Chapter 10

“Have you seen Amy?” Jay asked, running up to Matt, bouquet in hand.

“She ran by into the woman’s bathroom about 5 minutes ago,” Matt replied, “she looked really upset.”

“Do you know what was wrong?” Jason questioned, concern evident in his voice and eyes.

Matt shrugged, “No clue, she didn’t even stop when I called her. Maybe you should go talk to her.”

“I’m going now,” Jason said, already turning on his heels and walking quickly down the hallway.

He walked quickly down the empty, white hallway. Coming to the woman’s bathroom that Matt had told him Amy would be at, he brought his fist up to the door, but stopped as he heard the sound of sobs coming from inside. Putting his ear to the door, it was unmistakable that someone was crying inside.

“Amy?” Jay called softly, knocking on the door with his knuckles softly, “is that you?”

“Jay?” she asked, her voice wavering as she called his name.

“Can I come in?” he asked pushing the door open slowly, his heart breaking as he looked at Amy who was sitting on one of the sinks, her legs dangling and her face tear streaked.

“What happened? What’s wrong?” Jay asked, worriedly, rushing over to her and cupping her face in his hands.

“No, nothing,” Amy lied, pulling her face out of his grip and avoiding his eyes as she wiped tears off her cheeks.

“Something has to be wrong!” Jay insisted, letting his hands run up and down her upper leg, trying to calm her down.

Amy shook her head and looked down at her lap as more tears threatened to spill down her cheeks. She bit her lip, trying to hold them back. She never let herself get upset over a guy, never. But she had never felt this way about any guy before.

“You’re gonna be a dad?” Amy finally managed to choke out, looking up into Jay’s eyes with a sad smile, “congratulations.”

“You heard?” Jay asked, pushing his hair back.

“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop,” Amy apologized, “I was just there, and I heard her say it, and… that’s really exciting, you’re going to make a great father and the three of you will be very happy together.”

“No,” Jay said shaking his head.

“No?” Amy asked shocked.

“Well, yeah I’m going to be a great father I hope, but I’m not going to be with Tessa again.”

“You’re not?” Amy questioned, a small amount of hopefulness filling her voice.

“Yeah I care about Tess, but I don’t want to be with her,” Jay said, stepping in between Amy’s legs getting closer to her as she sat on the sink.

“But you care about her,” Amy replied, biting her lower lip.

“But, I’m in love with someone else,” Jay smiled, pushing a strand of her red hair behind her ear, “someone who is intelligent, beautiful, talented, athletic…”

“But Jay, Tessa….” Amy started, but was interrupted by Jay’s finger pressing softly against her lips.

“Tessa and I had our chance and it didn’t work out,” he said softly, “I thought she was the one and only person for me, but I was wrong. Remember how that morning in the restaurant you told me that you need to find someone who understands?”

Amy nodded slowly as Jay’s smile grew wider, and he grabbed Amy’s hands in his own, rubbing his thumb over her knuckles.

“You understand,” Jason whispered, “you understand everything about me. You started off as a friend, and now you’re someone that I could never see my life without. Amy, I love you.”

“I…I love you,” Amy said softly, her voice cracking between the three words.

Jay smiled as he saw more tears form in Amy’s hazel eyes. He gently wiped them away with his thumb as he brought his lips to meet Amy’s in a soft kiss.

“Jay?” Amy whispered as she wrapped her arms around him and leaned her chin on his shoulder.

“Mhmm,” he mumbled softly, her warm breath on his neck and her scent surrounding him.

“Who are those for?” she asked with a laugh, pointing at the bouquet of roses that he had dropped onto the floor when he entered.

“They were for you,” Jay said with a small smile, bending down and picking them up, “they’re a little bent now, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be, they’re beautiful,” she replied, taking them and inhaling them deeply, “Wanna get out of here?”

“Yeah, let’s go,” he grinned, taking her hand as she hopped off the sink.

Squeezing his hand, she looked over at Jay and smiled. He smiled lovingly back at her, before reaching over and once again capturing her lips with his own as the two walked out and the door shut closed behind the couple.
