Chapter 22
We had been on the road for sometime, driving in silence. The radio was softly playing "My Maria" by Brooks -n- Dunn. I reached down and turned up the volume a bit. I thought that it was kind of ironic, it was playing my name. I glanced over at Matt to see if he was actually listening to the lyrics. A slow smile spread across his face.
"Great song don't you think?" He whispered over to me, as not to wake the others who were zonked out in the back seat.
"Yeah..." I whispered back.
I smiled to myself, as I had thought that Matt was a little upset with me. I looked back out onto the dark highway as we sped along, every once in awhile bright headlights blinding our eyes. I then went back to the moment where he kissed me. It all happened so fast, I didn't really have a chance to react to it. The realization had just hit me as we drove along. I mean I had went through the motions of kissing him, but it was now, that I felt the passion behind it. I closed my eyes in a daze and touched my lips, as if his were still there, resting against mine.
"Maria?" Matt;s voice whispered, almost hauntingly.
I jumped at the sound of it and my heart raced, as I had almost forgotten we were in the same moving vehicle together. My eyes flashed open and I turned panic stricken to Matt;s confused eyes.
"Are you okay?" He asked again.
I blinked, "yeah, fine..." I squeaked out, my blood pressure lowering a bit.
"Maria, can I talk to you about something?" He continued.
"Sure." I gathered myself and dropped back into reality.
"I'm kind of sorry for what happened tonight, it was sort of a it's okay, no big deal...it's just.... it's just... that.... I heat of the moment thing." He started off.
"Oh, I liked it..." I let my voice trail off, ending my sentence in a whisper, looking out my window. Tears began to form, just brimming. I held them back and swallowed hard... heat of the moment... I should have known it was to just in the good to be true.
"....Me...too...." Matt replied, but I didn't hear...
