Which two ventriloquist dummies did Lucy work with? Charlie McCarthy (in the movies) and Jerry Mahoney (on The Lucy Show). DESI TRIBUTE Desi is an unsung hero of the development of television. He was a humble man who sought out answers to questions which would lead to the development of the situation comedy and TV dramas (in fact, he hosted the first ever aired episode of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone). Like Ozzie Nelson, Desi is not recognized as a creative genius. He is remembered for the TV character that he portrayed. There is so much to learn from his life. As you may know, he started our very poor, his family fled from Cuba, and Desi worked his way to playing for Spanish bandleader Xavier Cugot, the most popular Latin-American bandleader of the forties. Cugot was "up there" with the greats of his era: Artie Shaw, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Tony Pastor. At the height of Cugot's success, Desi stepped out with very little and started his own band. We all know what happened. He became a night club sensation introducing Cuban music and his own unique personality to thousands. He produced a steady stream of hit records. Then, he landed a bit part in a Hollywood movie and met a tall red headed woman. Now, what was her name? Also, Desi honorably served his adopted country during World War II. And, lest we forget, he bought RKO Studios renamed it Desilu and was it's chairman of the board. He produced televison programs (both comdey and drama) including The Untouchables and Star Trek!
