Through her years as working as an assassin Kitana has learned many secrets, especially about her own past. She learns that her father died during the invasion of his realm Edenia, the evil Shao Kahn took over and ruled at the side of Sindel, her mother, who was once the Queen of edenia. But Kahns power drove her insane, and she comitted suicide on a young age. Kahn was so angry about this that he took her soul, and her daughter Kitana as his own. But Determined to take back what is rightfully hers Kitana now begins her own quest against the outworld ruler Shao Kahn. She does this by entering the second new Mortal Kombat tournament. But although Kahn was defeated she couldn't restore her parents' realm to a noble kingdom. For her this means she has to continue her quest against Shao Kahn, alongside the chosen warriors.

After murdering her evil clone Mileena, Kitana is accused of treason by the high courts of the outworld. Shao Kahn appoints a group of warriors specifically to catch his ''daughter'' and bring her back alive. But Kitana must find a way to reach her resurrected mother Sindel, who is now the unknowing queen of outworld aside Shao Kahn, and warn her about their true past. He is able to evade the evil clutches of Shao Kahn and escapes into the unknown regions of earth. She survives the assassination attempt by the vile creature Reptile and allies herself with her onetime comrade Jade. Together with the help of earth's warriors Kitana reaches Sindel and turns the queen against her emperor during Shao Kahn's invasion. With Kahn defeated earth turns back into its original state, as is Kitana's realm of Edenia where she will rule aside her mother.

With the attack of the evil god Shinnok during his war, Edenia comes into a time of great danger. Because the earth warriors are fighting for the sake of their own realm, they can't fight for the sake of Edenia. Shinnok is now able to attack Edenia and take it over. Edenia now seems to be lost after the outworld invasion. But when the Champion of Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang manages to defeat Shinnok it appears that he not only saved his own realm but also the one of Edenia. Kitana finds herself back on her beloved world and thanks Liu Kang for his help, and bids him farewell after he doesn't accepts her offer to rule at her side in Edenia.

Having freed her home world of Edenia from Shao Kahn's grasp, Kitana led her people to battle against the weakened Emperor in a pre-emptive strike. She allied with the Shokan armies of Outworld, led by Prince Goro, and together their two nations were on the brink of victory by effectively confronting Kano's troops. But tragedy struck when Goro was killed in battle and the Shokan army spiralled into leaderless chaos. But then, much to Kitana's disbelief, Kano's forces retreated. Word started to spread that the Emperor, Shao Kahn, had been slain by unknown assassins. It seemed as though Kitana had won. Kitana had won, but at a terrible cost to the Shokan people.

While returning to the portal back to Edenia, Kitana happened upon Kung Lao,
who was traveling alone. It was through Kung Lao that she learned of the Deadly Alliance and the death of Liu Kang at the hands of Shang Tsung. It seemed that her return home would have to wait. She have her military commanders orders to remain at the camp until she returned from an excursion with Kung Lao. Thye were both in need of special martial arts training from the Outworld master, Bo' Rai Cho. After their training, Kitana and Kung Lao finally confronted the Deadly Alliance in Shang's
Palace. While Kung Lao faced off with Shang Tsung, Kitana engaged Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat. The battle was intense, they both emerged victorious.
