"The church is not the building, but the people, we are the church."

Located in the heart of the Bayou Liberty area in Slidell, Louisiana, St. Genevieve Church and its parishoners represent the beauty that is Southeast Louisiana

St. Genevieve, Pre-Katrina

Just thirty minutes from New Orleans, outside of Slidell proper is Bayou Liberty.
St. Genevieve Church is the center of this area, both geographically and spiritually.

This site will document the rebirth of the physical church.

The Chapel that faces the bayou survived the flood and wind.

Built in 1958, St. Genevieve Catholic Church on Bayou Liberty has been demolished, nearly 18 months after Hurricane Katrina toppled its steeple and swamped the sanctuary, leaving behind 2 feet of muck.

The demolition of the church was finished by Mardi Gras day.

From Sandra Pichon's column in Sunday's Times Picayune (February 18, 2007)
Chris Roussell of Concrete Busters of Louisiana was wielding the equipment that was doing the job, but took the time to offer a word of encouragement. "With every death is a resurrection. We are approaching Lent, so what better time to have a new beginning for St. Genevieve," he said.

As I watched Roussell gently take the brick and mortar from the church, I was struck by how he did this job with such respect. He didn't just crash and destroy. He took section by section and removed it without seeming to wreck it. I appreciated that as I thought back to this wonderful church's beginnings.

In the months after the hurricane, Mass was held outdoors under a 300-year-old, storm-battered live oak,

where services were held more than 100 years ago before the first church was built on the picturesque site the Bayou.

The congregation now meets in the renovated fellowship hall. But the symbolic return to the church's roots has inspired parishioners as they band together to rebuild the church, which has served as a rallying point for the devastated Bayou Liberty area.

"The building will be gone, but it is only a building. The spirituality and love of the people of this parish will remain and new memories and new lessons will be learned as the St. Genevieve community moves into the future."
~ Sandra Pichon
