1975 Reprint Cover Le Fantôme de L’Opéra Paris: Le Livre de Porche Policier, 1975. A reprint of the novel in the original French text, this book would make a fine edition to any collection. Some differences from the American version are readily apparent, such as the inclusion of Leroux’s inscription, the table of contents is at the back of the book, and the novel itself is printed as a mystery novel. The cover has a black and white still from the Chaney movie, and also included are several lists of Leroux’s other works. Paperback, 498 pages.

1986 Reprint Cover The Phantom of the Opera New York: Warner Books, Inc. 1986. This reprint comes in the size most of us are familiar with in paperbacks. There is a short biography of Leroux at the beginning of the novel that also lists some of his other works. Paperback, 264 pages.

1987 Reprint Cover The Phantom of the Opera: The Original Novel New York: Perennial Library, Harper and Row Publishers.1987. This print of the novel is a handsome black covered paperback featuring the mask and rose of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom on the front, with the title done in the broken white and blue font from the show. Included at the end is a several page article on the Paris opera house. Paperback, 360 pages.

The introduction by Max Byrd takes a fresh look at Leroux, his novel, and Erik. The original American editor’s notes are included, and a brief film listing is in the back of the book. Paperback, 271 pages.

1988 Reprint Cover The Phantom of the Opera New Jersey: The Unicorn Publishing House. 1988. Beautifully illustrated version of the novel, featuring the Red Death on the cover. Artist Greg Hilderbrant did all the illustrations. Softback, containing color illustrations, 204 pages.

1988 Reprint Cover The Phantom of the Opera New York: Dorset Press. 1988. This hard bound reprint of the novel features on of the most unusual collections of extras. Being the 75th anniversary edition, it includes a forward by Peter Haining and two short articles speculating if Sherlock Holmes and the Phantom ever met in the appendix. This reprint is a true gem and worthy of any fans collection. Hardback, illustrated forward, 264 pages.

1990 Reprint Cover The Phantom of the Opera New York: Batam Classic. 1990. A new translation by Lowell Bair, and according to the back cover, the only complete American translation of Leroux’s novel. Paperback, 274 pages.

The complete novel is included in this reprint, along with the Peter Haining forward, and the appendix that goes with that forward, meaning two short articles on Erik and Sherlock Holmes. The cover features one of the Notre Dame gargoyles watching over the city of Paris. Hardback, 264 pages.

1994 Reprint Cover The Phantom of the Opera New York: Puffin Classics. 1994. This offering from the Essential Collection gives the reader a complete and unabridged reprint of the novel, which contains a short biography on Leroux and the publisher’s notes from the American edition of the novel from 1911. The cover illustration of Erik by David Bergen has an interesting golden sheen to it that lends a sense of warmth to the book. Paperback, 322 pages.
