final desperate attempt to rescue their creation, they again came together and created a place on the planet untouched by the 'disease' and transported the few remaining true people there. They created this small area (about the size of Colorado) so that it was completely closed off from the outer world - Sudo built impassable mountains and a substance unable to dig through, Ti created fierce currents and whirlpools, Arliasa surrounded the new land with treacherous wind currents and poison gasses, and Canicmerik wove an unpredictable network of magma tunnels in the ground. As a final thought and gift, each of the deities created a sentient species through which they could keep contact (however unfortunately slight) with their world. These species were the dragons, phoenixes, unicorns, and serpents. To insure ties to the humanoids, the species were affixed with a need to Ra'al, a need to be a lifelong (possibly longer), perfect companion to a soul chosen by the gods. In the first generations though, strange mutations were noticed. They were rare but significant, as they were the elite of their races and chose the elite of those standing to Ra'al. These peculiarities and their bonds were unanimously chosen to rule Karelis. An odd twist of nature, or a gift from the gods?
Thousands of years later, this smaller Karelis is finally getting back on its proverbial feet. Even though noone remembers, even through tale, what happened, there are small snippets of folklore and child's tales adding to the suspicion of the wary. It is an unnoticed fact that those wandering far into the wilderness either never return or, more often, are unable for natural reasons to leave. The barrier works both ways, the people cannot get out, but the disease cannot get in. The 'disease', called False Fire, is constantly trying to find a way in and complete the takeover. So far, it hasn't happened, but odd things are taking place: peculiar massacres and bizarre changes in personality of the very few . . a few signs that False Fire is succeeding. The outlook isn't completely hopeless though. Although the gods and goddesses may never return entirely, the Ra'alers and their chosen are an obvious assistance in the eminent war.
