West Jessamine (0-1) vs. Lafayette (0-1) August 29, 2003
Coach Wes Johnson's West Jessamine Colts finished 7-4 last season including a stunning win over Boyle County. West Jessamine took a big hit from graduation and lost a lot of stars on offense including Nate Johnson and Montez Graves. They return some solid linemen in 6-0 250 pound Sr. Deric Allen and 6-0 210 pound Sr. Coleman Marcum. They expect help on offense from newcomers 6-1 190 pound So. QB Eric Coker and 5-9 170 pound So. FB Eli Darby.
West Jessamine lost to Ryle 45-14 in week one as experience showed on the offensive side as they lost three fumbles. Eric Coker provided a spark as he ran for touchdowns of 60 and 40 yards.
Coach Mike Harmon guided Lafayette to a 6-4 record last season and the Generals enter this season stronger and more experienced at most positions. They should be led on defense by a gifted DE 6-4 235 pound Sr. Bilal El-Amin. Spencer Fain should star at both WR and DB. Brian Dinger will start at QB and should receive help on offense from two players from the basketball squad, 6-6 Sr. WR Nic Mullins and 6-1 190 pound Sr. RB Kevin Trahan.
Lafayette outgained West Jessamine 421-299 yards and rolled to a 41-28 victory. Lafayette gained 247 yards on the ground and 174 yards through the air. Lafayette led 27-13 at the half and 41-13 after three quarters. West Jessamine cut into the margin as they scored 15 unanswered points in the final period. The play of the night came on Lafayette's second touchdown of the night as Kevin Trahan scored on an electrifying 83 yard run that consisted of speed, fakes, and a stop-and-go move that had to be seen to be believed.
Lafayette was led on the ground tonight by Trahan who carried the ball for 109 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Brian Dinger completed six of eight passes for 124 yards. Spencer Fain caught five passes for 116 yards. LB Chris Wiseman was credited with four solo and 10 assisted tackles, while LB Hunter Petit was credited with one solo and 15 assisted tackles. Eric Coker had an excellent game for West Jessamine. I don't know whether Coker is a QB who believes he is a running back or a running back who is playing QB but tonight he was a "stud" football player. Coker carried the ball 23 times for 160 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed four of nine passes for 79 yards and a 27 yard scoring strike to Brett Hampton. Coker was also credited with two solo and three assisted tackles. Brett Hampton led the Colt defense with five solo and three assisted tackles.
This was a big win for Lafayette tonight. The offense was well balanced and the defense was missing key players which bodes well for the future when the unit is healthy. West Jessamine falls to 0-2 but this squad if very young and should be good down the line.
