Chapter 24

“So this is it,” Megan said with a sad smile on her face, she readjusted her carry on.

“I’m gonna miss you Meg,” Jeff said wrapping her in a hug, “I love ya kid.”

Megan sniffed, “I’m gonna miss you too Jeff. You’ve become my best friend and I love you.” She let some tears slide down her face.

Jeff cupped her face in his hands. “Be strong Meg,” Jeff said gently, “Adam seeing you crying will just upset him more.”

Megan nodded as she quickly wiped the tears off her cheek, she smiled up at Jeff. She loved him, he was her best friend, and she was going to miss him so much.

“Where did Adam go anyways?” Jeff asked looking around.

“Quick bathroom trip,” Megan said, also scanning the crowd, “You talk to Jay last night?”

Jeff nodded, “I don’t think he’s coming. He’s still feeling a little betrayed.”

“Flight 132 to New York now boarding at gate 7,” a voice over the announcements made.

“That’s my flight,” Megan said frantically looking around, “Where’s Adam?”

“Sorry long line,” Adam said jogging up behind them.

“They just called my flight, I guess I’m leaving,” Megan said sadly, urging the tears to stay back.

“God,” Adam said pulling her close to him, “I’m gonna miss you so much. I love you Meg.”

Megan bit her lip fighting back tears that were forming in her eyes, “I love you too Adam,” she managed to mumble without the tears spilling down her cheeks.

Megan took a deep breath, “stay strong,” she urged herself, “don’t lose it now.”

“Megan, you’re everything to me,” Adam whispered, “I can’t believe you have to leave.”

She couldn’t fight them back any longer, the tears spilled down her cheeks as she dug her face into Adam’s shoulder.

“Come on Meg, you better go,” Adam said after a few seconds. Megan looked up at him, his smile was sad and forced and his eyes were glistening with tears.

She kissed him quickly and smiled. She smiled over at Jeff and gave a small wave as she turned her back to them and started walking away. Her heart ached. She was leaving Adam, she was leaving Jeff, but most of all Jason hadn’t come to say goodbye. She turned around once more to look at Jeff and Adam. They stood there with solemn expressions on their face.

“Wait!” she heard someone call, “Meg, Meg!!!”

Her head whipped around, not knowing what was going, then she saw Jason running towards her.

“What are you doing here?” she asked astounded that he had come.

“I did some thinking,” he said quickly, “And I couldn’t let you leave… not like this. Come here,” he grabbed her hand and dragged her over to where Jeff and Adam were standing.

“Jay, what’s going on?” Jeff asked.

“Just listen,” Jason said holding his hand up for silence, “Meg you’re my baby cousin, at least I thought you were. But you’re a grown woman and I should let you live your own life. I thought I was protecting you, from getting hurt, but I realized that I wasn’t, I was making it worse. I was scared, I thought Adam was going to take my place… thought that he’d be there to protect you and you wouldn’t need me anymore.”

“Jay, how could you think that anyone could ever replace you?” Megan asked, “You’re my cousin and I love you, and I no one could ever take your place…”

“I know that now,” Jason interrupted, “I got some good advice,” he smiled at Jeff.

“And you,” Jason said turning to Adam.

“Man, I am so sorry,” Adam said apologizing again.

“No Adam I’m sorry,” Jason said, “You’re my best friend and I shouldn’t have acted like that. You’re a great guy and Megan is lucky to have you.”

Adam smiled at his friends words, “Thanks Jay, that means a lot.”

Megan watched as Jay and Adam hugged, she looked over at Jeff, who had a small smile on his face.

“Does this mean I’m not leaving?” Megan asked, looking around at the three guys.

Jason smiled, “If you want to stay, I’d like you to stay.”

Megan nodded, “I’d really like to stay.”

Jason smiled, “Good.”

She threw her arms around her cousin, “Thanks so much Jay, I love you.”

“What are you doing hugging me?” he asked with a grin, “You’re supposed to be hugging Adam.”

She smiled as she walked over to Adam. He wrapped his arms around her and lifted her into the air.

“I’m staying baby,” she whispered kissing him.

Adam laughed, “I told you this would all work out.”

“See Meg,” Jeff said, “You’re where you’re supposed to be, with people who love you.”

Megan looked around. Adam squeezed her hand gently. She smiled as she looked from Jason to Jeff to Adam.

“You’re right Jeff,” she nodded, “I guess I am.”
