AAGAARD-house in Norwegian town of Sandefjord

Aagaard family, Aagaard saga of Kai Aagaard. A small part of the Aagaard family history. (The page is under construction, as most family sagas.) Below is a Norwegian sailship, and a recent painting of the Aagaard house in Sandefjord, one of the oldest wooden houses in Vestfold, Norway, home of ship-owner Johannes Aagaard ( it burned to the ground just a few years ago, after the municipality had adopted a "conservation warrant".) (Norwegian sailing ship) Johannes Aagaard was a well-known merchant of his day, and owned 20 fine sailing ships and several buildings in Sandefjord, and "Aagaards plass", now a market square in the middle of town, still named after Johannes Aagaard. Johannes Aagaard was at a time the most heavily taxed tax-payer in the town of Sandefjord, the town's mayor and a person interested in culture ( i.e. music evenings, reading Dickens). He was also known as the father of the dog tax. A fine portrait of his beautiful wife was painted by the famous painter Mathias Stoltenberg. He went broke, like the greater part of businessmen in his town, as a consequence of a great economic crash/crack/depression at the end of the 19.th century.

Shipowner Johannes Aagaard's father, merchant Lauritz Aagaard came from Denmark

Danish national anthem:

Der er et yndigt land

He came from Jylland, where the farm/manor house Aagaard is situated Den lille havfrue

Lauritz Aagaard went to Tønsberg, where he met a nice young girl whose name was Barbra Johanne Seeberg, her wedding gown is exhibited at the Kunstindustrimuseet in Oslo

The forbears of this first Norwegian Aagaard were merhcants, priests etc. The very first person to take our name Aagaard, another Lauritz (Lauritz Jacobsen Aagaard, christened in 1702) was, in fact, the son of a miller( at the water mill at Aagaard) This father, Jacob Baltzarsen bought his own farm, Aalegaard, in northern Jylland(Jutland). Who was the father of Jacob Baltzarsen? Baltzar, of course, but what more? Certainly not this old chimp( that was a long time ago,in case) Maybe somebody out there on the net knows? The river -"Aa" means river- at Aagaard, is not at all a broad river today, rather an overgrown ditch, but, when I visited Aagaard an Aalegaard I was told that it has been a river before. The watermill we could not find, but the farm Aagaard was a fine place, with bullet holes in the barn and stables, stemming from Swedish sieges. Aalegaard is a charming Danish farm with straw roof,if my memory serves me right. We got a sprout from the old Aagaard manor cactus which grew in the window sill at Aagaard, and it turned out to be a plant wery willing to grow, even in cold Norway, a bit like Jack's bean plant.

A book about"legat-familien Aagaard fra Juelstrup prestegaard"by Max Groshennig ( København 1905) gives a good description of our Aagaard familiy. There are other quite different Aagaard families in Norway and Denmark). Lauritz Jacobsen Aagaard's and wife Anna Deichmanns numerous decendents are- for whatever it might be worth in 1998 ? - entitled to yields from the "Aagaardske familielegat", established in 1790 by "prost" Peder Deichmann Aagaard and from the "Deichmannske familielegat", established in 1869 by Bolette Cathtrine Kraft Gyldendal. To qualify, here, one should be "widows or unmarried daughters of higher officials or others of brave and honorable standing in society, according to Max Groshennig's book of 1905)

Lauritz Jørgen Aagaard came to Norway as a young man, and married a very young daughter of a merchant. Her name was Barbra Johanne Seeberg of Tønsberg. Her bridal dress/gown was red and is exhibited today at "Kunstindustrimuseet, Oslo.

Hereyou see a picture of Johannes' Aagaards grandson as a young cadet, later captain,( Fredrik) Adolf Aagaard ( Kai's father's father Fredrik Adolf Aagaard

Adolfs three children were Øivind, (married to Lilleba Bøgenes), Ingrid(Tutta), (married to Harald Lagesen) and Kais father Viggo(Aagaard) (married to Vivi Hofsvang)

Adolf's father Vigo Waldemar was educated as a businessman in Hamburg, Tyskland, and was to take over hisfather's business and shipping firm, but he died of a dangerous infection less than 30 years old. I have also heard that he put a chicken bone in his throat

Vigo Waldemar Aagaard wrote poems, in a book with very fine handwriting, the book is now in the possession of Kai Aagaard. It was not easy to be a widow with 3 children in those days. The widow had to give piano lessons in Sandefjord. Heldigvis hadde hun den beste bakgrunn, for hun hadde vært Edvard Greigs pianoelev. Adolfs søster var Gustava Kielland Aagaard, middelskolelærer i bl.a.Sandefjord.
