Chapter 1
Tessa Miller held onto the sink in front of her for support. She studied herself in the mirror in front of her and shut her eyes. She begged the Lord for strength, because what she was going to do in the next few minutes would be the hardest thing ever had to do. She heard the door open and shut downstairs, she tightened her grip on the sink, her knuckles turned white and she squeezed her eyes together and took a few deep breaths. She knew what she was about to do would be better for the both of them, she just hoped he would understand,
“Tess? Honey?” the man’s voice called. She listened to his feet jog quickly up the stairs and walk down the hallway.
“I’m in here,” she called weakly from her spot in the bathroom. She opened her eyes and looked at herself. She set her jaw, determined to do what she knew needed to be done.
“Hey,” Jason Reso said entering the bathroom with a smile, he wrapped his arms around her stomach and nestled his lips against her neck, “I’ve missed you so much.”
Jason pulled back as he felt Tessa’s body tense up. He looked at his and his girlfriend’s reflection in the mirror, and knew immediately something wasn’t right.
“What’s wrong?” He asked concerned, placing his hands on her arms and rubbed them softly, “Are you ok?”
Tessa pulled out of Jason’s touch and looked down at the counter, not saying a word.
“Sweetie?” Jason whispered, walking up behind her and running a hand through her dark brown hair. She jerked her head out of Jason’s reach and looked up into the mirror.
Her eyes met his in the mirror. He studied them quickly, they looked so cold and distance, almost like someone else’s. He watched her bite her lower lip nervously.
“We need to talk,” she finally managed to say, so softly Jason had to strain to hear her.
“Ok,” Jason nodded nervously, not liking the way that sounded. He followed her out of the bathroom and into the bedroom the two had shared for the past 5 months.
“Jason, you know how much I care about you,” Tessa said, leading him to the edge of the bed.
“I know,” Jason nodded, “I care about you too Tess. You know that, I love you.”
Tessa looked at him with a small smile, tears forming in the corner of her eyes. She ran a nervous hand through her long brown hair and bit her lip.
“Do you ever think that maybe it’s not enough?” she asked quietly, studying Jason’s face.
“What’s not enough?” Jason asked, his heart jumping into his throat as he started to understand what was going on.
“Maybe love isn’t enough,” Tessa replied, tearing her gaze from Jason and studying her hands that she had placed in her lap.
“Baby, please don’t say that,” Jason begged, grabbing her hands out of her lap and squeezing them, “I love you. That’s all any relationship needs.”
“You’re never around,” Tessa replied, “you’re always with the WWF. It’s not fair to do this. It’s not to me, and it’s not to you.”
Jason sighed, knowing she was right, but not wanting to admit it, “But I call you. We always talk.”
“Phone calls don’t make up for lost nights,” Tessa said, running her thumb over Jason’s finger softly, “Phone calls don’t make up for missed birthdays, or anniversaries.”
“I’m doing my best,” Jason said frustrated, “I really am. I’m trying. I love you Tess, I can’t lose you.”
“I know you are,” Tessa said softly, “but I can’t do this anymore Jay. I can’t put my life on hold waiting for you. Wrestling is always going to be your number 1 love, and I’m always going to be second best. You can’t deny that, can you?”
Jason didn’t have an answer as he looked at the ground miserably. She was right, he knew she was right. Wrestling was his life, but he still loved Tessa so much…
“That’s what I thought,” Tessa said, taking Jason’s silence as her answer. She stood up quickly and walked to the corner of the room. For the first time Jason realized how empty the room looked, and the bags in the corner of the room.
Tessa picked up the bags quickly and walked towards the bedroom door.
“Tess, please don’t,” Jason pleaded as he jumped up from his spot on the edge of the bed and grabbed her arm.
Tessa smiled sadly at Jason and kissed his lips softly, “Goodbye Jay.”
Tessa adjusted the bag slung on her shoulder and turned around. Jason watched her jog down the steps and walk out the front door, shutting it quietly behind her. He shut his eyes as he heard her car’s engine start and pull out of the driveway. He leaned his body on the frame of the door, unable to support his weight any longer. He placed his hands in the jacket of his leather jacket that he still hadn’t taken off and pulled out a blue velvet box, he had forgotten it was in there.
He opened the box gently and looked at the ring in it as tears stung his eyes. The huge diamond sparkled in the middle of all the tiny ones. He removed it from the box and studied it carefully.
“Will you marry me?” Jason murmured. That’s all he could think about while he was away. This would have been the night, the night he was going to ask her.
With an angry sob, Jason through the ring at the distant wall. It hit with a tiny cling, and fell to the floor. Jason stared at where the ring had landed angrily, then fell to the ground himself, unable to support himself under his weak knees. He held his head in his hands and cried, not knowing what else to do.
