Chapter 22

Jason stood there with his mouth open, not knowing what to say. Megan bit her lower lip, it was out… what now?

“Are you serious?” Jason asked after a minute of silence, he looked straight at Megan, “Megan? Is he just covering for Jeff or are you two together?”

Megan’s voice shook as she answered, “Adam… we are… Adam and I are together…”

“What?” Jason yelled, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I knew you’d get angry,” Megan cried, her voice full of emotion, “Look how mad you are. You’d never let me date him.”

“Damn right I won’t. I know how he is with woman. I’d never let my cousin get hurt by him,” he said grabbing onto Megan’s arm, “Come on, we’re going.”

“Jay,” she cried, “You’ve gotta listen to us! He’s not like that!”

“Jay, just let me explain,” Adam pleaded. Jason turned to look at him, not saying anything.

“I love Megan Jay,” Adam said, “Ever since we were younger I have. She means so much to me, you can’t just tell us to stop seeing each other. I’m sorry it was behind your back, but you have to understand there was no other choice for us.”

“No other choice?” Jason cried, “Yeah there was, you could have stayed away from my kid cousin…”

“I’m not a child anymore,” Megan interrupted, “I make my own decisions, and I decided I want to be with Adam!”

“How long has this been going on?” Jason asked, “Since she got here?”

Megan and Adam glanced at each other. Megan then looked over at Jeff, but his eyes were looking down.

“How long?” Jay asked again.

“Since we were in high school,” Megan said quietly, just above a whisper.

“What?” Jason asked, totally shocked, “Is that why you came to visit me Meg? So you could spend time with Adam? Is that it?”

“No,” Megan cried, “of course not! Jay, I…”

“And you Adam,” Jason said cutting Megan off, “Is that the only reasons you were friends with me, to get with my cousin?”

“No,” Adam said loudly shaking his head, “No, not at all!”

“And you love her?” Jason asked.

“Yeah, I do,” Adam said nodding.

“Go back to your hotel room Megan,” Jason said quietly.

“What??” Megan asked, “Are you telling me to leave? This is my life Jay, you can’t just tell me to leave!”

“Megan now!” Jason demanded, his voice angry.

Megan looked from Jay to Adam, tears in her eyes. She looked at Adam one more time then ran out of the room. Jeff watched after her, not sure whether to run after her or not. He decided against it, he should stay and moderate for Jay and Adam.

“Meg,” Jeff saw Adam start to go after her, but Jason grabbed his arm.

“We have to talk now,” Jason said angrily.

Adam’s eyes filled with guilt, “Jay, I am so sorry…”

“I want answers,” Jason said, cutting him off, “You and Meg are having sex?”

Adam felt himself not able to talk, his mouth felt dry. He looked at the floor. He nodded his head.

“Is that all it is to you?” Jason asked, “Sex?”

“No!” Adam cried, “I would never consider what Meg and I have just sex. I respect her, I love her. I want to be with her! Jay, you have to understand that, I love her.”

“Don’t tell me I have to understand anything,” Jason yelled angrily, “For years you have lied to me. I don’t even know if I can trust anything you say now. Just get out of my damn life and get out of Megan’s.”

“Jay, calm down,” Jeff finally said, “I’m sure we can work this out. Just chill.”

“I can’t even look at you right now,” Jason said to Adam, “I need to get out of here.”

“Jay, I…” Adam started, following his friend out of the room.

Jeff grabbed Adam’s arm, “Don’t man, just give him time.”

Megan lay on her bed, curled in a ball, she fought back tears, but knew she wouldn’t be able to hold them back much longer.

Jason burst into the room a few minutes later. His face showed nothing but anger.

“Jay let me explain,” Megan said sitting up, looking at her cousin.

He looked at her, “What could you say that Adam hasn’t?”

Megan lowered her head to stare at the comforter, she bit her lip fighting back the tears that threatened to spill.

“Jay… I love you. And I never meant to go behind your back,” Megan whispered, “And I am so sorry. I didn’t want you to find out like this. Adam and I were going to tell you.”

Jason laughed, “I believe that.”

“Jay, please…” Megan started.

“I want you to leave,” Jason said quietly.

“Leave?” Megan asked, her stomach dropping.

“I want you to leave,” Jason demanded, “Call the airport and see if you can get a flight for tomorrow.”

“What?” Megan cried. The tears finally started to spill down her cheeks, “Jay!”

Jason turned away so he didn’t have to look at his cousin.

“Jay please, let’s just work this out,” Megan pleaded, she spun her cousin around so they were facing each other. Jason looked at her tear-covered face. Megan could see tears in the corner of Jay’s eyes.

“Megan,” Jason said slowly. He put his arms around her and pulled her close into a hug. Megan cried into his shoulder.

“Jay, please don’t make me go,” she cried into his shirt.

Jason broke the hug and looked Megan in the eyes, “You have to leave. I’m sorry.” With that he walked out of the room, not even looking back at Megan.

Megan stood in the middle of her hotel room alone, her lip quivering, tears still fresh on her cheek. A small sob escaped her lips as she stared at the door her cousin had just walked out of. She felt miserable. Alone and miserable.
