Chapter 6

Adam quickly walked into the club. He scanned the dance floor for Megan.

“Adam,” he heard a voice call. He turned around to see Jeff making his way to him.

“Jeff, have you seen Megan?”

“She’s at the bar, she’s pretty wasted. I wanted to drive her back to the hotel but she demanded she was fine and I should leave her alone,” Jeff answered.

“Ok,” Adam nodded, “Thanks.”

“Can you make sure Jason knows I wasn’t trying to get with his cousin?” Jeff asked.

“Don’t worry about Jay,” Adam said, “He’s just protective of Meg.”

“I noticed,” Jeff laughed, “Good luck with Meg.”

“Yeah thanks,” he said as he watched Jeff walk into the crowd.

“Hey Meg,” Adam said as he approached the bar.

“What do you want?” she asked, obviously she was wasted.

“I came to take you back to the hotel, Jay’s worried about you,” Adam said, talking to her like she was a little kid.

“Like hell he’s worried about me, and don’t treat me like a little kid. I’m a grown women, I can do what I want,” she said as she took another sip of her beer.

“Let’s go Meg,” he said impatiently.

“Leave me alone,” she said angrily.

“Come on Meg,” he fought.

“Get away Adam,” she yelled.

“Don’t make a fool of yourself Meg,” Adam warned. Meg looked at him crossly, then stood up, almost falling over.

“Fine,” she said, “But I’m driving myself home!”

“Like hell you are,” Adam yelled, “You can’t even stand up.”

“Go away Adam, I know what I’m doing!”

“God Meg,” he cried, “We’re going.” With that he picked her up and threw her over his shoulder in one single movement.

“Adam, what the fuck are you doing? Put me down!”

“Sorry Meg,” he said walking out into the parking lot, “If you’re gonna act like this it’s the only way.” He sat her down on the pavement as he opened the door to his car. He lifted her back up and placed her in the passenger seat, she slumped in it- arms crossed.

They drove for 5 minutes before Meg broke the silence.

“Are you going to tell Jay about us?”

“I don’t know,” Adam answered, “Are you?”

“I don’t think so,” she said, “he doesn’t need to know the reason I left right before my junior year was because of you.”

“That’s not fair Meg!” Adam demanded, “I admitted that I made a mistake! I apologized, you know I wouldn’t have done anything to hurt you.”

Megan softened, suddenly feeling bad, “I’m sorry,” she mumbled.

“It’s ok,” he said, patting her upper leg, “It was so long ago…”

“Do you ever miss me?” she interrupted.

“Of course I do,” he replied, “You weren’t only my first love, you were one of my best friends.”

Megan smiled as he said that, he felt the same way she did.

“Adam,” she cried, “Stop the car.”

“What, why?” he asked slowing down and pulling onto the side of the road.

“I think I’m going to be sick,” she cried as she quickly jumped out of the car and went running to the guardrail.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*Flashback*
Megan heard Jason’s car pull up to the house. She jumped off her bed and looked at herself in the mirror to make sure she looked ok. Adam and Jasonwere getting back from their prom. It was noon of the next day. Adam had talked to Jason about bringing Meg. He told Jay, “Yeah, you know ‘cause we’re such good friends.” Jason said no, that they’d have more “fun” without his cousin being there. Adam apologized to Meg over and over about how she couldn’t go.
“You have a good time,” she said kissing him, “Just not too much.”
She made her way down the stairs.
“Hey,” she said as she walked into the living room where Jason and Adam were standing. Her eyes made contact with Adam, and he quickly looked away. Megan’s stomach sunk, something wasn’t right.
“How was it?” She asked nervously.
“I had a lot of fun,” Jason said giving a sly look to Adam, “I think Adam did too.”
“What kind of fun?” Megan asked nervously.
“You’re so innocent Meggy,” Jason joked as he put his arm around her, “You know… we just had- fun.”
“Both of you?” she asked, she felt her eyes watering up.
“I know I did,” Jason laughed, then winked “I think Adam there did too.”
Megan looked at Adam, her eyes wide. “I’m so sorry,” he mouthed, his eyes showed nothing but shame and guilt. Megan felt her own eyes go watery.
“I’m glad you guys had a…” her voice broke, “good time. I have to go out, I forgot I told Jen I’d meet her.” She quickly ran out of the room, and out of the house.
“Huh?” Jason asked, his eyes on the front door where Megan just walked out.
“I should be going too,” Adam said as he walked to the door, “I’ll call you later.”
“Ok,” Jason said confused, “I’ll see you later.” Adam walked out the door, as Jason stood alone and confused.
Adam ran around the corner to the area he and Megan had met so many times in the middle of the night. He heard Meg before he saw her. He heard sniffles, then a low whimper.
“Meg,” he said coming across the teenage girl who was sitting scrunched in a ball, “I am so sorry, it just happened.”
“It just happened?” she asked pissed off, “How can something that big ‘just happen’?
“I was drunk,” Adam said, “Meg, you’ve got to believe me, she means nothing to me! I care about you.” He tried to touch her face, but she pulled away tears streaming down her face.
“Megan, you’ve got to believe me, I care about you!” Adam demanded.
“I’m leaving,” Megan finally said looking up.
“Leaving?” Adam asked, “What are you talking about?”
“I got an offer to study abroad in France for my junior and senior years,” she explained, “the only reason I decided not to was because I didn’t want to leave you. Now, I want to get out of here.” She stood up and started to leave, Adam pulled her arm back to him so they were nose to nose.
“Please don’t go,” Adam pleaded, his eyes full of hope and love. Megan didn’t say anything; she just turned away and walked back to her house, leaving Adam standing by himself, feeling guilty and remorseful.
