Tates Creek (3-2) vs. Lafayette (4-2) September 28, 2001

This should prove to be an emotional game because first year Lafayette head coach Mike Harmon was an assistant at Tates Creek and this is his first meeting against his old team.  Lafayette's star running back Elrazor Sharp should be at full strength for tonight's contest.  Tates Creek coach Mark Willoughby will depend on a strong defense and a capable group of running backs led by Trae Hughes and Quincy Taylor.  Tates Creek will never be referred to as "Air Creek" but they have an excellent receiver in 6-4 Patrick Gray

Tates Creek needed a goal line stand with less than three minutes remaining in the final period to hang on for a 28-21 win.  Lafayette took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on an 80 yard run by Elrazor Sharp and conversion by Chris Hunt.  The second big play for Lafayette came Kevin White picked off a Tates Creek pass and ran 66 yards to the Tates Creek 4 yard line.  Sharp scored on a 4 yard run to make the score 14-0.  The second quarter was all Tates Creek as they scored on a 1 yard run by Bobby Agboke and tied the score shortly before halftime on a 61 yard pass from David Hamilton to Patrick Gray and the PAT by Joe Ales.

Sharp struck again on a 36 yard run to give Lafayette a 21-14 lead.  Bobby Agboke tied the score on a 4 yard run.  Tates Creek notched the winning touchdown with 7:40 remaining in the game on a 4th-and-7 25 yard pass from David Hamilton to Patrick Gray.  Lafayette had the ball 4th and 1 from the Tates Creek 1 yard line with less than three minutes remaining in the game.  Maurice Walker, Michael Yocum, and George Jones stopped Sharp cold on the play and Tates Creek stopped Lafayette on one final drive as they recovered a Lafayette fumble on the Tates Creek 48 yard line.

Tates Creek was led by Trae Hughes who carried the ball 14 times for 123 yards.  David Hamilton passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 18 completions.  Patrick Gray caught five passes for 137 yards and two scores.  Lafayette was led by Elrazor Sharp who gained 249 yards on 20 carries.  The 36 yard touchdown run was a thing of beauty as Sharp disappeared into a swarm of tacklers only to pop out on the other side and reach the end zone.  LB Roger Lewis was a monster on defense for Lafayette as he recorded 16 unassisted and 4 assisted tackles.  Tates Creek had a great goal line stand when it looked like Lafayette would knot the score.  An excellent and entertaining high school football game on a cool autumn evening -- one to savor no matter who wins.
