After many years of planning and dreaming, I finally have my own fully equipped blacksmith shop. The shop is located in Mill Spring, North Carolina, behind the old school, which is now known as The Mill Spring Agricultural Development Center. If you are in the area, you are most welcome to come by for a visit.

George Matthews lives in Saluda, North Carolina and is an accomplished artisan with works exhibited in galleries throughout the south, as well in various architectural resource publications. His products include decorative exterior iron work, beautiful and practical accents for use in the home, and sculptural works of art for the enhancement of indoor and outdoor spaces. (See the representative samples shown below)

Mr. Matthews was the founder of The Foothills of the Carolinas Blacksmith Guild, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and instruction of the ancient art of traditional blacksmithing; the performance of community service projects forged by Guild members; and, through presentations and demonstrations by the Guild members on behalf of non-profit, community, and civic organizations and educational institutions. Mr. Matthews and the formation of the Guild were featured in a Hendersonville, NC, Times-News article.

Between 2001 and the present, George Matthews has taught blacksmithing at two boys camps near Tuxedo, North Carolina. For a number of years, he taught beginning, intermediate and advanced blacksmithing courses at a local community college in Henderson County. He has taught beginning workshops for Tryon Arts and Crafts in Tryon, NC.

He is also a member of ABANA , the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America, and is now serving on the Board of Directors. George enjoys sharing the ancient art of blacksmithing through demonstrations at festivals, fairs and schools; individual instruction for the aspiring artist is also available. Custom work can be commissioned and completed in the home forge or on site. Please contact George for more information. The Email address is shown below.

His work is presently being shown in the Farm Store at the The Mill Spring Agricultural Development Center located in Mill Spring, North Carolina.

Other representative samples of my work includes mirrors, tables, chandeliers, outdoor sculptures, sculptures, gates, lamps, fireplace tools, tool stands and screens, crosses, hand forged hardware , miscellaneous hand forged items, The Magic Garden, Wine Wizard, hand forged bolt and wing nut , and for our equestrain friends .

One of my "whimsical" sculptures is The Magic Garden. The Magic Garden is home to the Faeries and Wizards. They are able to frolic all day knowing they are protected from their mortal enemy, “The Slimy Snail”, by the serpent of their realm.

"In a hundred, two hundred or three hundred years it will not matter how large your bank account was, how large your house was, or what kind of car you drove, What will matter, did you make a difference in the life of one child?"

"You are never given the dream without the power to make it come true."
