Chapter 6
job. The WWF was in Minneapolis for the next four days and I get to tour with them since I hold a very prominent position. I do several things at one time at a job like this; but then again, I was used to it. The arena was still empty as preparations were being made for the show later that night. I was holding a clipboard with a pencil in my hand.
“Alex, could you bring these equipment here over there so the lighting will have a more dramatic effect?” I ordered. Well, it doesn’t like an order, more like an order coming from a young show-runner. “Neil! Pull that up, will you? Gina, make sure the cameras are working fulltime.” I was busy, but I’m enjoying it. I hadn’t seen Jeff in a week, and I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to see him again since I hadn’t told him in our first encounter that I had been there to apply for a job. But I didn’t really expect to get it—but since I did, I had to come up with as honest an excuse for being with the tour all of a sudden. Unfortunately, I was so busy training that I hadn’t. Well, as long as he’s not here, I’ll be fine, I thought.
But it turned out I had to meet with him and his brother for a match later that night. So much for being fine, I thought ruefully as I flashed my security pass to the guard standing in front of the locker room area. He let me pass and I made my way to the Hardyz’ locker room. I knocked on the door and Matt opened it.
“Matt?” He nodded. I informed him that I was the new girl on the job.
“Nice to meet you,” he said pleasantly. “You’re here to talk about the match?”
“Just checking on you. You guys are next after the Intercontinental championship,” I replied, not daring to mention Jeff.
“Hey, Matt! Who’s there?” he asked from the back.
“The new girl,” he replied. “Would you like to come in?” he said, opening the door.
“Oh, no, it’s OK,” I said quickly, not wanting to see Jeff. “I have to go check up on other things. See ya,” I said over my shoulder as I walked away and hid from their sight.
I could hear Matt telling his brother about me.
“What’s she look like?” I heard Jeff ask.
“Oh, she’s a pretty thing,” Matt replied. I didn’t want to hear anything anymore so I went on with my job.
My first real night on the job turned out beautifully. I couldn’t have been more satisfied with it than Mr. McMahon was. Everyone in the crew congratulated me on my job well done.
I smiled. “Thanks, you guys did a great job as well,” I told all of them when the show was over and the arena empty. I walked backstage and most of the wrestlers have already packed up and gone back to their hotel rooms. I thought that Jeff wasn’t around anymore, so I walked past their open locker room. But it wasn’t empty. I saw Jeff sitting down on the bench, tying up his shoes. Our eyes met. I turned away and walked on, hoping that he didn’t recognize me.
“Hey, Ann! Wait up!” he said behind me. “Hi,” he said warmly when he caught up with me.
I looked down on the ground. “Uh, hello,” I said formally.
“I thought I recognized you,” he said, almost accusingly. “What are you doing here?”
I couldn’t look at him. “I’m…here because I’m working here,” I finished lamely. By then, we were at the car park.
“What?” he gasped. We stopped walking. “You’re working here?” I nodded in shame.
“Yeah, as the new girl on the job,” I replied quietly. He just stared at me questioningly. “I’m sorry…I didn’t tell you when we first met. I didn’t want to sound so…desperate and you were so nice to me…” my voice trailed off, running out of things to say. He lifted up my chin.
“You could have told me. I would never think of you like that,” he said softly. “Anyway, it’s great that you got the job. You’ll get to see more of your big brother,” he added jokingly. I broke into a smile.
“Then it’s all for the better,” I said.
