The Tiny Rosebud
The Master Gardener from heaven above
Planted a seed in the garden of love,
And from it there grew a rosebud small
That never had time to open at all.
For God in His perfect and all-wise way
Chose this rose for His heavenly bouquet,
And great was the joy of this tiny rose
To be the one our Father chose to leave earths garden
For one on high where roses bloom always and never die.
So while you can't see your precious rose bloom,
You know the great Gardener from the upper room
Is watching and tending this wee rose with care,
Tenderly touching each petal so fair.
So think of your darling with the angels above,
Secure and contented and surrounded by love,
And remember God blessed and enriched your lives, too,
For in dying your darling brought heaven closer to you!
Krabbe Disease
(Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy)
Krabbe disease is a lethal, demyelinating condition caused by a deficiency of galactosylceramidase (GALC) enzyme activity. This leads to accumulation of cerebroside and psychosine. The most common form of Krabbe disease is the infantile form. These babies have mental and motor deterioration related to loss of myelin in the brain and peripheral nervous system. They usually die by two years of age. Less common are later onset forms of Krabbe disease that affect children and adults. It is likely that different mutations in the GALC gene cause this variability in onset and severity of symptoms. Sometimes differences may occur even among family members. Krabbe disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, two copies of non-working (GALC) genes must be present for symptons to occur. Researchers are currently trying to develop methods of treatment.
Infantile Krabbe Disease (90% of cases)
Symptoms usually start at three to six months of age. Development may be normal up to that time. An increase response to sensory stimuli (irritability), developmental delay or regression, difficulity in feeding, and seizures are common first symptoms. Children then have a more severe and rapid deterioration of mental and motor function. Hypertonia (increased muscle tone) and problems with vision develop. Eventually children lose mental and motor function, become deaf and blind, cannot move or speak, and typically must be fed through a tube. Death usually occurs within one year after symptoms appear.
