Epilogue

Matt tightened his grip around the sleeping Emily’s waist. He felt her snuggle up against his chest and sigh happily. Matt smiled as he tightened his jacket around her, the one she was using as a blanket. He looked out at the ocean, then up at the sky. The sun was just starting to come up and the stars were disappearing one by one.

Matt heard Emily sigh again and looked at her face. A small smile was on her lips, and the look on her face was pure contentment. He pushed a strand of her hair out of her face and listened to her soft breathing.

Sittin' on the beach

The island king of love

Deep in Fijian Seas

Deep in some blissful dream

Where the goddess finally sleeps

In the lap of her lover

Subdued in all her rage

And I'm aglow with the taste of the demons driven out

And happily replaced with the presence of real love

The only one who saves

“Morning,” Matt whispered as he watched Emily’s eyes flutter open. She looked around at her surroundings, at first confused, then a smile spread on her face as she realized where she was, and who’s lap she was in.

“Hey,” she said softly back, snuggling her back against his chest and looking at the rising sun over the horizon.

“How’d you sleep?” Matt asked, nuzzling the back of her neck with his lips.

“Really well,” Emily replied, turning her head and catching his lips with her own.

I wanna dance with you

I see a world where people live and die with grace

The karmic ocean dried up and leave no trace

I wanna dance with you

I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds

And lead us back to a world we would not face

“Did you sleep?” Emily asked, shutting her eyes and laying her head on Matt’s shoulder.

“No,” Matt answered, stroking Emily’s cheek softly, “I couldn’t. I just stayed here with you in my arms. Watching your face…”

“And…” Emily asked, opening her eyes and now studying his face.

“I love you…” he said softly.

The stillness in your eyes

Convinces me that I

I don't know a thing

And I been around the world and I've tasted all the wines

A half a billion times came sickened to your shores

You show me what this life is for

Emily laid in Matt’s arms silently as the 2 watched the sunrise. She watched as the stars started to disappear one by one.

A smile appeared on Emily’s face as she watched the sun rise higher and higher. Matt felt her take his hands and squeeze them.

“It’s funny,” she said quietly, starting to climb to her feet.

“What is?” Matt asked as he climbed to his own feet and took her hands in his own.

“How everything works out like this…” Emily said with a smile.

“It is…” Matt replied thoughtfully, “Are you hungry, I can go make us some breakfast?”

“That’d be great,” Emily answered, as Matt started to walk towards the house. Emily turned and looked out at the water, and the fading night sky.

“Are you coming?” she heard Matt call as he walked closer to the house.

“In a minute,” she called back, turning back to face Matt, “go ahead.”

Emily watched Matt nod and walk up the deck stairs of her house as she turned back around. She smiled as she stared at the few last sparkling stars that would soon fade.

Sittin' on the beach

The island king of love

Deep in Fijian Seas

Deep in the heart of it all where the goddess finally sleeps

After eons of war and lifetimes

She smilin' and free, nothin' left

But a cracking voice and a song, oh lord

“You know I’ll always love you Shane,” Emily whispered, staring intently at the sky, “You were my first true love, and I’ll always love you. You were everything to me and I’ll always remember you.”

Emily felt a warm tear drop down her face as she smiled. A warm breeze brushed some hair off her face and touched her cheek gently. She touched the cheek softly where the wind had blown. Feeling Shane with her, telling her it was ok to move on with her life.

“You’ll always be with me,” Emily whispered, her hand still on her cheek and staring at the stars.

Emily watched until the last star had finally disappeared from the night sky. With a sigh she turned and made her way up the beach towards her house. She finally had found peace with Shane’s death, and had found love in Matt.

Emily smiled as she walked up the wood stairs. Matt was right, life had a way of working itself out, and fate was a mysterious thing. And like Matt said, everything seemed to happen for a reason, and she was finally understanding that. She turned around and with one last look at the now morning sky blew a kiss to the sky. Then walked into the house and shut the door quietly behind her.
