NATIONAL CDA HISTORY

The College Democrats of America (CDA) was originally founded in 1932 to help the Presidential campaign of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. From the 1940's to the 1960's, CDA was the largest student political organization in the nation. However, when CDA broke ranks and opposed the war in Vietnam in 1967, President Johnson cut off the funding and the organization floundered nationally until the late 1980's. Inspired by the 1988 Presidential candidacy of then-Senator Al Gore, the organization was revitalized. With the Clinton/Gore ticket in 1992, CDA grew to nearly 500 chapters with more than 50,000 members across the country. Since the emergence of Speaker Newt Gingrich in January of 1994, the membership of the organization has increased by 45%. Today, CDA boasts over 1,000 chapters and more than 1,000,000 students nationwide. Our organization's primary focus is registering voters and electing Democrats. During the 1992 elections, as the leader in the Democratic Party's "Vote for a Change" Campaign, CDA registered over 500,000 new voters and held rallies across the country for the Democratic ticket. Over 50,000 College Democrats worked on campaigns at the local, state and national level. In 1996, College Democrats of America was successful in registering 1 million young voters. The organization recruited another 50,000 students to work on campaigns throughout the country and sent Democrats like Congresswomen Debbie Stabenow and Lynn Rivers to represent them in Congress. CDA was successful with 18 of our 21 targeted congressional candidates. As a result of our efforts, young people between the ages of 18 and 24 are the most consistent supporters of the Clinton/Gore ticket in the last two presidential elections. As the student arm of the Democratic Party, we strive to inform, educate, organize, mobilize and take action on legislative issues. To help achieve these goals, CDA has a 6 member executive board. This board consists of a President, Vice President, Communications Director, Legislative Director, Membership Director, and Political Director. We have 12 Regional Organizers working with students in their respective states across the country. We also recently elected a new Diversity Advisory Committee which is committed to building campus coalitions and reaching out to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Community Colleges and Technical Schools. The organization is supported by an Executive Director and National Field Director at the national headquarters in Washington, DC. College Democrats are the future leaders of the Democratic Party. We are committed to work tirelessly to protect student aid and continue the fight for affordable health care, access to education, a cleaner environment, and equal opportunity for all Americans. © 1998 College Democrats of America.
