Erik is much younger this time around, but still as capable as ever of ruling his kingdom from below ground. No this is not the AWL musical, but the one written by Lawrence Rosen and Paul Schierhorn. The Phantom is very intense at times and Christine is delightful to hear. This miniseries appeared on TV in 1990 and is a charming rendition of the familiar tale. The Phantom here is the son of the leaving manager of the opera house and lives under Dad’s protection until Carlotta and her husband take over the opera. Not rated, but suitable for all ages. Cheung DVD Cover The Phantom Lover Dir. Ronny Yu. Perf. Leslie Cheung and Jacqueline Wu. 1995. Mandarin and Cantonese, subtitled in Chinese and English. The Oriental version of the Phantom of the Opera shows a much darker version the audiences are used to, and roles are shifted and fused into a whole new story. Not rated. Not suitable for children. Julian Sands Video Cover Dario Argento’s Phantom of the Opera Dir. Dario Argento. Perf. Julian Sands, Asia Argento. A-Pix Entertainment, 1998. A film that answers the question ‘Would Christine have loved the Phantom and stayed with him if he were a normal-looking man?’ Disturbing imagery and a good performance by Sands as the Phantom come together to form a film that is not for the faint of heart.
