This retelling of Leroux’s story gives deeper insight into Erik’s feelings and has a much happier fate in store for him. The book seems to be geared towards teen readers, and it would be a wonderful alternative to the regular novel for readers seeking something new. Paperback, photos from the movies, 145 pages.

1987 The Phantom of the Opera Green, Carl R. and Sanford, William R. New York; Crestwood House. This book follows the omitted story line of the Claude Rains film. Here, the Phantom turns out to be Christine’s father, who ran away long ago in a fit of musical madness. The story still works and a still from an omitted scene tantalizes the reader. Hardback, illustrated, 47 pages.

1988 The Phantom of the Operetta Christian, Mary Blount. New York; Troll Associates. When a mysterious ghost plagues the auditions of the town’s operetta, two kid sleuths vow to crack the mystery. But will they be ready for the Phantom when they find him? A good mystery for younger readers, this book focuses more on the mystery and less on the horror element of Leroux’s story. Paperback, illustrated, 53 pages.

1989 The Phantom of the Opera McMullan, Kate. New York, Random House. From the Step –Up Classic Chiller series, this rendition looks at Leroux’s novel through Erik’s eyes. There are plenty of illustrations by Paul Jennis and the large typeface should make this an enjoyable read for younger readers. Paperback, 96 pages.

1990 Babar: The Phantom Smith, J.D. New York, JellyBean Press. The world’s most beloved elephant meets the Phantom of the Opera in this heart warming story. Young ones will love the non-scary Phantom, and older readers will enjoy the story. Hardback, illustrated, 44 pages.
