Chapter 36
"Maria, you did very well, I'm proud of you." Adam gave me a reassuring squeeze of my shoulder.
"Yeah you handled yourself very well." Jay agreed stretching his hand out for a high-five.
"Thanks guys, that makes me feel good. I actually wasn't too nervous, I sort of felt at home in the ring." I said, walking in between the tall men.
"See, you were destined to be a wrestler, I knew it!" Jeff replied, coming up behind us, hearing the last part of our conversation. He placed his hands on my shoulders and gave them a quick pat.
"Hehe, yes Jeff you were right about that one." I looked over my shoulder and smiled at him. As I turned to smile at Jeff I saw Amy and Matt off in a corner, quietly arguing with each other. I decided to leave Matt alone that night, to let him go through his thoughts.
"Amy, what do you want me to say about this, it wasn't my idea in the first place." Matt was saying to Amy as we were passing through the halls.
"Well, it certainly wasn't my idea either! We just need to do it and get it over with, its only for this episode." Amy replied, cornering Matt against the wall.
"No it won't. The crowd will love this, everyone wants to see us get together, and once they see one kiss, they're going to want to see more." Matt said, his brown eyes flashing wildly.
"Amy, can we please talk about this later? I'm tired and sore, and my brain is fried from all this talk about this stupid kiss!" Matt stormed off for the dressing room.
"You can't hide from it forever, Matthew Hardy, you have a week to come and face it!" She called after him in an angry tone.
He stopped midway down the hall and whirled around, furious with rage. He stomped back to her, "well, what do you want me to do, kiss you right now, so we'll have some practice in before then!?" He asked, his brown eyes showing a sign of weariness and frustration.
"No, I'm not saying that, I just..." she sighed, "this whole thing is ripping the four of us apart and I don't know how to handle it." Amy said, lowering her tone, leaning her forehead against her fingertips.
"Me either, and I'm sorry for yelling at you, I didn't mean it, it just bothers me, its nothing against you." He replied, his weary eyes looked down into her soft hazel ones.
"I know Matt, I know..." her voice trailed off as she began to get a warm feeling inside of herself.
She looked up into Matt's brown eyes. They moved closer towards one another, and suddenly their mouths became intertwined. The kiss had lasted a few moments before the two realized what they were doing. I had gotten all cleaned up and was walking through the corridor looking for Matt and Amy, when I came upon them. They were still standing in the same place I had seen them only fifteen minutes before. Only this time they were in a different position. My heart dropped when I saw them kissing. I was stunned and my eyes became wide. I felt like I was being stabbed in the heart. I gasped for air and quickly turned back around the corner and collapsed against a wall, my eyes brimming with tears.Just then the realization hit Amy and Matt and they pulled apart.
"What was that?" Amy said first with wide eyes.
"I don't know..." Matt quietly said as he leaned against the wall, rubbing his hands over his face. "Oh my God, I hope no one saw us." He said through his hands.
"I know, I hope not either. Matt, what did you feel out of that?" She asked.
"Like we shouldn't have done that. I didn't feel anything from it." He replied, his eyes closed.
"Me too. But you know what, I think we needed that." Amy said, also leaning against the wall.
"Why do you say that?" He asked, looking over at her.
"Because, that was a test, and we both realized that we are still friends and we can handle doing that kiss next Monday on RAW." Amy replied with a tired smile.
"Very true. Now what do we tell Maria and Jeff?" He asked.
"Nothing, what they don't know won't hurt them." Amy stated.
"Are you sure? I don't think that is very wise. There should be no secrets between us." Matt said concerned.
"It will only crush them if they find out. Then we will cause even bigger problems, and none of us need that right now."
"True."
Meanwhile I was still crumpled on the ground around the corner, listening to their every word. How could they have done that to Jeff and I? Suddenly I had wished I had never come to the WWF.
