In the summer of 1990,"Northern Exposure" premiered. During it's five year duration, it received several awards and was considered in the top 10 shows at one time. I believe, and others will agree, that it was the best show ever.
The show centered around the idea of a docter from New York trapped in a small Alaskan town called Cicely. Joel Fleishman reluctantly went to Alaska to pay off his state-financed medical education.
As the show evolved, it centered more around the community as a whole, the relationships, and the strange happenings in Cicely. The shows main characters were Dr.Fleishman, Maggie (bush-pilot,Joel's love intrest), Chris-in-the-morning (DJ-philosopher, ex-con), Holling (owner of the brick), Shelly (Holling's girlfreind), Ed (shamen, filmmaker),
Maurice (millionaire, owner of KBHR), the silient-but-deadly Marilyn (Joel's receptionist), and the lovely Ruth-Anne (Owner of local store).
Northern Exposure had loads of guest start too. From Adam, the bigfoot gourmet cook, to Mike, the enviromentalist "bubble-boy". The words "off-beat" and "quirky" fail to descibe the pure individuality of the show.
The show was cancelled in 1995. A fall in ratings was caused by the departure of Rob Morrow (Dr. Fleishman), and the move from Mondays to Wednesdays. Now, folks new to the show are discovering it on A&E and getting hooked. Hooked to the story lines, the quirky characters, the music, but most of all to Cicely.
