Historic Mamluk Arabian
Costume!
Brand new from MarstonArt... LSQ costume sized to fit Traditional scale Breyers, Peter
Stone Arabian, and other similar resin or plastic model horses. Each one of my costumes
is a one-of-a-kind creation, taking over 60 hours to complete. I try to make them
relatively sturdy, easy to “tack up,” and above all....as realistic as possible.
I love all of my costumes, when they are finally completed to my satisfaction, but this one
is definitely one of my all-time favorites!! Mamluks were Muslim slaves (mostly Turkish), recruited
as young boys, and trained as soldiers to fight against the Crusaders. (Circa 1250-1517)
Their dress and tack was very ornate, and elegant...they were, in fact, referred to as
“Slave-Kings.” This costume has been based upon prints, and paintings of Mamluk
warriors...
Costume includes:
Fully adjustable bridle, with hand-crafted, and curb chain. Throatlatch is gold elastic cord,
to allow for easy fit. Decorative neckpiece has golden wire sewn into it, so that it will stay
draped along the neck as it should. Browband has gold medallion center decoration, and
chain noseband, with golden crescent charms.
Fully adjustable breastcollar, attaching to saddle on either side of the horn, using an
adjustable strap, and working clasp. There is an adjustable strap attaching to the girth. “V”
design allows the breastcollar to accurately fit along the shoulder lines of your model. The
collar is made from golden leather, and has golden medallions, and charms, accented with
blue Austrian crystals, tassels, and golden bells.
Saddle is made with a “Sculpey” tree, covered with fabric, and decorated. Filigreed metal
stirrups are handmade, complete with adjustable straps...so that a rider doll can be
accommodated with ease. Girth has a Western style cinch. Saddle cloth is made from a
golden tapestry fabric, and has gold trim, braid, fringe, and gold medallions. Saddle-drape
is blue tapestry fabric, with gold trim, gold plated metal plates, and golden fringe. The
drape is a separate piece from the saddle, completely removable. It fits over the saddle,
and is held in place with a golden overgirth. There is a double pistol holster across the
horn. (Also removable, and complete with tiny pistols....of course!!)
Handwrapped, beaded, and “fluffed” tassels.... (“fluffing” the embroidery floss gives it a
more realistic look...more like a real horse-hair tassel)
As always, digital pictures are not what I would wish them to be, and my camera HATES
anything gold and shiny....but hopefully the description helps explain the details that do
not show in the photos. Please email with any questions, or comments.
