Chapter 23
Jeff knocked on the door to Megan’s room softly.
“It’s open,” he heard Megan say softly.
“Hey Meg, it’s Jeff” he said walking into the room. He looked at the suitcases piled on the bed. Megan appeared out of the bathroom.
“Meg, what’s going on?” he asked his eyes still on the suitcases.
“Jay wants me to leave,” she said softly, “So I’m gonna go stay with some friends in New York. I called the airport. I have a 10 o’clock flight tomorrow.”
“You’re leaving?” Jeff asked. He finally got a good look at Megan. Her mascara was running and he could see some tears still on her cheeks.
“I don’t wanna,” she said, her lips shaking. More tears threatened to spill.
“I don’t want you to either,” Jeff said wrapping her in hug.
Megan sniffled, “I know you have a show tomorrow night, but do you think you could take me to the airport tomorrow?”
Jeff smiled, “Of course Meg. I’m sure Adam will want to go too.”
Megan nodded, “Is he ok?”
“He’s upset,” Jeff told her, “I’m gonna stay with Jay tonight and Adam will stay with Matt. Hearing that you’re leaving is going to kill him.”
“I just want to be with him,” Megan said, letting fresh tears spill down her face, “Why can’t Jay accept that?”
Jeff shook his head, “I don’t know Megan. I really don’t know.”

Jason looked up from his spot on the bed as he heard the hotel door shut.
“Hey,” he mumbled.
“Hey,” Jeff muttered quietly back.
“Were you with Meg?” Jason asked watching Jeff lay on his bed.
“Mhmm,” Jeff said closing his eyes, tired.
“How is she?” Jason asked, trying to keep the concern out of his voice.
Jeff rolled onto his side so he could see Jason. “I’d be lying if I said she wasn’t upset.” Jeff said, “Her plane leaves tomorrow at 10.”
“Are you going to take her?” Jason questioned.
“Yeah,” Jeff nodded, “Are you going to come?”
“I don’t think so,” Jason said shaking his head.
“You’re not?” Jeff asked, sitting up shocked.
“Why would I?” Jason questioned.
“Because she’s your cousin and you love her and God knows when you’ll see her again,” Jeff answered, almost angrily.
“It’s not like she wants me there,” Jason told him.
“Oh God Jay,” Jeff mumbled, “You know she loves you! She wants you to be there. Why are you so against her and Adam being together?”
“Because I know how he treats women,” Jason responded.
“I have never seen Adam be anything but a perfect gentleman around women,” Jeff said, “I think I know what’s wrong.”
“And what’s wrong?” Jason asked annoyed.
“You don’t like the idea that you can’t protect Megan anymore,” Jeff said, “And now she has Adam who you think will take your place.”
“How could he take my place?” Jason asked, getting more annoyed having this conversation.”
“That he’s going to be the most important man in her life,” Jeff explained, “You told me that her father was never around and you two have always been so close. You’re the most important man in her life and you’re scared that Adam is going to take that away from you.”
“I don’t…” Jason stumbled over the words, “I don’t. I’m… just…”
Jeff looked over at him, “You can admit it Jay. You’re scared that Adam is going to become more important than you.”
“I don’t want to have this conversation,” Jason demanded standing up angrily, “I’m going for a walk.”
“Are you going to come tomorrow Jay?” Jeff asked, just as Jay was about to walk out of the room.
“No,” Jay said simply, “I’m not.”
“She’s gate 7 if you decide to,” Jeff called, but realized it was no use. Jay was already gone.
