Chapter 28
Matt was sitting in a taxi on his way back to the hotel that Friday afternoon. He was leaning his head against the window and staring at the world outside. He had just left the airport, Jessica was gone, she caught her plane and was flying away from him. He missed her more then he could ever have imagined himself missing anybody. He was sad, and he felt confused, he hated to watch her walk away from him. He sat there staring out the window remembering the night before with her. He sighed softly smiling at the lingering touch of her lips on his. He closed his eyes. He missed her.
Matt unlocked the hotel room door and hung up his coat, he walked slowly into the room to find Jeff eating chicken at the dining room table.
Jeff looked up at him in surprise and curiosity.
“Hey.” Matt said softly as he pulled out a chair across from him and poured himself some beer that had been left on the table.
Jeff wiped his lips and looked back at Matt. “Hey,” Jeff said staring at Matt.
Matt sighed as he took an empty dish and grabbed a spoon full of mashed potatoes.
“How was your night?” Matt asked glancing up at Jeff who was still staring at him. “You have any company.” Matt asked as he began to eat.
Jeff sighed, “Well I would have...” Jeff started to say but was interrupted by Matt.
“That girl didn’t come back with you?” Matt asked looking at Jeff shocked.
Jeff chuckled, “No, I dunno, I’m totally cool with having sex, but I dunno I just don’t want to get into a serious relationship right now.” Jeff said sighing.
Matt shook his head and then looked back to Jeff. “So if that girl wasn’t gonna come home with you, then how would you not be by yourself?” Matt asked staring at him.
Jeff chuckled, “Usually you’re home!” Jeff said watching Matt.
Matt grinned, “Oh I see.” Matt said smiling. He sighed.
“So where were you?” Jeff asked as he wiped his face again.
Matt ran his fingers through his hair and his eyes met with Jeff’s. “I was a,” Matt said softly pausing, “I was at Jessica’s.” Matt said glancing away from Jeff down to his mashed potatoes.
Matt didn’t really feel like talking about Jessica right now, he missed her too much.
“Ohh, what happened?” Jeff asked grinning as he stared wide eyed at Matt. Jeff could tell that Matt was upset about something, Jessica left and he knew Matt was sad about that.
Matt sensing that would be Jeff’s next question, shrugged, “Well I went there to tell her the truth, and it wouldn’t come out. But I spent the night with her, I just needed her. I wanted her way to much, Jeff dude there were so many things I wanted
to tell her, had to tell her, I just couldn’t say them! Jeff man,” Matt said pausing, “I’m so in love with her, last night was something completely out of one of my dreams, a fantasy more then anything, she’s everything to me, I just wish I could tell her the truth so that I could tell her so! But she left, it kills me... she’s flying away in a direction that I’m not allowed to fly, I’m trying, but I feel like everything I’m trying for is stopping itself.” Matt said groaning as he rubbed his head.
Jeff frowned, “You slept with her?” Jeff asked as he looked at Matt.
Matt heard the sound in Jeff’s voice, “Yeah.” Matt said softly as he looked at Jeff. He looked shocked, surprised, but more hurt. Matt sighed, “Jeff I’m sorry I told you, I shouldn’t have...” Matt started to say but was interrupted by Jeff who looked stronger now, not as unsettled as he had looked a moment before.
“Nothing’s stopping, you never give up anything you want! Especially love Matt you hear me? No Matt man, don’t apologize, I asked, she’s your girlfriend, I respect that, honestly I’m so happy for you, ever since you meet her I haven’t seen you as happy. The whole Lita thing aside, Matt..... you and Jessica belong together; don’t let me get in the way of that! Matt you’re my best friend, I just want you to be happy.”
Matt smiled at Jeff slowly, “Thanks Jeff.” Matt whispered as they feel silent. He started to eat more mashed potatoes.
