Chapter 29

The next three days couldn’t have gone by any slower. Matt was quiet and didn’t say very much. He talked to Jessica once or twice on the phone an to hear her voice it only depressed him even more knowing she wasn’t with him, and he couldn’t go to see her. She told Matt that she was leaving NY Sunday afternoon and might have to spend Monday at work when she got back. She told him she’d call him the second she was finished with work.

Matt had Monday night off of work and so did Jeff so they went gambling all day. Matt won about 23$, and Jeff about 17$. They returned to the hotel around 9,and Matt said he was gonna go for a walk. Jeff asked him whether they should spend their money on a pizza, and Matt agreed. He told Jeff he would be back in alittle while and left.

He got out to the beach behind the hotel, and took a deep breath. He needed desperately to clear his head, the WWF was leaving Thursday night after Smackdown, and he was still trying to figure out how to tell Jessica the truth.

Meanwhile... back in the hotel room, Jeff was watching Raw.

He was lying across the couch waiting for a commercial to end when the doorbell rang. He sighed standing. “Pizza!” Jeff said excitedly as he ran to the door. Jeff glanced in the mirror and took the pizza money off of the table near the door and grabbed the door knob opening it.

He was stunned to see the person who was standing there, his eyes went wide and his mouth dropped open. Jessica was standing there staring at him. She had a confused look on her face. She was beautiful. He just stared at her not knowing what to say. He shrugged as she stared back at him. Finally he forced himself to speak.

“Hi,” He said softly opening the door for her to come inside.

She stared at him as she walked past him into the room.

Once they were standing in the living room Jeff spoke, “Um, I dunno what to say...” Jeff said staring at her. He could tell by the way her eyes examined him that she knew who he was.

After several minutes of Jessica’s silence, she spoke shocked, “Jeff Hardy?!” She said as she shook her head confused.

Jeff took a deep breath, “Yeah, its me.” Jeff said softly.

He watched as Jessica leaned against the back of the couch and ran her fingers through her hair. Jeff understood again now staring at her why Matt was so crazy about her, Matt loved her for the same reasons he had.

“I,” Jessica said taking a deep breath and meeting Jeff’s eyes. “How...How?” She stammered totally confused.

Jeff rubbed his forehead, he sighed. “That’s what I’m trying to figure out...” Jeff mumbled as he sat on the edge of his bed.

Jessica stared at him a moment and spoke, “I haven’t seen you in years....and suddenly I come to see Matt and here you are, how? I mean you know him? This is so screwed up...what’s going on?” Jessica asked watching him.

Jeff saw the completely confused look on her face. Jeff sighed, “Matt’s my friend, I’ve known him since college.... we’re here for our work....” Jeff said not wanting to be the one to tell her the truth.

Jessica’s eyes burned into Jeff face, “Your work? I thought he was here on vacation, where does he work, what does he do? What do you do? Jeff the last time I saw you, you wanted be some professional wrestler...” Jessica said pausing as her eyes went wide, her mouth opened, as if something had just clicked in her brain.

Jeff stared at her as a tear ran down her cheeck, “Jessica, Matt he… we wrestle together. We’re here to do some shows. The WWF, wrestling, that’s our job, we’re a team together.” Jeff whispered. The truth was out and she hadn’t heard it from Matt. Jeff felt like crying himself.

“So what, you two wrestle together, so your like famous! Jeff this is nuts....I don’t believe this!” Jessica said pausing. “So lemme get this straight!” She said standing and taking a few steps away from him, “Matt lied to me this whole time, everything he’s ever said to me.... all of it was a lie!” Jessica said as more tears ran down her cheeks, “The other night, that was a lie, everything...” Jessica said crying into her hands. Jeff’s heart ached, he felt so sorry for telling her. He walked slowly toward her and reached his hand out and touched her arm only to have her jump back away from him and stare dead into his eyes. Tears streaming down her face, her face red, eyes icy as snow. Jeff swallowed hard and watched her. “Jessica, please, Matt tried to tell you the truth so many times, he couldn’t.... he thought he’d lose you, please, let him tell you! I shouldn’t have said anything, don’t freak out until you talk to him, please I don’t wanna be the one responsible for breaking his heart, he never wanted to lie to you, he loves you!” Jeff said clearing his throat.

Jessica started to cry as she spoke, “How can he love me? He hasn’t said one thing to me that was the truth,” she said sniffling, “As far as I’m concerned I never want to see him again!” Jessica said crying.

Jeff nor Jessica had even realized that Matt was now standing in the hallway and had heard and watched the whole thing.

“I better go...” Jessica said as she walked past Jeff and started for the hallway. She stopped dead, as she looked up and saw Matt standing there his eyes aching as he stared at her. He'd lost her. His heart literally felt as though it had broken in a thousand pieces. She looked at him as tears fell down her cheeks.

Matt couldn’t speak, he could move, he just continued to watch her. She cleared her throat, swallowed and walked past him and was gone.
