Bryan Station (8-1) vs. Henry Clay (9-0)  October 29, 1999

This game has been anticipated since early in the season and the district title and Lexington bragging rights are at stake.  Coach John Nochta's Bryan Station team brings tremendous speed at the skill positions and a defense anchored by linebacker Josh Hurst.   QB J.T. Haskins, the option magician, has 1135 yards and 16 TDs rushing, and has passed for 703 yards and 13 touchdowns.   Eric Shelton, a 6-3 235 pound wrecking ball tailback, has rushed for 1377 yards and 20 touchdowns.   Greg Shiddell, a fullback with speed, has rushed for 413 yards and 6 touchdowns.   Ultra quick wideouts Robert Haskins and Marquis Johnson have 11 receptions and 7 TDs and 10 receptions and 6 TDs respectively.

Henry Clay's top threat, QB Shane Boyd, is questionable tonight because of a collarbone injury.   Shane has rushed for 443 yards and 8 TDs and passed for 1439 yards and 17 TDs.   Raymon Smith has rushed for 792 yards and 16 TDs and   Kenny Dismeaux added 405 yards and 3 TDs.   Zia Combs has caught 23 passes for 469 yards and 7 TDs.   Kenny Dismeaux has snagged 16 receptions for 415 yards and 5 TDs and   Joe Diefel has added 15 receptions for 326 yards and 4 touchdowns.   The Henry Clay backs have the luxury of running behind one of the largest offensive lines around.   The Henry Clay defense will be led by linebackers Dan Dickerson and Will Wheeler.

Coach Sam Simpson of Henry Clay made the decision to not risk further injury to Shane Boyd, holding him out of tonight's game.  Henry Clay's injury woes continued as wide receiver Zia Combs reinjured his knee in the game and may be out for the play-offs.   Bryan Station flawlessly executed their option attack and defeated Henry Clay 21-13.   J.T. Haskins, a magician at quarterback, rushed for 124 yards on 12 carries and scored the first touchdown on a 63 yard run.   Speedy fullback Greg Shiddell added 96 yards on 15 carries and scored on a 39 yard run.   Eric Shelton rushed 16 times for 122 yards and and 8 yard TD run.   Bryan Station's defense was tough when it had to be, and J.T. Haskins also intercepted two passes.

Henry Clay fought hard and was led by Raymon Smith's 78 yards on 22 carries.   Josh Butcher played well as Boyd's replacement, completing 5 of 10 passes for 70 yards and one touchdown pass.   Butcher hit Kenny Dismeaux with a 24 yard scoring pass and a two point conversion to Joe Diefel to pull Henry Clay within eight points 21-13.   Bryan Station ran out the clock with their powerful ground game eating up yardage behind a fine performance by their offensive line.

Both John Notcha's Defenders and Sam Simpson's Blue Devils have had great seasons.  Both teams finished 9-1 and could make a lot of noise in the play-offs.  Simpson hopes to have Boyd back in the post season and I applaud his decision not to rush the issue and risk further injury to a young man with a great future ahead of him.   Bryan Station is on a roll and should provide a formidable opponent for any team it faces.
