Chapter 1

"Mike! git down here now we are leavin!" I called from the bottom of the windin' stair case.

"I'm comin!" she yelled with a muffled voice. Five minutes later she came boundin' down the stairs carryin' at least half of her room in five different bags. "Ready!" she said excitedly.

"Now, I want the two of you to be very careful drivin' all the way over to Texas and I want you to call us every night before you settle in to go to sleep." Momma was sayin' to us, as we headed out the door.

"If somethin' should happen jist call us and we'll be there to help you as soon as we can, don't forgit to git plenty of rest, and don't pick up any hitch hikers ˜long the way." she continued.

"Hon, they'll be fine, I trust my girls." Poppa was sayin to try and calm her down.

"I know they'll be fine, it's jist a long drive , three days all the way over to Texas, why couldn't they of jist taken a plane, I would of felt safer." she worried.

"Jesse suggested it, jist let them go, Hon, they will be fine, let them git out in the real world, experience new things for once." Poppa was tryin to convince her everythin would be fine.

"Okay, momma, poppa, we'll be leavin now, don't worry, we'll be fine, I love you." I said givin them each a giant hug and kiss before hoppin into my white cavalier convertible.

"I love you too honey." they replied.

"Bye, momma, bye poppa, I love you." Mike said to them as well, as she took a seat in the passenger's side of the car.

"Wait! Don't forgit Maverick!" Poppa said as I started the engine.

"Oh my gosh you're right!! I'll be right back let me git him and his stuff. I said boltin for the house. Inside, Mav sat patiently in front of the door wearin his leash and lookin up at me as if to say ˜you weren't really goin to leave me here were you." "There's my baby! Texas awaits us! Let's go!" I said cuddlin' him and then takin' him outside to my car where he hopped in the back seat and curled up. "Bye!!!!!!" we called, as we sped off towards the highway and my grandparents farm in Amarillo, Texas.

"So, we are free now!" My sister threw back her head and screamed, as we drove down the highway. "Yeeeehawww!!!!"

I answered her, laughin'. "Wow, we are goin' to have so much fun this summer, it's goin' to be unbelievable!" I said. "This is the first time were we are drivin' all by ourselves, across part of the United States, from Georgia all the way to Texas to spend a summer with grandmamma and Grand poppa. This summer will be filled with adventure and new surprises, I can feel it." I said to Mike as we drove along.

"Yes." she answered, lookin' a little sleepy.

"Why don't you close your eyes for a little while, you look sleepy." I said, glancin' over at her lazy eyes from the driver's seat.

"Okay." she mumbled, as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. I smiled to myself, as I watched her sleep. Michaela was her formal name, but everyone called her ˜Mike" she resembled me in a lot of ways. she was one year younger than I, seventeen. she had long flowing strawberry blonde hair with bangs and huge bright steal blue eyes that were surrounded by black exotic eye lashes. she also had dimples in both cheeks with a semi wide nose, and thin lips. she had finally grown out of her tom-boy gawky stage was finally startin to look like a young adult. she also had some air about her. she was forceful in her ways and would not stand for any jokes, she was a very serious person. she was also quite the academic, straight A's in every subject, and was on the way to becomin' the top of her class. Everythin to her had to be logical and in set order, and she had a strict routine for everythin' she did, but was also the most disorganized person on the planet! My sister was also an athlete and played field hockey and basketball. she was also a cheerleader and played the trumpet in the marchin band at the high school she attended. she was extremely smart, but had no common sense what-so-ever, that was why I was drivin' to Texas, and not her. I glanced over at her once more and she smiled in her sleep. I grinned at that, and focused back on my drivin'.

I then thought about how much different I was then my little sister. Jessica was my given name, but my nickname was ˜Jesse". I had long dark hair that was layered and that flowed past my shoulders. I had bright green eyes with dark lashes and arched eyebrows. I also wore glasses for readin' and writin. My nose was long and thin and I had fuller lips than her. My personality was romantic and dreamy, a far stretch from the real world. I was also a writer that invented characters and plots that I could escape to any time that I had wished. I liked myself that way. I was also on the quite side, not much wantin' to bother with others. I was content sittin' alone in my room writin' an excitin climax to a story rather than goin' party hoppin. I was also smart but in a different way. I was good in art, writin' and history, nothing else really mattered to me. I kept my grades in college decent but excelled in my English and my creative writin' courses. I was also obsessed with music, it helped me write better and some of my stories even came from songs that I loved. I was also a non athlete. I was the ultimate spectator when it came to sports. I then sighed to myself as I came back from day dreamin' and slightly smiled at the sunset that lay at the end of the highway, right in front of me, a huge orange and red blaze from the intense heat we had had earlier in the day. Georgia sunsets were always my favorite thing to watch at the end of the day. They were so beautiful, and I always said to myself, that is why life is worth livin, jist to see that majesty at the end of every day. My sister finally stirred from her curled position in the passenger's seat.

"Jesse, can we git somethin' to eat?" she asked groggily rubbin' her eyes.

"Sure, what are ya hungry for?" I asked, my stomach also startin to growl.

"Can we find a Denny's?" she asked, hungrily.

"Sure, I think there is one of those rest stops comin' up soon, we also have to find our motel, before it gits too late." I said, spottin' a sign that had ˜Denny's 5 miles ahead" on it.

"Okay." she smiled. The car was silent for awhile, except for my country CD playin in the background. (... Cowboy take me away, fly this girl as high as you can, into the wild blue, set me free, oh I pray, closer to heaven above and closer to you...) "So, what do you think we can expect at the farm this summer?" she asked, tryin' to make conversation out of the silence.

"Oh, I don't know, jist a nice quiet summer with our grandparents. We will probably have to help them with a lot of things, since they are new at this whole farmin' thing. I also can't wait to see their horses!" I said, with a smile.

"I heard that they rehired the two guys from last year to help out again this summer and take care of the barn." she remarked with a smile.

"What are you smilin' about, they are probably 12 year old neighborhood kids, lookin' for a summer job and a quick buck." I said, glancin' at her sly smile from the driver's seat.

"Twelve year old boys would not be big enough or responsible enough to work on a farm all summer." she pointed out.

"You don't think so? Okay, we'll jist wait and see." I said.

"hey, you never know, what if they are older and really cute?" she asked, tryin' to git me to smile.

"Ha! I will believe it when I see it." I told her, gittin' annoyed at the conversation.

"What are you afraid of? That you will maybe like one of them, and he will like you back?" she teased, again.

"Okay, enough! We are making outlandish assumptions here, we don't even know if they hired anyone to help out." I said.

"That's what I heard, what if..." her voice trailed off, as I glared at her.

"Good, here is Denny's, I am starvin." I said, spottin' the sign and breathin a sigh of relief to myself.

"Me too." she answered.
