Chapter 4
Gwen sat down at the dining room table next to Jason. He took her hand and gave it a tiny squeeze as she smiled weakly at him.
“You ok?” he asked, rubbing her upper leg. She nodded and took a sip of her water.
“Fine,” she asked, placing a kiss on his cheek. Derek and Lillian were watching them, and Gwen smiled at them. “How’s school you guys?” she asked.
Derek shrugged as he stuffed his face with some bread his mother had just placed on the table.
“Lil’ Lily?” Gwen asked, calling her sister by her favorite nickname.
“I showed my friends pictures of you and Jay, and me and Jay and they almost died!” Lillian squealed, “You should’ve seen their faces!” Gwen and Jason laughed. They had gotten used to fans, especially teen girls, being jealous of their relationship. Gwen was about to say something as her father walked into the room.
“You feeling better Gweny?” he asked as he took his spot at the head of the table.
“What happened?” Jason asked concerned. Gwen sighed, Jay always thought little things were bigger than they were; that’s why she hadn’t wanted to tell him about what happened outside.
“Nothing,” she said as she looked at her boyfriend’s worried eyes, “It was nothing, I just got a little dizzy, that’s all. I’m fine.”
“Dizzy?” her father said, “I thought you looked like you were going to pass out.” Gwen silently cursed her father, she didn’t need him making Jason more concerned about her when she was fine.
“Gwen, are you sure you’re ok?” Jason asked, “I mean you were complaining about feeling sick the other day, maybe you’re getting sick.”
“I’m fine,” she insisted, “I’m 100% healthy!”
“But…” Jason started to say.
“I’m fine!” Gwen demanded, then smiled at her boyfriend, feeling bad for yelling at him. She just didn’t want to confess to him and her whole family that that hadn’t been the first time she had had a dizzy spell in the past few weeks. She knew she probably should go and get herself checked out but she didn’t believe it was serious, or didn’t want to believe it was serious.
“I’m sorry,” she mouthed to Jason, who smiled back and once again squeezed her hand.
“I actually have something to say,” Jason said a minute or so later. Gwen and her whole family looked at him interested. He took a deep breath, and silently encouraged himself. “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” Jason continued nervously, “and this just seems to be the perfect moment, with all the people both Gwen and I care about most. Gwen,” he said turning to her and getting out of his chair, Gwen followed his lead and also stood up, her eyes a mixture of confusion and nervousness, “I have loved you from the moment I first saw you. You have been there for me constantly; you’ve always been right behind me and supported me. You’re my best friend, my lover, my world… I love you more than anything,” Gwen felt tears sting her eyes as she listened to Jason’s words. “You’re the most amazing person I’ve ever met and I want to be with you forever,” Gwen’s eyes got wide as she noticed something in Jason’s hands, a box. Her hands clapped over her mouth as Jason kneeled on the ground in front of her. She heard her mom and sister gasp. “Gwen,” he said, looking up into her wide eyes, “Will you marry me?” She sat stunned looking down at the diamond ring. She looked at Jason’s eyes and around at her eager family.
“I…I…” she stuttered, trying to get the words out, “Yes, Jay, I love you!” she cried as he stood up and she threw her arms around him. He pulled her close and gave her a small kiss on the lips and smiled. Then placed the ring on her finger. She smiled again and kissed him. She turned to her family who were all standing and clapping. No one said anything, not knowing what to say.
Then Derek’s voice broke the silence, “It’s about freakin’ time!” Gwen looked up at Jason and laughed. Never feeling happier in her life than at that very moment.
