"BATTLE OF THE PLANETS" is now listed and released using the corresponding "GATCHAMAN" episode order currently as a standard, (minus the 20 episodes deleted from the original Japanese package); this same order was used by Sandy Frank Film Syndication when they translated the series into English in 1978; however, this was not the order that many broadcasters were provided with by Sandy Frank Film Syndication, (hereafter known as a "suggested viewing order"). The following chart is an attempt to document and reconcile the different regional variations, compared against the standard order and the "suggested viewing order". |

THE CONWAY TAPE TAP |
The series is listed above using 5
distinctly different orders:
1) the first column
(NO.1) refers to the episode order currently used
by Sandy Frank Film Syndication based on the original Japanese episode order,
(minus the 20 Japanese episodes deleted from the original package); viewed in
this manner, the series retains minor "GATCHAMAN"
continuity but lapses within the English script. This was also the original
production order of the episodes that were translated.
2) the second column (NO.2) refers to
an artificial "suggested viewing order" created at the time of the series'
production in 1978. The 85 episodes were reconfigured with their own imposed
episodic continuity via different credit sequences, varying standards of the
additional animation sequences and continuing script references within the
"7-Zark-7" interludes. As a result of altering the original "GATCHAMAN" continuity, many internal inconsistencies within the
"BATTLE OF THE
PLANETS" storylines
prevail.
.
3) the third column (NO.3) refers to the episode order supplied to Australian
television broadcasters by Sandy Frank Film Syndication, (syndicated on the 0/10
Network 10 1979 - 1981, and later networked on ABC Television Channel 2
1982 - 1985); it has yet to be confirmed whether or not it is the same order
supplied to British or US broadcasters at the time of the series original
distribution); when viewed using this order, the episodes display major
continuity flaws and make less sense than the "suggested viewing
order".
.
4) the fourth column
(NO.4) refers to the telecast order of
UK television broadcaster BBC Television, (networked on BBC 1 1979 - 1985).
At first glance, the UK order appears to be a severe corruption of the same
order supplied to Australian broadcasters, the fragmented nature of the series a
study in perserverance unto itself. Rather than air all 85 episodes as a
complete block, BBC 1 opted to telecast it in batches of episodes, each "series"
containing a different number of episodes screened and also altering the day on
which it was screened. The order listed above is a reflection of the episodes
listed concurrently, (despite each being part of an individual batch of
episodes). To date, 81 of the 85 episodes have been found with confirmed
transmission dates, the remaining 4 episodes unconfirmed; these 4 have been
assigned the remaining numbers 82 - 85, although it is unlikely they actually
screened so late in the run, (it is more than likely that they were screened
unpromoted as part of the Saturday morning children's series "Noel Edmond's
MULTI COLOURED SWAP SHOP"). Note: this order is not a
reflection of the order used more recently by Bravo UK, when the current Sandy
Frank Film Syndication-supplied "GATCHAMAN" order was used apart from the substitution of # 2 with the
"G-FORCE" equivalent episode # 2.
.
5) the fifth column (NO.5) refers to the episode order supplied for "STRIJD DER PLANETEN" to Dutch broadcaster AVRO; although the
order has yet to be confirmed completely, it seems that the order partially
follows the original "GATCHAMAN"
order, rather than the "usual" order supplied by Sandy Frank Film Syndication to
overseas broadcasters between 1978 and 1981. Only 26 of the 85 episodes were
dubbed into Dutch for transmission; the remainder of the series was
unaired.
