Chapter 9

Matt opened his eyes and yawned. It had been the first time he had slept a whole night through since the accident. He smiled as he knew Emily was just a few rooms down. He loved the idea of her being close, it made everything else seem so far away.

He quickly climbed out of bed and pulled on a pair of jeans and white t-shirt before pulling his curly brown hair and walking out of his bedroom. He stood outside the room Emily was in and put his ear to the door. It was so quiet in there. Could she still be sleeping? Matt looked at his watch, it was after 10.

“Em,” Matt called softly as he opened the door slowly and peeked his head in, “you awake?”

He looked at the room in surprise, it was empty. The bed was made neatly and the extra blanket was folded at the end along with the clothes he had lent her.

“Emily!” Matt called as he walked down the stairs. She couldn’t have left, they still needed to talk. Matt had so much he wanted to tell her.

“Em?” he asked as he peered into the empty living room. He shook his head, where could she have gone. He walked into the kitchen to find it empty; he let out a frustrated sigh. Where was she?

His eyes scanned the kitchen and fell upon a piece of single white paper on the countertop. As he reached for it, he realized it was in Emily’s handwriting.

Matt,

I’m really sorry I had to leave so quick, but I had something I had to do. Thanks for everything, I’ll give you a call soon.

Emily

Matt groaned as he read the paper over. She was always leaving, whenever he needed to tell her something she’d be gone. Matt crumbled the piece of paper into a little ball and shut his eyes. He tightened his grip on the paper so much his knuckles were turning white. Out of nowhere he let out a aggravated yell that surprised even himself as he threw the paper across the room.

Emily reached her hand deeper in her jean pockets. She sighed as she stepped through a puddle, the water splattering onto her leg. She didn’t care; she was still confused, confused and lonely.

Emily reached her house and noticed she had left the front door open, she shrugged, it didn’t surprise her, last night was all a blur to her.

Emily didn’t remember leaving her house, or the long walk to Matt’s. She didn’t remember the storm she walked in or ringing the doorbell. All she remembered was Matt opening the door, remembered her need to talk to him, her long for her to tell him how she felt.

She remembered Matt pulling her into the house. She wanted to tell him how she felt, but couldn’t. Whether she was scared or confused she didn’t know, she just remembered wanting to tell him. But she couldn’t say anything.

She smiled at the thought of Matt ushering her into the bathroom with dry, warm clothes; His touch as he wrapped the blanket around her, the concern in his eyes and in his voice. She wanted to cry as she remembered him carrying her up the stairs. She wasn’t asleep. She was scared; she couldn’t talk to him. So she pretended to be asleep, the only thing she could think of. She remembered how gently Matt held her, how gently he laid her in the bed, how he wrapped the blankets around her. She remembered how softly and lovingly he said her name. She moved her hand to her forehead where he kissed her so softly, so full of love and care. Tears formed in the corner of her eyes, she didn’t bother to wipe them away, she just let them fall down her cheek. She loved Matt, and that was the reason she couldn’t stay. That’s the reason she left. Because she loved him and because she was scared .
