Chapter 15
“Mr. McMahon,” I said as confidently as I could. “So glad you could join us.”
He looked from me to Jeff, and back to me. “I see you’ve sorted out your problems,” he observed. “And you’re looking in much better shape than before.” He turned to Jeff. “Young Mr. Hardy, what have you to say for yourself?”
I looked at Jeff. He wasn’t sure what was Mr. McMahon’s point. “Uh, that I’ve finally found the woman that I love?” he replied a bit nervously.
“Right you are!” Vince boomed. “It’s about time you’re going out with someone, young man, you’ve been working too hard staying single. I’m glad your woman here has the strength to penetrate your defenses,” he said a bit slyly. We couldn’t help smiling. The others laughed heartily.
I called Elizabeth and told her all about it. She was ecstatic.
“I just wanna say thank you,” I told her sincerely. I was at a phone booth just outside the Boston arena, which was already filling up with people lined up for the show later that night.
“Thank me for what?” she asked.
“For everything. If it hadn’t been for your suggestion, I wouldn’t have met and fallen in love with Jeff,” I replied. She chuckled.
“See? I told you guys were meant to be together,” she insisted.
“OK, I guess you’re right,” I admitted sheepishly. “And you know what? You’re right; Jeff is cute. I guess that fact doesn’t hurt, plus he’s all that.” We burst out laughing.
“Oh, I’m so happy for you. Congratulations.”
“Thanks.” I remembered what I called her for. “Oh, Liz? Could you fly over here tomorrow?”
“Why?”
“Because I’m reserving you a very special seat tomorrow night on RAW,” I replied excitedly. “Come on, you wanna come or not?”
“Girlfriend, I wouldn’t miss this for the world!” Liz hooted on the other end. “Where are you?”
“Boston. I’ll pick you up there tomorrow afternoon, OK?”
“OK. Bye.”
“Bye.” We hung up. Elizabeth didn’t know that I had a little backstage surprise for her after the show.
I saw her the next afternoon. We caught up on the latest happenings in our lives, then I took her straight to her seat in the arena. The people were flocking in by the hundreds. Soon, the arena was filled up and it was time for me to go backstage.
“Liz, enjoy the show, OK? And one more thing, put out your hand every time a wrestler comes out, OK?”
“OK.”
“I’ll pick you up after the show. I have another surprise for you.” I left her wondering what it was.
The show started, and I knew Liz had fun when I took her later backstage to meet my friends, the WWF superstars. She was telling me about how a few wrestlers personally gave her a quick handshake as they walked down the ramp. Edge & Christian and the Hardy Boyz did just that.
I introduced her to a few of them. She looked so happy as she chatted with them about life on the road and anything she wanted to ask. Jeff and I just stood from a distance, his arm draped around my bare shoulders.
“She’s a great girl,” he remarked. I wrapped an arm around his waist.
“Yeah. I actually thank her for everything that led me to you,” I said with a smile. “And she should only deserve so much better. I’m glad she’s getting along so well with the others,” I added as Liz smiled at me from the crowd. I smiled back with a casual wave.
“I guess I should be thankful to her, too. I don’t know where I’d be without meeting you—probably still the same place,” he said softly. I gazed up at him and smiled affectionately. “I’m so lucky I met you,” he added sincerely, the green depths of his eyes reflecting it.
I leaned over until we were nose to nose. “Me too,” I said as our lips met in a soft kiss.
